Thanks for the informative video! Our last kitchen was thermofoil which was hideous. I just thought laminate was the same thing! 😳 So I was totally going for paint but now I don't know, wood prices are insane, I'm not sure stain is in our budget anymore.
@@Larch_Lane_Puppies Really stain and laminate are way more budget friendly than paint! Paint is a way longer process in the factory than stain or laminate. I suggest you look into a nice laminate, there are some really cool ones!
So would you say to stain if we want dark colors and paint if we want light cabinets? I want black cabinets with white counter tops and it’s just me what would you recommend?
Hi and thanks for watching. Either way works just remember that even if you paint the cabinets, if you have oak cabinets for example, you will see the wood grain bleeding through the paint. Obviously with stain you would see it anyway. Just something to be aware off. Thanks and I hope this helps!!
I have wide plank light (golden)hickory floors so it's beautiful but busy. I wanted stained cabinets but having trouble finding a stain that looks good.i was thinking an off white for uppers, but maybe a gun metal stain for base an island?
Hi Paula, there are some really nice darker stains with just a hint of gray that would work. Or full solid paint on the bases maybe black or a dark gray? Bellmont has the pepper paint gray that comes to mind or their Thundercloud stains look very nice. We have a kitchen on our social media with older oak warm hardwood floors combined with the Thundercloud stain by Bellmont. I’m looking into remodeling my old oak kitchen cabinets and this information was great. I was recommended to have them stained. I’m having a hard time deciding the color so far. Any recommendations or how the best way to go to pick a color?
I've stained oak cabinets in a medium chestnut color before and then had the wall cabinets painted white. I really like the look much better than just staining some sort of dark espresso. If you are brave you can also think of a dark gray or even black stain!! Black Oak is become super popular! I hope this helps, good luck on your project and thanks for watching!
Thank you for such an informative video! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I am thinking of going with a light wood stain for my island, base cabinets and pantry. My upper cabinets would be in a white or off-white. However I am not sure what crown moulding color to use for the top. Should It be all white moulding or should the pantry have a it’s matching crown moulding and then the upper cabinets have white moulding ? Your input would be appreciated! 🥺🤗
That's a really good question! Because of the top crown molding, a lot of designers tend to do any full height units the same color as the wall cabinets. That way all of your crown will be the same color and it will look much better. What do you think of that option?
Thanks.... I have maple cabinets that have slightly darkened over time but would like to stain, not paint, them. Can I go with a lighter colored (maybe gray) gel stain over them?
Hi Paul! Thanks for watching. Yes, I mean the lighter colors will take on the stain really well. May want to add some white wash to it and also use a test door. Maybe you have the same cabinets in a laundry room and could use the inside of another door to test the stain. Take care!
Hey thanks for watching! They are more to achieve a certain look. I wouldn't necessarily say it does any protecting of your finish but if you have a glazed paint finish, you can't see dirt / scratching as easy as on a solid painted finish. Take care!!
Hello, I just recently sanded and stained my kitchen, which was a job. I’m not loving the color, maybe not the color so much but the grain, in my drawers. They each have a wonky grain and I hate it. It’s a medium tone brown gray. Do you have any suggestions to fix? I’m open to anything lol, but I would hate to sand again. My doors haven’t been stained with this color thank god as those were hard to sand. Please, I need help! Thanks so much.
Hey Tanya, thanks so much for tuning in! If you don't like the stain the only other thing you could try is to do a solid paint. You will see the ridges of the grain but the shade differences would go away. Especially the old oak cabinets have a very strong grain pattern. Good luck though!!

Great question Cathy! White stain will do a whole lot better than white paint. It already shows the character grain of the wood which then helps hide any new let's say scratches that may happen later on. Bellmont just released a new set of stain colors including white, alabaster and some grays. We've been using them a lot for these purposes! Take care!!
