It's coming up on two years since this cabin was built and I have received thousands of questions regarding it.....in this video we'll cover some of those questions
Love your videos Dave. And Brookes too! You're an amazing couple. I especially appreciate how down to earth you both are. No BS, no arrogance, never claiming to have the "best" this or the "fanciest" that. I've been watching both of your videos for several years now, and you seem almost like family to me. Be safe my friend!
Yeah! What Bill said! I have a stress-job as a fundraiser for homeless shelters and food banks, and it is so nice just to mellow into your video's decompressing from talking all day long! Thank you and Brooke!
What I enjoy is their lack of commercialization. Once I was curious about the brand of hand ax and suggested he list the products and could make a few bucks. Liked him even more when he responded that it wasn't a direction he wanted to go, rare in today's RU-vid world.
One thing I love about this channel is the commentary. So many bushcraft channels are silent for ASMR reasons. I suppose they have their purpose, but personally I like the explanation on what Dave's doing, why he's doing it, and just his personality. Dave's family channels and TA Outdoors give me that.
“I used a hammer cuz I’m stupid.” Well said mate! JKJK watching you not drill and use electric tools was probably the most bad ass part of the process for me personally
The fact that you're a good presenter with your videos, is a huge reason why they're so popular. You're detailed in your narration, and you keep us hooked wanting to hear more. As a 65 year old woman, I find it somewhat strange that I watch these videos. But, my mind and heart yearn for them and I think it's because I love your lifestyle. Being out in nature, doing your own thing, all the while documenting the entire process, which in turn generates income. What a life you and your family have. Smart people who love nature and love independence. Kudos to you.
You could build a cabin like this. Yes, you would need help for a few things, like raising the wall panels, but you can see that Dave struggles doing that by himself, too.
Something that is so refreshing about your approach is that you don't get bogged down in overthinking and over-engineering. Perfection is very much the enemy of the good for projects like this and the internet know-it-alls can really dissuade people from taking these projects on. Thanks for all that you do dude!
I could not agree more that "perfection is the enemy of the good for projects" You can't expect to know every thing and will learn as you go, and that's what makes Dave special. The more you learn the more you know. The greatest achievement is to "just start!"
Exactly. I've watched plenty of shed / cabin build videos and they all go over my head in details and terms I don't have any knowledge of. Almost like a foreign language. This just feels like a normal dude nailing a cabin together with sheer will and calm determination.
“One day of doing something is better than one year of reading about it.” That has to be one of the best axioms I’ve heard in a very long time. Well said!
As a former bricklayer, now RN in Alaska, I love watching your videos. I miss working construction, laying stone, block and brick. After dealing with patients all day, being on call for other peoples emergencies, I love having a day or two off to cut and split firewood, fixing a delapidated shed, changing the oil in my daughters car. Just zone out, forget about everything else and enjoy being outside. Cheers brother!
When I watched this cabin build video about 2 years ago, I got so inspired, that I purchased a piece of an abandoned land in Spain. This year I am starting the first camp and I am intended to build a similar cabin while the stone house is restored. Thanks Dave for this awesome q&a video :)
Dave, I’m responsible for about 8 of those 24 million views. This is one of my go-to videos when I just want to relax and learn a thing or two. I’ve utilized some of this learning when making a shed for my kayak. So thanks for that!
The director's cut with commentary, I love it! It doesn't seem like two years already, where does the time go? Your videos are great. Happy trails, Dave. 😊 🏕️
Gosh Dave, youre close to a million subs. I think you were around 1800 when i found you. As always, your presentation is down to earth, easy to follow and full of good info. Cant believe its been 2 years since this build.
Still love all these videos, I'm not a builder, but I've used all the tools when I built boats. And I'm totally infatuated watching these great builds of yours. Thankyou, your channel was an awesome idea,I really enjoy it!!!!!!!
Great in-depth video on the cabin Dave. We’re enjoying your latest stuff, it’s like sitting around the country stores old pot belly wood stove chatting about past events. About screws and framing nail guns, I’m 74 and people just don’t know how to use a hammer anymore. Remember those hot dipped galvanized 16 and 20 penny nails? TC man and keep posting.
I was one of the 24M viewers. This video is amazing. I love the patience and common sense answers you provided. I was a carpenter for an old school guy. We had an air compressor on the job that broke down. The owner of the company showed up with two 50lbs boxes of spikes and said, "Here brought you guys a new air compressor."
