I prefer this mix to the original, by far. This entire record is phenomenal. It's easily CV's most slept-upon record, and one of their best. It's a perfect example of how forward-thinking Kirk & Mallinder were. Instead of getting steamrolled by the oncoming wave of House Musik (and its endless parade of mutant offspring), they embraced it. Beginning with 1990's "Groovy, Laidback and Nasty" (not one of my favorite CV albums), they continued to explore House Musik, with a sound that evolved through subsequent releases. "Technology" is the apex of their experimentation with House Musik. The Cabs continue to explore the CUT-UPS technique propounded by Burroughs & Gysin, arranging a rhythmic collage of samples of their earlier work over a a bed of TR-909 + TR-808 drum programming. The cover-art image of a face wrapped in surgical bandage is quite fitting - these are clinical reworkings (excluding the Altern-8 remix of "I Want You," which is excellent) of the organized chaos of their mid-80's material. Vocals, synth stabs and arpeggios, percussive hits, etc., from the Cabs' 70's and 80's multitracks are sampled, cut and pasted, with surgical precision, over beds of contemporary Chicago House-influenced grooves. The result is exotic, angular, funky... Sheffield meets Chicago, by way of Paris, Dusseldorf, and Berlin.
Same here. Bought this on cassette in 1992 - right as I was getting immersed in the Techno and House Musik scene in the Midwest and East Coast of the US. Blown away by this mix, was well as the rest of this release. Seriously some of the best House Musik I've ever heard, and I've heard a hell of a lot over the years. Good enough that I return to this LP more than anything else CV put out.
