I review, breakdown and explain Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities Episode 7 'The Viewing' on Netflix. I discuss the anthology series and react to moments such as Lionel inviting the four guests round to the Sandpiper House, the alien creature hatching from the rock, Charlotte and Randall escaping and the ending of the alien going into the sewers and emerging in the city.

This episode is intriguing and the acting is good, but I feel that the ending is too abrupt. I think it would've been better to develop this as a two hour movie. Now it's like you're watching half a movie.

I hated the episode. I kept on wondering how badly did the actors need money 💰 to appear in that episode. After that bad taste of an episode I don't want to even watch those actors in any other movie/show. lol 😆

It started very good.. but the ending was not so... i was expecting something more interesting/mysterious, than the usual horror monster thing we see in many movies.... the ending was cut short and also how did these 2 get away in the end (in the car), while all others were melted or electrocuted by the alien's presence... it doesnt make any sense... they didnt have any special protection. This episode had a great potential.. but the ending ruined it for me.

I wasn't impressed. It's my least favorite episode, even though I didn't like Pickman's Model or Dreams in the Witch House because they weren't Lovecraft stories. I'm fine with slow pacing if the dialogue and story are compelling and this time, it wasn't. The drug scene where people keep saying it was "trippy" wasn't "trippy" at all. There were better scenes in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas or Pulp Fiction. I;m also not a fan of the style used where they hang on a close up for an awkward amount of time. The way the episode ended fell flat. It was walking in slow motion near the city and there was no reason to keep showing the other two racing away in the car. It would have been better served just showing the tail lights disappear into the darkness and have the thing walk down an ally TOWARD the city instead of past it. I have one more episode to watch. I hope this one is better. So far, I've only actually LIKED the first 3. The 4th was okay. 5 & 6 were disappointing because they completely rewrote the stories and just used familiar names in them.

This was one of those episodes where you actually felt like you were in the room listening in on the conversation, almost like you were standing there like the bodyguard dude. The whole mood of this episode was spot on. It didn't go anywhere where I thought it was going to go, I was assuming they were all going to be ending up as prisoners or part of his collection. Peter Wellers character was really unsettling and he pulled it off really well. This has to be my favourite episode of the lot.

I see it as a kind of "sister episode" to "Lot 36": While in this one the main character is someone, who got used to being able to control everything, in "Lot 36" it's the opposite: A loser, who is so used to going through shit, that it gave him an attitude of: "So what? How much worse can it get?". And both pay the price after messing with powers beyond their wildest expectations. Together they're some kind of "Danse macabre": The great unknown swallows up the powerful and the powerless alike.

Hands down this was my favorite episode. A lot of late 70's and 80's sci-fi horror movies were just as vacuous meaning wise, but the aesthetic (and chosen actors) so filled that itch of.. "I wish there was another really well done early 80's sci-fi horror flick I haven't seen yet".... (of course this is technically better due to the advance in fx), but it combines SO much greatness from across so many movies of the era. It can't be ignored.

The horror of the moment when the assimilated Lionel looks down and sees "his" hands, then the reflection of the rest of him in the puddle and screams is truly haunting. To have been possessed by another being alone is terrible - which might explain Hector's tears when asked about the gun. But to be this ultra-wealthy, used to having everything you want no matter what it takes to get it, person ... to suddenly be a meat-vehicle slave to an alien blob creature - but still show enough signs of consciousness to utter "help me" from within, is absolutely horrifying.

We are constantly seeking truths that don’t exist, endeavoring to understand reality, ourselves, and our universe; all of which are fundamentally not understandable. Freaky and hypnotic, this episode was the most memorable for me. Peter Weller is great as the gravel-voiced, huge-line sniffing coke head billionaire and the synth music is perfect. The ending is similar to early 80’s gooey horror like Inseminoid, Galaxy of Terror, Forbidden World and it’s all the better for it.

My favourite episode. ...the lighting, the Synth music, was like being back in the early 80's. ...the mood actually lulled me and my son to sleep. Both had to rewatch it. It was like the attempts to settle the guest's actually worked on the viewer too!

