Hamilton doesn't just use hip-hop as a medium, it is inspired by hip-hop. Lin-Manual uses cadences, styles, etc., to show the growth of the characters. He is a huge hip-hop head and the play is peppered with homages to Biggie, Nas, Busta, Mobb Deep, DMX, etc...
@@nicanproud Yeah, the end of this battle plus "My Shot" definitely have strong Eminem elements, even as a casual fan. Definitely feel like 8 Mile era played a role in how Alexander was written.
Lin-Manuel Miranda (also plays Hamilton) wrote this, and also previously In The Heights, another Broadway smash hit. He gives homages and lays down Easter eggs to a lot the hip hop greats. It's fantastically written.
Absolutely true. I listened to the entire album like 20 times before I went to see it live. What an amazing play but not only that, as a hip hop / R&B album in total it is incredible. Mr LBoyd, it is absolutely worth a watch and as a history and hiphop head you would love it.
The guy playing Hamilton "Lin Manuel Miranda" is the one who wrote everything (the play, the lyrics and music composition) and he grew up in NYC he said that Biggie is his biggest influence cause he grew up listening to him, along with many other first generation big names but Biggie is the biggest influence on him
I honestly think Hamilton has been the most personally impactful artistic work (movie, album, etc) that I ever experienced. Genius is too frequently used to describe things but it applies to Hamilton (IMHO).
So so so so so good. I know it’s a lot, but I really do recommend if you’re going to do more Hamilton reactions, to do them in order. Even if you don’t do every song. They tend to build on each other and call back in certain ways. But all the tracks are fire in their own way, and Miranda approached the music like a hip hop historian or something. It’s so good.
Laughed my ass that your reacting to this since I watched "The Ten Smack Commandments" because they have a song called "The Ten Dual Commandments'' which is fire. And PS I am a metalhead, and Hamilton is insanely good. Insanely.
LMM wrote all of it. All. Of. It. A lot of attention is given to the rap parts of the musical that it’s almost narrow minded and pigeon holes the show. There are raps (brilliantly written & delivered) but there is R&B, Pop, Jazz. Don’t base watching it from one snippet. You have to start from the beginning to understand what’s going on and the diversity. The choreography also demonstrates the many styles of dance. It’s art & LMM is genius.
ALL OF IT~!!!!!! Linn Manuel Miranda is EPIC.....mega hard core hip hop head....10 Dual Commandments is a direct link to 10 crack commandments by Natorious B.I.G. There are books and breakdown channels dedicated to dissecting every word, rhythm, theme of the show....it is a MASTERWORK. Howard Ho's breakdowns are the best.
I hate nearly all musicals but Hamilton was my go to driving soundtrack for a good 8 months. It is NOT all hip hop though, be warned. There are plenty of more musical-y type songs.
You didn’t finish this! Really! It continues for another minute or two. I do enjoy your reactions, which is why I’m a subscriber. And your wife is right (of course), you do have to watch it. Recommendations? All of it, from the funny songs by King George, to the fastest rap in the show, performed by the marvelous Daveed Diggs, to George Washington’s Farewell Address, to Burn…. I don’t know if I can keep this brief, but I’ll try. As he was leaving for vacation from his Tony-winning musical In the Heights, Lin picked up a copy of Ron Chernow’s book Alexander Hamilton, for some light reading. (It’s 700-800 pages of dense, heavily foot-noted, carefully researched material). He says that he hadn’t gotten very far before he realized this should be set to hip-hop. He was amazed to find that no one had done it yet. He thought he might develop it into a mix tape. And you’re right about his influences, too. And Lin is from the Washington Heights area of New York City. It probably took him 8 years before the whole musical was completed, and I don’t know if that includes the off-Broadway time at the Public Theater. Lin had a different theme of music for each major character, and yes, he wrote the whole thing, in collaboration with Alex Lacamoire and heavy input from director Tommy Kail. For instance, King George has songs reminiscent of the Beatles. True, not every fact is 100% accurate, and the timelines are scrunched up, but it basically sticks to the facts. And Ron Chernow served as Historical Advisor, and he and Lin had debates on what must be included and what could be altered a bit. Two things I recommend you do: watch the RU-vid video of Lin Manuel performing the ‘Alexander Hamilton’ song at the White House; and watch the King George numbers. And watch the whole thing! On the WH performance, a little background is merited. Shortly after President and Mrs Obama moved into the White House, they held a night of song, music and the spoken word, and invited several major stars and well-known artists. This was after Lin had won the Tony for ‘In the Heights’, and he’d been asked to perform a piece from that. Lin decided to do this new piece he had just completed instead, introducing it as a song about a man who embodied the very essence of hip-hop, Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton. (The audience of dignitaries giggles.) He says ‘you laugh’, etc.well, by the end of it President Obama gives him a standing ovation. It took him a year to write this piece, another year to write the next one, then Tommy Kail put him on a schedule so it could be finished while they were still alive! There are multiple interviews on RU-vid with both LMM, Ron Chernow and various collaborators that I found very interesting.
