Hi, Charles, it was me who sent you the Bulgarian cabbage seeds. The variety is called Balkan. There is a little yellow label on the back of the packet where the variety is written in English. My grandfather used to sow that cabbage in June - July, then harvest in October to prepare sauerkraut for winter. This particular variety is also suitable for eating raw as it is very juicy.

Ah great to hear, thanks Ricki. Good plan to sow in June!

Hey Charles, another bulgarian here😊 Here is some helpful info about the Balkan cabbage. Cheers. Balkan cabbage is a high-yielding variety of white cabbage, suitable for late Polish production. Cabbage is round, large and fragile, with an average weight of 4-5 kg, with excellent taste qualities. Suitable for direct consumption and processing. The variety is resistant to blight. DISCHARGE INSTRUCTIONS: Vegetation period: 120-130 days Sowing: - Early: January 20 - February 10 - Average: April 25 - May 10 - Late: June 5-15 Sowing depth: 1-1.5 cm Distance: 60/30-40 cm

Yup. I was going to suggest Balkan, at least thats the word at the top. |L = Lambda, and the H is an N. But the big word at the bottom I couldnt read because its more cursive. CemeHa = semena, so I'm guessing "seeds" :)

Great video! Your editing skills are definitely improving. Beautiful with the music and all the cuts showing other crops. In my area (Southern Oregon, zone 8b), cabbage and other brassicas aren't very successful spring sown because of our hot summers. So I sow seeds on the Solstice and transplant in mid-July. Theoretically. 😂 This year, its been insanely hot, I wasnt paying attention and the cabbage moths went to town on all my brassica seedlings, killing most of them. I replanted in July, sorayed them with Bt, like I should have to begin with😂, and I put my kale out last week, and just transplanted my cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower this morning. Hopefully we will have a mild fall, because in my experience, i only have till sometime in November to rescue my harvest before hard frosts kill it all. Gardening is certainly an adventure and different every year. 👍🏽

Sweetgarden, Charles, as always! I like cabbages big time, but slugs took away so much plants up to July that I‘m left with adolescent Cabbages only now in august. But I“m patient and the warm weeks ahead will work for them and I‘m looking forward to get nice heads in october to make Sauerkraut in glass jars with and without carrots, that‘s really tasty. Sadly I missed the date to sow my ornamental cabbages fot the second year, since it‘s only possible for two weeks in june. They‘re so beautiful and steadfast throughout fall and into winter, sometimes they carry on into spring and are also edible if grown organically. I really like them and I“ll look for some to buy at least. Greetings from Germany!

Hey Charles! My Hungarian Aunty used to make Cabbage Rolls for me growing up but they included meat. I reckon that you could substitute mushroom and still get a damn fine dish. I was digging into a no dig bed to prepare a hole for my new Jalapeno Chili and could not get over how easy it was dealing with a former clay soil which for the last two years has had compost put over it at the rate you suggest. I also learned something new I hadn't considered to add to the compost pile...finger nails! Mine are so much like yours now, lots of soil underneath, that I expect it to make a real difference to my compost pile. How do you have Mermaid Tale Cabbage and still not have a surfboard...sigh! Interesting varities Charles! I grow some savoy but not an F1 and some heads are smaller and one just died prematurely in the summer heat so maybe I'll try a hybrid variety next year. I also grow a variety called Early Jersey Wakefield which is a pointy headed cabbage and comes in early as the name suggests. I live right next to New Jersey so maybe that's why it does well here. I actually have a half dozen heads or so growing currently for the autumn. Maybe I can make more saurkraut if they grow large enough!

Thanks David. No Clubroot here, and even where I did a trial of cabbages for eight consecutive years in the same beds, I never saw it. What is the gorgeous pink flower at the start please? Brassicas never quite make it on our allotment. We keep trying but not sure why they never come to anything!

How would you suggest to sow if you only want to eat one cabbage a week in the winter? Lots of succession sowing? Mine all seem to catch up with each other and come ready at a similar time and then I've got 5 cabbages ready one week and then nothing for a month 😢
@CharlesDowding1nodig
@CharlesDowding1nodig 11 дней назад
Is true! However, in winter, new growth is much slower, so one planting late July, such as at the end of this video, can give you many harvests over two to three months in winter, best to grow Savoy cabbage for that

Cabbage is such a versatile plant. It can be the main course as stir-fry, a side dish stewed down with onions and carrots, a bread substitute such as cabbage fritters, a salad as with coleslaw and so on. - poor man banquet BTW, if anyone knows a dessert made with cabbage please let me know 😁.

Dobrý den. Máte úrodu na záhonech, nepřikrytou ochrannou sítí proti hmyzu. U Vás nelétají motýli, kteří kladou vajíčka na listy a vylíhlé housenky ničí úrodu?

Dobře vyhlédnutý. Ano, mám bílé motýly a housenky, ale stříkám půdní bakterie, Bacillus thuringiensis. Napsali jsme to na videu, měli byste to vidět! Dejte si to do vyhledávání a zjistěte, kde se dají nějaké koupit

I think I was put off cabbage by the boiled green nastiness we were served at school as kids. Thankfully, I've come to realise there are far better ways to cook cabbage (cabbage bhajees anyone?) & my main problem is most varieties are too big for my needs. Grew cheap Greyhound this year & they've been producing heads around 300g, which is plenty, as that gives 2 cooked portions & the tender centre is shredded to mix into salad. Maybe I should try growing later varieties at closer spacings for smaller heads in winter.