Thank you, thank you Dave for this video. You answered a big question for folks like me. Yes we can build one also. Just as you have. Great job. What I like also your build leads to all kinds of future possibilities with this build to add on too and so on. Wonderful! Thank you again!~ Ross
Dave, I'm a Brooke fan that slowly meandered my way over to your channel. I love watching all your projects and appreciate not only how down to earth the both of you are, how much I've learned on each channel, but also your faith & how grateful you guys are. Always thanking God for your blessings. You guys feel like friends and it's because you're so relatable and real. One day when I grow up, I wanna be just like you guys - living my best life away from all the riff raff and BS. Much love and warm wishes from the batty PNW!
Dave, I suffered from abuse growing up, spent a lot of years in therapy with useless "therapists", and the video of the building of this cabin was very calming and relaxing because I knew that this is something that I could do, and have a safe space even though those who hurt me most passed recently. But trauma doesn't heal like most wounds. Great content.
Hey Joe, I share a similar childhood. Our healing journey is unique. Can I recommend 2 books that have been extremely beneficial for me? CPTSD by Pete Walker, and Healing the Adult Children of Narcissists by Shahida Arabi
I’m with you on how useless therapists are! Even the “Christian” ones. I actually had one of these start nodding off while I was talking. Shows how much they “care”!
Old carpenter insulating tip. Coat your arms face neck and any other place that is exposed to fibers with baby powder before you start stuffing insulation. The powder keeps the fibers from sticking into your skin. Once you're done, take a cold shower first to wash off fibers. A hot shower opens pours and let's fibers stick in them instead of rinsing down the drain. The baby powder trick has always worked wonders for me and I've stuffed thousands of bats over the years
Dave, I stumbled on your original video of this build some time ago, and absolutely loved it. Watched it several times. You have a great talent as a storyteller and a videographer! Thanks for revisiting this again!
Love all of the cabins your family has built. Each one has personality and character of it's own. I'm thinking there are so many people right here in America that would love to own any one of them, things have just gone crazy housing wise. Mick's cabin is greag as well, he learned a lot in the building that he will remember the next build. Love all of your family's videos, gets me away from the rat race for just awhile. Stay safe and GOD bless you and your family
This follow up video on your cabin build is brilliant. I have watched this video many times now, I liked it the first time, and I never tire of watching it again. I look forward to watching your future updates on it. One insulation product I would recommend is aluminium coated bubble foil. Go watch a channel called "Boss of the swamp" and see the great success he has had using it under his floors. Like you he had a background in construction in his younger days, which has stood him in good stead for the rest of his life, building and refurbing cabins. He along with all the Whipple clan's video content are my favourite channels to follow. Keep up the great work. David in the UK.
Well ive probably watched you cabin build series about 20 times or so. To me the cabin is perfect. Im a porch guy and thats the only thing i would of changed and made it bigger. Im in the process of saving up and living as cheap as possible and when i do buy land, i plan on building this cabin for myself and live in it full time. Thanks for the inspiration Dave!
I really enjoy watching your building videos. Your laid back way of explaining things really make me feel like it's an approachable endeavor. Appreciate you!
I laughed so hard at the dirt comment!! Oh Dave. You have the patience of Job with some of these people! Another great video and good vibes. Looking forward to others in this series!
Dave, you are about to hit 1 million subs. Well deserved. Always enjoy your videos and your ability to tell a compelling story in everything you do. Thanks for the good times over the years.
Found your channel as I looked for people building cabins. The first of your videos I watched was your storage shed build. Absolutely amazing! I truly enjoyed your way of explaining things and your ability to build up a story, and the simple way you tied everything together. It reminded me of nostalgia and the way I heard stories in movies and books as a young kid in the 70s. I really appreciate you as I know others do as well. Growing up in central California I was taught to fish, hike, hint, camp, explore, build, pour concrete, build fires, canoe, shoot, bushcraft by my father John. Keep up the good work
Nails are softer than screws so they flex/bend with shifting foundations rather than shear like hardened screws will. Driving nails at opposite angles will give surprisingly good holding power. The correct fastener is determined by code but experience will tell you what is the right application. Remote construction brings out the McGyver in all of us, whether it is a bridge or an outhouse. Stay safe, cuz you are the doctor as well when building solo.
The original video was my first introduction to you Dave. And each one is inspiring, instructional, and stirs in this city-living man, an ache for things simpler. One day. Until then, I thank you for sharing your journey with the wider world.