My friend. Hamilton is like experiencing brilliance for the first time. Watch it through it's entirety. The songs connect with each other masterfully. Royce Da 5'9" says on Layers that he saw the musical and it changed his life. Lin Manuel Miranda went to school with Immortal Technique who used to show Lin and his friends in the lockers.
Dude, please watch it!! It's great. I never thought I'd dig it, either, but the whole thing is worth it. "My Shot" and the the very first song "Alexander Hamilton" give you a good sense of what's in store. "Satisfied" also
Much more than your wildest imaginations. This performance is so intricate, you will be in shock. The threads, the themes, the call backs, the influences!!!
Agreed to the ones who are saying you should react to the whole show in order. It's worth it! I'm not a hip-hop fan myself so all the references go right over my head, but from what I understand, Lin is a big fan of old school hip-hop and pays TON of homages to artists who have inspired him over the years.
Every time I see Hamilton, it seriously chokes me up. I highly recommend it in the entirety. I frequently find myself quoting lines or singing portions of the songs as I am going about my day.
I was hesitant because I was afraid it wouldn’t live up to the hype. This is my first watch on your channel! Hamilton is worth the three hours. I was praying my daughters would sit through the musical and be able to appreciate it. Cut to many months later and they know all the songs and we have seen this play more times than I can count. If you don’t like it, there will at least be parts that you can appreciate 😄
On the topic of the history in Hamilton, one of the absolute best arguments I’ve heard for Hamilton’s plan to assume states debt has to do with how the war was fought. Every state benefited equally from the war but the war wasn’t fought equally in each state. New York saw a lot more action than Virginia therefore it’s debt was higher but, at the same time New York saw no more benefit than Virginia did. So since everyone benefits equally everyone should help pay. You also have to remember back them people were much more loyal to their state than the country, where now people are generally loyal to the country as a whole.
so hard to choose just one but my shot is hamilton's "i want" song so its pretty important. i also personally liked the finale, who lives who dies who tells your story
Fantastic play, and that's coming from someone who isn't a hip-hop fan and didn't expect to like it at all going in. I absolutely love it. Well worth your time!
I'd love to see a full reaction to Hamilton! I've seen a few different ways of going about it.. some people watch the whole thing through, film a reaction and then post it in parts, while others are going song by song. The show is practically all music, and it's fire! Can't wait to see what you end up doing! ps. there're also some videos that were preformed at the white house right before Obama left office... namely One Last Time.
You nailed it. Lin Manuel Miranda has explicitly said he listened to Biggie and Nas on repeat while he was writing. He also throws in some very clear DMX references.
It is SO worth watching, and I saw another comment recommend that if you'll just react to them then do it in order of the musical's songs - because they do build off of each other and it feels cohesive and just really cool when you hear it all XD whatever you choose to do, even if you don't make that video, this video was fire
I agree with previous comments, this show is very well worth the wait...I HIGHLY recommend just watching the whole thing. You will not be disappointed. The writer is Lin-Manuel Miranda, his influences are all over the place. Several different styles depending on who is preforming.
It won the Pulitzer Prize, it is an acknowledged masterpiece and one of the most recognized works of art over the last 50 years. You saw a teaspoonful.
You do. You want to see it. Promise. It's genius. I have watched it a half dozen times and I notice something new every time. Truly a masterpiece. Every bit. The actors, the choreography, the music, the lyrics.
