Dave I admire your patience you have to keep explaining yourself over and over. That is very important when doing these videos, because not all viewers are people who have been watching you from the start. I'm sure you get new viewers everyday. Keep up the videos buddy, thanks.
Nice description of a rugged kit. I heard the buzzer at 12:45 and thought that I was getting a phone call !! Just another example of how nicely your property is situated up against the natural forest land... so quiet in the winter. Thank you for another first rate video.
Yee haw! With my legs still healing you guys have been my hunting this year. Gotta say it's nice having someone else do the work and see all the sights just the same. Thanks guys. Luckily I'll be back in the woods soon with my common man's gear, wish me luck and keep on keeping on brothers.
I did a nice 15 click walk in the snow today was around 2 degrees Celsius and we also have the same here water water everywhere i did lift dry grasses bracken and found some birch bark also i always gather even when i know im heading home love yer vids Dave best wishes brother
Great, you unpacked everything you had just to show us what to take with ourselves and what not, just amazing, Thank you Dave, you're really Good Man Thank you.
Hi Dave, love your videos. I can't take the cold much with these old bones but I built a cab for my ATV and it helps me get out without getting to cold or wet. Its hard to find ATV cab videos, not many out there. I got a couple thousand views on my DIY cab in a short time. Planning a better cab for this year, something like the CJ Jeep convertible top. Without the glass windshield of course, clear soft vinyl works well even in the rain. The cab is a great way to keep everything including self warm and dry. Wouldn't be without one in colder weather or climate. Anyway, thanks for all your work and videos.
I have really been enjoying the Cabin Fever series. How about hosting a 3-day, 2-night ATV trip starting at your school, and touring the forest area from this video. Along the way, participants could put into practice skills you teach, set up camps as you suggested and have a great time. Many of us have ATVs already, and we could bring a kit similar to the one you demonstrated today. Maybe offer it as an extra class?
Hey Dave, just wants to say how much I love your channel an all the information you provide through it! Being a 16 year old guy in the Midwest I spend a lot of time in the woods but can't quite get my hands on all the top end gear/tools so your common man series has been perfect! Anyway thanks again and keep on keepin on
Thank you for the nice long film. I appreciate the time you took to make and post it. I was just talking to Dave Pearson a couple days ago about how I wish more You-tubers made longer videos. I know it's a hassle, so thank you for the time.
Dave, i love all your videos and i take in information like a sponge and use that whenever I pack a bag for the outdoors whether thats tree stand deer hunting, clearing a friends acreage of squirrels or just a walk in the woods. That said this is by far my favorite video series by you so far and I'm itching for a part 3. Nice ride and nice gear, beautiful property. Take care.
Great video Dave. I agree, the wipes are easy to carry and are handy. Maybe I would carry a small container of all purpose soap (ie. Camp Suds, etc) for washing pots and myself also.
Thanks Dave, but at 13:37 you recommend the Leatherman Core multi-tool. It's listed as a retired model on their website. Viewers- the Super Tool 300, which Dave likes because it includes an awl, is not retired and runs $80.
I think I'll have to get one of those frames. They have big man sizes. The set up I'm currently using (alice frame with a swiss rubberized pack) I had to make several mods to be comfortable for me. Those look good out of the box.
Thanks for actually putting alot of work on the videos. its 11 at night at the west coast, gatta be pretty late at east coast. Enjoying the series. If you three gangs have a time in this series(Dave,Sarge,Jimmy), mind if you do videos of you three on a hunt/scout for 1-3 days of showing 3 different style of kit or different periods of times, showing each periods methods of hunting, making fire, clothing, tools, etc. Have a great day
Thanks for another awesome video man! Noticed you carry gun oil. I have Rem oil in my pack. It is a petroleum distillate so it will light up just like lighter fluid if I need it. Another "C" for my pack.
great video! I agree with you about the water, however if you ever get beaver fever you would probably be too nervous to ever drink water in the bush without iodine or boiling it first!
The thing that has been hard for me as I've gotten older is dealing with daily medication. I'm now diabetic, and 31 years of working in the woods has beaten me up pretty bad. When I'm hunting or out for a hike I ALWAYS carry three to five days of any daily medication. A diabetic needs to remember, however, that if they don't have the carbo intake they do at home because they somehow got stuck in the woods they don't want to take the same amount of insulin as they would at home!
