My Grandma ( Polish ) used all ground pork with sautéed onions, minute rice, salt and pepper. Lined the pan with broken leaves and she used tomato soup with stewed tomatoes. Covering the rolls with more leaves and baked them for 1/12 to 2 hrs.
I core my cabbage and stand it on a paper plate and put it in the microwave oven for about 20 minutes on high. SO much easier and no messing around with wet, dripping cabbage leaves! 👍
I discovered a while back that you can core your cabbage and then freeze it. After thawing, the leaves peel off easily. I use a mixture of spicy pork sausage, ground beef, Minute Rice (no cooking ahead), and onions and garlic for the filling. I also cook them in my Instant Pot. Put a rack in the bottom, layer in your cabbage rolls, pour diced tomatoes and sauerkraut over the rolls, and add tomato juice to bring up the level of liquid close to the top of your layers. Any leftover cabbage is also diced and tossed into the pot. Steam for 10 minutes and voila! Quick and easy cabbage rolls.
Catherine, try freezing your cabbage. When it thaws, the leaves become soft and plyable.....no need to boil. Works great!! (freeze the whole head, don't cut the leaves off)
Cabbage rolls are delicious! A family favorite! We never cooked the rice, we just added it in raw and it cooked itself in the meat mixture and tomato juice. I think we even added a bit of spaghetti sauce as well. Happy New Year, Catherine! And get some well deserved sleep as soon as you can! ❤

My mother in law taught me to make cabbage rolls like she was taught in Austria. No tomato sauce but instead a rich sour cream sauce. They are delicious. I'm so fortunate to be able to make these & your's as well Catherine. Both are my favorites ❤

I make mine just like you do. I just use alot more filling in them. I use tomatoe juice, a whole big bottle. I also use alot of garlic powder and salt on top then i add all the rest of the cabbage on top. You have to have that leftover cabbage its delicious!❤😊

I have not made these but asked my husband if he wanted me to make them. I was thinking to use the tomato soup( good flavor) but instead of water use a small 6 oz. Can of tomato sauce.

I grew up eating stuff Cabbage, Mom didn’t cook the rice first. We used the tomato soup and a sliced onion in the sauce. Mom always simmered it on top of the stove. I still make it the same today and it’s still a favorite and the rice is perfectly cooked. Such a wonderful meal. Great Video! Nothing is as good as homemade and well worth the time. 😋❤️❤️

@@linneakron2150 Mix 1 1/2 ground meat- 1 cup regular rice-1egg: sauce Mix 2 cans tomato soup and 1 can tomato sauce 1 2/3 cans water from soup cans. ( put one small onion in sauce)pour over cabbage add extra cabbage leaves over cabbage. Bring to boil and then turn to a simmer for 2-3 hours until fork tender. Sauce should almost cover cabbage. I hope this is right! Dad was diabetic so no sugar. Mom and I use about 3lbs head of cabbage. Good luck hope u love as much as I do! Make it your own and enjoy 😊😋not a spicy dish but delicious

A family favorite of ours for sure, but Greek style. Instead of the tomato based sauce we make an avgolemono sauce over them which is chicken broth thickened with egg and lemon juice, it’s creamy and lemony. We call them Pigs in a Blanket.

(Well, one of us, I won’t say who, watched some football.) By dinner time we were both pretty worn out, so it came down to leftover mac and cheese or pizza delivery. Happy New Year! 🎉 My mom made cabbage rolls a little differently. She didn't use rice, just ground beef and onion, and her sauce consisted of tomato sauce, brown sugar and apple cider vinegar. And served it with mashed potatoes, of course. I use the same ingredients, however I kind of do it the lazy way. I make mine in my Instant Pot and use frozen Angus meatballs, diced onion and cut my head of cabbage into bite sized pieces. Then I pour the sauce on top. It only takes about 20 minutes under pressure and no burning my fingers on the cabbage leaves! 😁
I’ve never made cabbage rolls . Just made unstuffed cabbage roll soup, the lazy way 😂. . Love seeing you take off the leaves. A friend of mine makes delicious cabbage rolls too. She puts stewed tomatoes on top. I’ve never seen eggs in it. Going to try it. Our neighbors ( 30 years now) had a New Year’s Eve party . We all brought an appetizer . I brought your sausage roll appetizers. They vanished immediately. New Year’s Day we went out for prime rib.

Make cabbage rolls often. I steam the cabbage by cutting around the core, & sticking a heavy duty fork in the core to use as a handle. Set the cabbage in the simmering water for a few minutes & off come the leaves. Meat mixture is almost the same, except I add a little minced garlic. Sauce is the same.I cut the left over cabbage & top the rolls with it. We love the sauce over the mashed potatoes. Making me hungry . Thanks Catherine. We always do cabbage some way, black eyed peas, ham and cornbread but this year I was too tired so my husband made something easy for the kids and I had a salad and he had pizza. Have all the stuff but now I’m thinking I’ll be making cabbage rolls instead! That looks so good!

I make cabbage rolls, and they are time-consuming, but I just love them. I add a little bit of kraut to the sauce it just gives you a little tang. Try it next time you will love it 😀

I make mine with sauerkraut and sauerheads if I can find them, but they are very expensive. I usually use just plain cabbage. Cabbage rolls are one of my most favorite dishes. I used raw rice. I serve with kluski fried in bacon grease. Mmmmm

I make them in a similar way, but I add sugar to the tomato topping so it sweetens it and cuts some acid. I also add a can of chopped tomatoes to the sauce
This looks wonderful! I will definitely give this one a try. For New Years day, we always cook Black Eyed Peas with the left over ham and hambone from Christmas. I put it in the slow cooker and just let it do it's thing for about 4 or 5 hours. We have cornbread with it, and usually peach cobbler or banana pudding for desert. DELICIOUS! My mother got her cabbage roll recipe from a friend about 50 plus years ago and it is very much like yyours except her recipe has a touch of cinnamon in the mixture. It sounds strange but since we have always made them that way the cinnamon makes it for us. It takes just a dash. A couple of years ago I made the rolls but they wouldn't get tender so I took them apart and cooked it in the tomato juice until the cabbage was good and tender. I ended up making like a stew out of it and it was delicious. The flavor was completely there but they just weren't in rolls. Thats how I do it now and very happy with the way it turns out.