Very worth watching all of Hamilton. There are numerous references to hip hop and to musical theater. There are multiple videos on the rap and musical theater influences in the show. Quite a few rappers attended Hamilton have good things to say about it.
Yes, watch the play. I've seen it a few times on Disney Plus. If you're a music nerd like I am, you will enjoy it. Lin not only uses rap, he has ballads, Reggae Music, a 60s number done by King George, and even a classical number called Farmer's Refuted!
Lin Manuel Miranda is a prodigy! This is history in the making and I'm grateful for being part of it! YOU MUST SEE THE ENTIRE PLAY! It will change your life! Good vibes always, from NYC!
It was written by lin the man playing hamilton. He wrote everything by himself over few years. It was supposed be an album but a clip him performing obama went viral and was turned into a play. And he from Brooklyn and says his influence was biggie among few other artist. There are plenty youtube videos of him talking about it. You be surprised watch it.
Hey dude, love your content! You're one of the very few reactors who actually adds something to what you're reacting to! I appreciate you! Could I make one request? I just came over here from your Upchurch video, and I'd love to see a link to the original content in the description.
Please please watch it, it will change your life and I’m not kidding. The music and lyrics are waaaaay more amazing than you would expect, and a true tribute to hip hop. Most people won’t mind if you continue to react to the blocked video, as long as you can see it and hear it, we mainly want to see your reaction, your joy, when seeing it for the first time. Please start from the beginning, because there is a good story, background and history involved. Love your channel 😝
It's hip-hop. It's Broadway. It's pop. Lin Manuel Miranda even snuck in a lullaby. It's the history of the American Experiment, in extremely entertaining form. It is absolutely so mind blowing that old people (like me) who really REALLY don't like rap or hip-hop, and kids who don't like history, and metal heads who don't like show tunes, and all those who don't like theater...and we ALL LOVE HAMILTON ! I'm not even joking a little bit. Watch it tonight. Then come back and try to let us know which song was your favorite...bet you'll have more than one. If you watch the original cast on Disney, you will find yourself wanting to clap and give a standing ovation in your living room to the tv...that's how good this show is. Suggestions from the old lady nerd corner, "Alexander Hamilton "; "My Shot" "You'll Be Back"*; "Wait for It"*; "The Story of Tonight"; "The Ten Duel Commandments "; "The Battle of Yorktown"*; "Dear Theodosia "; "One Last Time"; "Cabinet Battle #2"; "The Room Where it Happens"* .... and I'm leaving out "Guns and Ships" "What Did I Miss" "The Schuyler Sisters"; "Satisfied "; "Helpless"; "Burn" and all the rest of the damned musical. * are my personal favorites of favorites that I go back to over and over again. Listen to your wife! Watch it!!!!
If you listen to the OBCA, Lin’s influences are apparent. Lin grew up in New York in the 80s/90s, and he alludes to his influences throughout the entire production.
I mean this sincerely, you do yourself a great disservice watching Hamilton in anything other than it's entirety the first time. Also I would (and have) subscribed to Patreons just for that so, uh..Something to consider 😉
When Jefferson says "imagine what's gonna happen when you try to tax our whiskey", this is a reference to the whiskey rebellion which was an actual violent protest to the "whiskey tax"
Hamilton is amazing! Lin Manuel has various posts online on who he was influenced by and it was very intentional which styles of hip hop/rap he used where.
Definitely watch the whole thing. I grew up on east coast hip hop and the music here definitely pays tribute to that. Biggie, Nas, Busta Rhymes, one song gives big Ja Rule and Ashanti vibes. It also tells a great mostly accurate story. The show is almost entirely music so if you just go through it song by song in order you’ll get the whole story. You’ve become one of my favorite reactors for your insights into what you’re watching and I’d love to see your take on all of Hamilton.
Lin Miranda wrote it all and he was influenced and adds Easter eggs throughout the play inspired by all the greats of hip hop. You were shocked a few times because you caught some. You would love this. Lol
Take the chance and watch it. Believe me I felt the same way. I wasn't sure whether I would like something so different. I finally broke down and just did it. Now I have a Hamilton sticker on my car and the soundtrack on my phone. I probably know 90% of the lyrics and listen to it while I work. Yep I'm a Hamilton geek 🤓.