That was a good couple of vids...... well, usually they're always pretty good, especially when I get a chuckle out of some of your rants..... humor is the best survival medicine. One question for ya; I have carried for nearly 40 years, a small sharpening stone or two or three for blade maintenance, probably because of habit, but also because it works for me. Never used a rod, but always thought about them. Give me your "Grand Poobah" thoughts on why you carry them, and an advantage it may have
Greetings from Bosnia, Dave. By no mean I'm an expert but I suggest you to carry some plasters for first aid. I know that you can improvise plasters with duct tape and cotton, but they weigh nothing and they are sterile, fast deploying, and just for small scrapes and cuts nothing can beat carrying few plasters. Thank you for all of great videos.
Nice kit, kinda a perfect pack for the adventurer, kinda neat I found a whole box of Zip bricks just the other day for a buck at a discount store....have not used them yet but sounds like a buck well spent.....
Hey Dave, have looked at the new Rebar model as well? I like it because it basically has the same tool options as the two you've mentioned, but comes in a lot smaller package. Btw, I love the new series you guys are doing, keep up the good work and bless you all for sharing!
Another great video Dave. I'm not one to comment, I'd rather watch and move on, but I suggest looking into a hand full of aspirin, ibuprofen, 2-4 antihistamine, and even a few pepto tablets if space in a small canister can support it. Aspirin has it's uses, but ibuprofen will stop those killer headaches. Not getting into medical talk, but it's a suggestion I'll let you research and consider. Thanks for the knowledge! -Louisiana Country Boy
Being wintertime I might bring an extra pair of socks if I was gonna be out for 3 days for convenience. I'd also miss my hatchet as well...I'd almost rather have my wetterlings hatchet and bacho saw along with a multitool or SAK than the mora. MOOIG. I use a food saver to seal my lighters before packing them in my kit to make sure they stay full till first use. Plastic bag makes decent flame extender too.
There's something called a "pocket bellows" that works for starting fires in the same way as that tube with the copper pipe on it. It's a lot like a car antenna that's open at both ends.
i actually researched it earlier today. theres about half as much vitamin c in pine needle tea as emergenC, so, you'd have to take about 2 cups instead of 1
Hi, i´am german bushcrafter and i like the baco saw , but try out the Silky 180. it´s a japanes folding saw with almoust the same masurments, but better uality, a backlock and only 3 bucks price diffetrents. it´s made for green wood but cuts it very easy like the Baco, and really shines with green wood and even stays sharp a bit longer. Bulletproof.
Thanks for the information! I didn't realize there was so much vitimin C in pIne needle tea! Two cups compared to one isn't so bad when the one is free and you have to pay for the other. This amazes me the pine needles had so much. Did the information you found say if any specific pine needles (white pine, lodgepole pine, ponderosa pine, red pine, etc) had more vitamin C than another kind? Given a choice it would be nice to know if one was better than another.
Just a guess, but considering some of Mr. Canterbury's earlier videos, I'd say it's because duct tape can do just about everything a zip tie can do and then some. Now I'm not saying zip ties are inferior, personally I use both, but when it comes down to one or the other then duct tape is just more versatile.
This is a great series of videos, Dave! MSR may not make the exact pot you carry any more, but they make some similar ones. Which is the closest to the size you carry? Is it the 475 ML, 775 ML, or 1.1 Liter? If you don't know the capacity, how many inches in diameter is it? Do you have much trouble with embers from your fire burning holes in your nylon tarp, or do you just figure you're going to have to replace it every so often?
Dave, could you explain the reasoning behind the uses of the #6, #8 shot? Why don't you use #4? Also, I know that you said that a lid wasn't necessary, but in one video you showed how you used a 5 gallon bucket with lid to wash your cloths with ash by a creek side. I thought that was a good idea, because I think that clean clothes are awesome! Lol. Yeah, I know, this video you are talking in terms of a 3 day trip, but still. The rectangular bucket probably has more room, but I would want a lid.
Thought I was the only one who never had a problem drinking untreated water all over the world. Worked and lived on every continent except South America. Drank water from decent looking streams, rivers, or lakes in those continents. So far, never made me sick. We be iron-guts.