Every video you share is such a treat. So much care and thought goes into everything you do. I so enjoy watching your life with lovely Brooke. As a city girl---I can only imagine the wonderful scent of an open fire and the magical canopy of stars that you both enjoy at these amazing cabins!
I really enjoy watching Dave's videos ! These videos inspired me to build a 16 × 20 bush cabin in the woods on our property in Georgia. This was my first time building anything other than a tree hut when I was a child. Thanks Dave for the inspiration.
My wife and I love the videos! I will be building a few cabins in the near future as well, you both are great inspirations to many! Thanks for all you do!
I just enjoy watching you and Brooke build your cabins. I look forward to your video's. I like the way you talk and your story telling you sound so educated and comical at the same time. You handle the know- it- all's so well Dave keep your chin up and stay safe from them beautiful bears up there. Windsor, Ontario Canada
Love all your videos, I bought my own chunk of land in BC 10 years ago, far far away from all humans with a 300 sqf dry cabin on it, build in 1974. I’ve ditched society and we can’t be happier. As a mechanic by trade and using scrap metal to build all kinds of stuff for of grid living including a wood burning hot tub from and old dumpster, (it’s on my chanel) Your videos gave me a lot of tips with cabin improvements and ideas. Thank you.
Hey, Dave, I am with you on the using screws to fasten stuff, where did this start? Any time I have used screws outside, I later regretted it. Nails are stronger, and easy to replace. The environ idiots, don't even give them any notice, keep on building! You do an excellent job, and your videos are great! Thank you.
I've learned more from building cabin's from Dave and Brooke than any other channel. They both are great carpenter's and survivalists. I look forward to every video.👍😎☘️
On the danish oil - I’m a big fan of spar urethane, and mixing with mineral spirits to thin it out (it’s pretty thin compared to regular poly) goes on well and dries quick when thin!
Enjoy the video. And yes, this is my favorite build video. Your no-nonsense approach to building and property usage is refreshing, intelligent, and informative. God Bless you and your family, sir.
Thanks again for a great video dave! You were the one who influenced me the most when I came to building my own cabin...a 10 x 10 clorestory roof. Still working on the firepit but it will be done soon. Gotta get past those pesky Tennessee mosquitoes lol. Keep up the great work and don't worry about those haters! They are just jealous! You inspire greatness good sir!
Thanks Dave. We just got water delivery to our off grid property. Waiting on a well to be dug. You have inspired us from our move from the city and out into the country. Thanks so much for all that you and Brooke and Mick do to inspire others. All the way in the Caribbean.
Dave, I've enjoyed watch yours and Brooke's videos they are very informative. I learned my woodworking skills while growing up watching my dad or just doing it myself. To me it seen to come naturally, but I still took Mill and Cabinet in High School. Looking forward to more future videos from you and Brooke, you two take care and always be safe. Mike
My 24 year old and I watched this build and Ryan’s video a couple times each before he started his 12X20 cabin this summer. Going up to put a door and wood stove in this weekend. All dried in. Will finish the interior next year. Thanks for all the tips. They were very helpful. You were a great inspiration.
So interesting thing about filling in the air gap on chimney's. Living in Delta Junction many people heat with wood. When building our house my husband put in rock wool in the air gap as did his brother because thats the way their dad did it. 12 years ago, my brother-in-law had a fire in their roof. When everything was looked at the chimney through the roof hadn't failed. It turned out that the rock wool had conducted enough heat to the wood box that it caught the roof on fire. Thankfully they caught it quickly and the fire department got there fast as they didnt loose their entire house, just part of the roof and some water damage. After that my husband opened our chimney area up and took all the rock wool out and then put an 8 inch ducting up through the roof so it wasnt just a square wood box through the ceiling. Definitely helped with our peace of mind.
I always love when one of your videos pop up on my suggested videos after not seeing them in a few months. Then I can't stop watching them for days in a row. Thanks for great content!
I agree 100%z In a month and a half, I will be going on an adventure of my own. I have saved up over the last couple of years to make it happen. This channel is almost completely responsible. It’s like listening to a wise uncle when I watch his videos
@@BasedCapuchinbird thank you! I believe 100% that I will be better off in the long run. Not trying to completely disconnected from the world but I think you need to be able to unplug. Especially as an IT guy. Thanks again!