You should watch the full thing, It would be worth it. I dont even like RAP, But Lin is a genius. And he has a golden cast here. Hamilton is a masterpiece
Not even going to check the comments, I already know I’m echoing everybody- you want to watch the show. And if you’re like a lot of us, you’ll enjoy the hip-hop Easter eggs throughout the show.
It is very much influenced by east coast rap. There are references to Biggie, Nas, Mobb Deep among others throughout the play. If you likr 90's hip hop you will definitely enjoy it. And yes there is singing too, GREAT singing.
Lin Manuel Miranda wrote the bars for Hamilton. I didn't realize all the hip hop influences that Hamilton references until I watched the evolution of hip hop and heard a lot of the things I had heard referenced in Hamilton. All the greats. I'd love for you to watch it and pick out the influences you hear.
WATCH. IT. YOU MUST. IT'S SO GOOD. Lin-Manuel wrote everything and you'll hear all his influences throughout. 10 Duel Commandments if it being East Coast interests you
Not sure if anyone has mention it here. Lin referenced many hip hop artist from the 90’s, that he grew up listening to. Both East cost and west coast and at times he DIRECTLY quoted their lyrics to pay tribute. They’re a RU-vid video about it, super interesting.
Lin Manuel Miranda wrote the lyrics and he studied hip hop and rap and uses old and new school to great effect. If nothing else, watch “Not giving away my shot” and that will give you a great sample of what you’re looking at.
Lin Manuel Miranda wrote all the lyrics. He’s a true hip hop head. You DEFINITELY should watch Yorktown from Hamilton. There even is a performance of that song from the Tony’s. It’s my favorite. I also had mixed feelings when Lin’s stuff was suggested to me. I thought it would be cheesy watered down hip hop... but it definitely isn’t. Love your channel, bro!
Biggie and Nas are absolutely the right pegs to understand where Lin Manuel Miranda is modeling the rap found in Hamilton. But it’s also worth noting that he went to high school with, and was, at least according to the story I’ve heard, dunked in a trash can a few times by a fellow by the name of Felipe Coronel, better known nowadays as Immortal Technique.
Lin Manuel Miranda wrote all of the songs. He used inspiration from hip hop of all kinds. Each character has their own kind of style. It is intentional. So many people just see that it is a musical and don't understand how actually brilliant it is. I would be more than happy to log in to see you to stream the first time you watch it. I watch a metalhead stream it from twitch to youtube without the video just using the external speaker from his computer along with his mic for streaming. Not only could his followers see his first reaction, because honestly it is like Christmas for those of us who love the musical, but he could ask questions and get answers quickly. He just gave the time stamps so we could watch it along side him. Get your wife to watch with you too! My top songs in particular for you to review are: -Helpless/Satisfied -Guns and Ships -One Last Time -Ten Duel Commandments -Wait For It -The Room Where it Happens
I love your reactions! You've gotta do a Hamilton reaction all the way through. Beginning to end. It's a masterpiece. The composition, the lyrics are so thoughtful and evocative. The choreography is exceptional. I think it came out in 2016 but I didn't see it until lockdown last year. I was bored but not after I found Hamilton. I probably watched it at least 20 times. It's addictive. There's a very deep message in it, no matter how you choose to look at it. Isn't prospective a wonderful thing?
Lin-Manuel Miranda made sure to put a whole lot of his hip hop influences in this show. Thomas Jefferson did a Grand Master Flash line at the end there, there's a line from Mobb Deep in one of the songs, another song was based on Biggie's ten crack commandments and is played throughout the entirety of the play. If you want to hear his hip hop influences more prominently, I would highly suggest the Hamilton Mixtape, which might be easier in terms of not getting blocked. But the play is amazing and I hope you get a chance to watch it.
It really is very very impressive. I'm not a new head hip hop fan, but the film is absolutely worth watching. I see it live (not with the original Broadway Cast of course) here in Detroit. It's a fantastic Musical. Definitely worth the view.
Watch Hamilton. Lin Manuel Miranda wrote this masterpiece over seven years. He used old school rap and newer hip hop to differenciate this styles and character of various people in the play. You owe it to yourself to witness the brilliance of his writing.