Hey Dave, great videos i'm hooked. Can you tell me why you don't use cables/zip ties? I find them as useful as gorilla tape, also i can undo them with the tip of my knife, so they are useable over and over and fix anything / last forever.
Its the same here in Alaska i rarely carry water 365,000 miles of river 3 million lakes no problem finding water. I too have never been sick drinking creek water ever
Nice new kit mate, but with the leatherman, you used to recommend the wave, do you not recommend that anymore, i follow your gear so iim wondering about the wave
Kinda off topic but have you seen any trophy game on the property this year? Like big whitetail or my personal favorite Black Bear? looks like heaven brother. i have 35 acres here in MD and I love it. God Bless!
Excellent video. Do you know if some company makes a water stainless water bottle with a wider opening like a wide mouth jar? I like to store items in the bottle but I'm limited as to what I can put in by the size of the opening. Thanks.
I am using the Bull Pack frame. Never thought of using a trash can and the ILBE lid off the pack. I have two of them. The lid fits the trash can perfect just got to come up with a way to lash it. Are you familiar with the Granite Gear Blaze 60 AC lid? is it the same size as as the ILBE lid?
My guess is because it is faster, easier, gives a larger amount of C, and doesn't taste like turpentine. Pine needle tea is OK if there is nothing else, but not everyone likes it that much. I think Dave is using the emergenC stuff as a big dose of C to fight off a cold, not just something to keep a person from getting scurvy. I think a person would need to drink a 55 gallon drum of pine needle tea to get as much vitamin C as a dose of emergenC.
I have two questions Mr. Canterbury. First, do you not still reload your own shotgun shells in the field? Second, is the SilNi pathfinder tarp that you talk about, the one that you sell on your website. It looks a bit different, and I was just wondering. I am in the market for a tarp, and I would like a canvas one from the woodsman school, but it looks like Derek took them off of his website. Thanks a bunch Dave! Keep the fire burning!
I know you prefer a modified choke for your shotguns. How accurate are the slug loads that you carry in the modified choke barrels? Does the modified choke increase pressures?
im not sure about that. i know that all of the kinds of pine are high in vitamin c... there might be slight differences but i wouldn't imagine it'd be much
Dave, what is the piece of material between your sleep pack and the trash can? I'm doing something similar with a 5 gallon bucket and my frame pack and i wanted to know what's the best way to separate them.
Around here, NE Missouri, Farm country, we have Ag run off in water, we have livestock run off, and so on. We got the Mississippi river with swim, fish, advisory let alone drinking it. I would think filter like life straw and maybe boil or a drop of bleach. I have not drank it , in Minnesota I drank river and other water untreated .. put here I am leary.
I doubt anyone is worried about "dying of dehydration" here. Its just that anyone who goes on a hike for more than an hour or so is going to want some water to drink. Being dehydrated while hiking is pretty common, and it can make you dizzy give you headaches etc I cant think of anyone I know who hikes that doesn't bring water with them. There is nasty stuff in most water, like animal and human waste, gasoline etc. If you know the water is clean like Dave says it is, fine, but most places aren't
Hey Dave were you getting the brass handled lansky diamond rods all the websites online say there discontinued now cause they make the lansky tactical diamond rod and I bout one to check it out and there crap compared to the brass handled bulletproof one
Dave, Just curious, why didnt you just go ahead and take that "Tulip Poplar" right then and there, as aposed to leaving it there for a later date? Any certain reason?? Could you expound on that a little please. Thank you Dave. Stephen, Ohio
Hey Dave i'd love to see you, or one of the other instructors, make a home-made MRE. I can see you wouldn't carry that much food, but i'd love to see your common sense approach!
quick question man, i was looking to get a new axe, and i cant decide between a gransfurs bruks or a wetterlings. Which company do you tend to lean towards?
People use to give me crap for carrying unscented baby wipes untill they needed some in a pinch because they didn't bag up the toilet paper they carried now all 3 of them bring both haha 🤣. You can wash your face and hands with the baby wipe, they're a lot tougher than paper towels or toilet paper so if the right kind with soap you could wash dishes dry by the fire and reuse or dry and use for fire starting which I have done there's actually a lot of things you can do with them wet or dried.