In my opinion this whole episode was a basically a drug PSA. Every episode is a cautionary tale of some sort, and this one is about suggestibility and drug use. The hold the alien has on everyone reflects the hold drugs have on addicts. The alien merges with Lionel since he is the worst influence. Despite Charlotte's and Randall's escape, Lionel's terrible influence makes it into society at large to wreak greater havoc. The moral of most of these episodes reflects the typical Lovecraftian theme of not messing around with things you don't understand, and this particular episode applies that theme to the topic of drug use, so the takeaway is basically: don't do drugs cause they could hook you in and melt your face off like some alien. I figure this must be the meaning cause otherwise the first 2/3 of the episode is meaningless fluff.

I perceived this completely differently. I didn't get that they were at the top of their game. Targ's psychic/scientific Collab sounded like Peter Venkman's experiments; Guy's books once sold more than "corndogs at a carnival" but he behaved like a high schooler trying to hang with the popular kids. Charlotte and Randall's genius may have been legit, but both of them were less confident about their current projects. Maybe their hubris was what saved them. Lionel was a recognisable trope, that of a billionaires with more money than sense. He believed he'd brought the greatest minds to one place but he was only really interested in his own thoughts (I really REALLY want to know Hector's back story!). Who better to be morphed in to a demonic monstrosity and spend the rest of his days wandering through waste pipes! PS: I'm truly not a fan of people pressuring others in to temptation, especially when they're working really hard on trying to resist. I'm glad it was Randall's smoke that "broke your rock, dude" xxx

I watched the first two episodes of this show, and thought my dad would enjoy it because we both love horror/thriller. I wanted to introduce this series to him and he chose this episode at random. It disturbed me how long the whole conversation took. Almost the entire duration 🙄 bored me and my dad out when they were serving the drugs so we skipped. the whole immersive experience also disturbed me. I guess they managed to make it hyper-realistic. But the whole vibe was too sleepy and trippy.

I loved this episode. Autopsy and The Outside also make it into my top 3, and i noticed that even if some episodes weren't downright Lovecraft short story interpretations (Pickmans Model and Witch House being the weakest, most predictable eps, imo), nods to HP were still present (Lot 36 and Graveyard Rats). but this one gave a deep nod to Heavy Metal, and while I've been scouring comments to see if anyone else picked up on this, I don't see that anyone else noticed. The deadly orb emanating power, the manner in which folks were melting to death, the design of the monster, the time era, the aesthetic (not just of the Sandpiper House but the city at the end, as well), lighting/colors, ALL definitely Heavy Metal inspired, which is why I feel this episode and its take on horror was such a different and terrifying feel, standing apart from the others. I rank this number one out of the series, personally ♥ edit: i see a lot of comments also pinning this as Lovecraftian influence. I beg ya'll to watch Heavy Metal and then you'll spot the difference. Every cosmic horror isnt an automatic credit to HP but if his work is all you've read....

It was visually stunning. Film can be limited by its art but the people involved really excelled in this feature. Some may sayxits style over substance but I think that one of the themes of the episode was ostensibly a visual one. The use of color and lighting wasn't done just to look flashy and artistic for the sake of it. The use of warm tones in the room with the circular sofa and table is warm to an overbearing amount. It invites the viewer to be relaxed by its warm tones and soft lighting but leaves the viewer slightly uneasy. There's a death mask on display and golden guns which are just seemingly sent peices initially and seemingly used to dress the room but they're intentional nods and foreshadowing. Thr death mask represents the rich guys demise under the control of the monster. The monster wears or collects him like a mask. The gun is obviously a visual nod the Chekovs Gun, the literally rule of referencing the gun in that it must be used, otherwise don't mention it. The gun is used. Gilded in gold and loaded, it fails spectacularly and represents a false sense of security earlier in the episode because you may believe the AK47 may come in handy given the nature of the show overall. But its a false hope.