Thanks for sharing your perspective and the 50 million great tips. It’s not like you haven’t built a cabin before, so let all the others just do what they want and don’t worry about negative comments and questions. I always smile to myself and think there’s always someone who thinks his way is better. A cabin in the woods couldn’t be simpler or finer to experience nature without all the macadam, wiring, lights and modern amenities. You guys have everything you need and it all blends right in. Love what you, Brooke and your family have achieved.
Love you and Brooke! I really appreciate you addressing the environmentalists who know nothing about Michigan history and think you're doing something wrong. You friggin rock, Dave. I love everything you and Brooke do! Hope to see you both again in Oscoda next year! :-) And I hope you, Brooke, and Mick are having a fabulous summer in Alaska!
Thanks Dave I do like your videos , you fulfill a need that alot people have inside to build or create something on their own. Most will never do , but they live that dream through you and your wife and son . Once again Thank you .
What a beautifully done ru-vid.comUgkxYGamVaHfdHiPlAQaLa7zkwR02OKpGYDU ! The instructions and the photographs are brilliant. It is thorough and genuinely informative. Ryan got another winner! No one does it better!
Dave, from one Michigander to another, love your stuff! I will be using your original cabin build video as a guide for my wife's "she-shed" this fall. Keep up the great work!
I'm probably about half a million of those views! It was the inspiration for the cabin I started last summer in Alaska and am working on again this summer. I'm not working near as fast as you, but I'm pushing 60 and this site is remote so no vehicles and everything was either carried on a 10 foot inflatable boat with a 5 horse outboard and drug up the beach or carried over half a mile on a very rough trail. In the rain, uphill, both ways...
@Bushradical I also documented it on YT, but it's an unlisted Playlist I did mostly for fam and friends to see what I was up to. Production value not so great, and plenty of times where I drone on for 8 minutes about what I'm thinking while I point at shit... Probably not as interesting as my cat videos.
I stumbled on this cabin video and watched the entire video. I found it so relaxing, and I could just picture myself there in the mooring drinking coffee and in the evening just cooking over a fire. Keep it going.
Your video of this cabin being built is the best video on RU-vid. It's my go-to after a tiring day or a stressful week. My young sons even will settle in and watch it in entirety.
I'm not shocked at all that this video is as popular as it is. I alone have watched that video series a dozen times. It's not even because I'm a novice at basic construction, I just really like your voice and watching cabin building videos is calming.
Thanks for another entertaining video Dave. I think I'd enjoy a video of paint drying if you were narrating it. Always fun when a new one pops up in the feed!
I’m originally from Minnesota and watched your cabin build a few times. You’re such a likeable person and I want to build a shed or garage next summer. But I didn’t recall you were in a forest near Lake Superior in Minnesota! When you show the cabin shot in this vid with a little snow. Makes me miss that snow in the woods. Thanks for taking us to the woods with you.
Great job on the cabin. Hug… people complaining about what you build on your own property can pack sand. And screws. That is a good question and your reply is best. Nails have always been used and cost affective. I’ve been building for years and have never used anything other than nails.
Great channel Dave! Not sure if anyone has mentioned an alternative to your Danish Oil, or if you'll even read this, but I recommend Odie's Oil. A little more work in the sense you rub it on and then wipe off. All natural and the VOC smells citrusy. It's great, easy to apply (no dry time) and leaves a great smell. Love your channel and keep the vids coming!
I'm a 78 year old widow but I find this fascinating. Gone are the days my husband and I could have done something like this, but we didn't. So I love watching every step of what someone else did. I love it ! I'm in North Carolina.
Retirement is around the corner, and I'm doing something very similar on my property in the country to enjoy nature, and spend quality time with the family. From the build to the explanations, great video all around. Thank you.
So nice to be able to hear you speak without any annoying, loud, repetitive music in the background. I cannot understand how so many RU-vidrs feel the need to add that to an otherwise awesome video. Sometimes I’m unable to watch certain channels because of that. I would love to continue watching some of them, but I just can’t. I’ve asked other people, and found many who agree with me on this. Good job. Keep up the great work. Love the content! ☺️
Awesome cabin build. No need to explain to anyone who says you should or shouldn’t do one thing or another - it’s your place, and a damn fine one at that.
I've watched you and your wife so long that I know there is no one with as much building and outdoor knowledge anywhere as you two!!!! Linda from Missouri 👍🥰😊♥️
What a great video! Seeing a lot of your home grown knowledge was so valuable. I've only built a small home in Mexico as a charity project with my high school daughter (and about 10 other dad/daughters) and I sure wish I had this knowledge, back then! Looking forward to the next video Dave!
