How much, if any, difference does it make to employ cable lifters to get your speaker cables off the floor?

If you have stiff cables, just go and touch them gently while your system is playing. Those vibrations could have a negative effect, so maybe it’s more about cable damping than lifting.

Why? We have RTA, mics and powerful computers that would be used NOW to prove the difference if there was one. There isn’t. Either you have naff cable that picks up interference or you don’t. If you do, move the cable away from the offending cause of the interference or get a cable with better rejection. Don’t get little bits of wood, the whole notion is absurd.

Halleluljah! Yes, I hear a difference too in my highly resolving system with an amplifier that is sensitive to speaker cable capacitance. The difference is small but noticeable for me. I am not sure that anyone who doesn't know my system would hear a difference. The differences in my system are: more energy in the high and extended treble, faster transients, better resolution of details when the music is complex or busy and better resolution of very low-level signals. But these effects are small. I have long-ish speaker cables (4.5 m, 14 ft each channel). am using home-made 6" 15 cm lifters made of 3/4" 19mm oak sheet. Feet are 11 cm (4 5/16") square and risers are 3 cm (1 1/4") x 15 cm (6"). A 35 mm ((1 3/8) long 3mm (1/8") woodscrew holds them together in case I want to increase the riser height at a later date. Felt under the feet protects my parquet floor from any possible protruding screw heads. I should mention that under the oak parquet floor it is concrete and contains a lot of water piping as underfloor heating which is very common here. So I hypothesize that the water piping under the floor was increasing the capacitance of the speaker cables over the 14 ft (4.5 m) run per channel. I am tempted to increase the height to a maximum of about 25 cm or 10" and may do this at a later date at minimal cost. One further observation: I have detected mechanical vibration in the speaker cables when playing music at realistic (=loud) levels. This seems to stem from speaker cabinet vibration where the cables are excited by the binding posts. Previously this vibration would have been fed into the floor and dampened there, now it persists in the lifted cable certainly for 3 m or 10 ft. I don't believe that the movement is caused by a motor effect of high current flowing through the cables in the earth's magnetic field. (See Fleming's Left Hand Rule.) All the best, Rob in Switzerland

If you have mains wiring running under your floors, you may get some EM interference. Syntehtic carpets *may* also act as a dielectric when coupled with the speaker wire insulation adding capacitance to the cable, which *may* roll off the high end.

Actually medication tunes in to lower frequencies in the brain. The lower you plunge the deeper the meditative state you’re in. In fact the purpose of meditation is to filter out the noise and harsh high frequency hiss that the brain stresses over. It’s a bass nirvana that the yogi seeks. My friend and i decided to try this in our respective systems.In my case the cables are short,so have very little touching the floor anyway.Upon lifting what was left,during musical passages to avoid my memory fooling me,then A/B ing also,i couldn't put my finger on any appreciable difference.My friend has much longer cables with greater contact on the floor and believed he could hear a difference.He mockingly called me a ''non believer''.All tongue in cheek ,with no animosity at all.My inquisitive nature does rather push me into looking for real evidence and answers ie who did it first,and why? What are the measured changes? However,i'd say given that one needn't spend alot,why not try? One may feel there is or isn't a difference,but i can't see it doing any harm.I've theorised that there may be some degree of dialectric change when in contact with the floor and possibly a degree of microphony from small vibrations rising up from the floor too,but in reality i have no idea.Sorry if my post is a bit long! Happy listening all regardless of whatever cables( and their height lol) and systems you use.

Seems like it would depend greatly on what your floor is made of. Is it wood, tile, carpet, cement? These would each have different dielectric and electromagnetic properties. Seems to me that unless your floor has metal in it, these materials are not affected by magnetic fields, so how could they possibly interfere with the signal in the speaker cables?

@mfr58
@mfr58 Год назад
Electrical energy is carried in the dielectric, the "conductors", if they are good, just act as "rail" guides. So maybe other dielectric materials in contact can subtly affect the sound....or maybe it's vibration that can modulate the physical and thus, electrical properties, of the cable...As Paul says, you probably need a very good set up to hear these things, if they exist....
@RobWhittlestone
@RobWhittlestone 7 месяцев назад
@@mfr58You are correct - the dielectric makes a difference - that's why cheap cables use PVC insulator sleeving and more expensive ones use Teflon (and maybe air). See my post above to see my experiment with 6" risers and my hypothesis about the mechanism at play. Capacitance is frequency dependent and may be exhibited at low (audible) frequencies as well at higher than audible frequencies. Best, Rob

Tried lifting speaker cables years ago. I was quite sceptical about this tweak, but in my stystem the music became more refined and lively. And the effect was not in the 'maybe placebo' but in the 'impossible to deny' category. I found the tweak too inconvenient and discovered other ways to improve my system. I experimented with mechanical isolation using fishing line to let equipment 'float'. This turned out to be even more effective. In the end I made MDF boards for each device and let these hang on fishing line. I got rid of all the spikes I used before, because it turned out to be a better (and cheaper) way for mechanical isolation. I studied physics and computer science and that makes me sceptical when it comes to audio, but audio also learned me to not immediately deny and ridicule what I don't understand and try it myself before judging.

Laying cable across the floor minimally adjusts the capacitance. It's called stray capacitance. The effect is so small that no, Paul can't hear it, and it's inaudible. You're more likely going to run into hundreds-of-feet-length issues with the LCR of cables before stray capacitance is a factor.

The only reason I could think of to apply cable lifters is to reduce bending stress on the speaker or amplifier terminals when using rather heavy and/or stiff cables. Maybe, if you have a power line running close by, you could actually circumvent potential interference by putting some additional distance between the cable and the source of an unwanted electrical field since a lot of speaker cables aren't shielded 🤷🏼‍♂️

@NoEgg4u

I have been to a high-end audio store, where their flagship system is a dream stereo, and sounds like nothing you can imagine. I noticed that their speaker cables were lifted off of the floor. They used upside-down plastic cups, which looked out of place. But they held the cables up. So why would they do this? They do not sell plastic cups. In fact, they do not sell anything that lifts up cables. They did this because it helped their already spectacular sounding stereo sound more spectacular. Understand that hearing the benefit of lifting your speaker cables off of the floor will not be heard by 99.9% of us, because 99.9% of us: -- do not have $25,000+ stereos (which I believe is the starting point for a full system that can reveal such nuances, such as lifting speaker cables off of the floor. -- do not have rooms designed for quality sound reproduction. -- do not have the expertise to professionally place our speakers X feet from each wall, with the proper tow-in, lift, and distance from our seated listening position. -- do not have room treatments, to deal with reflections (you have them, whether you realize it or not, you have reflections -- with room treatments, you will be amazed at how much better your stereo will sound when you minimize those reflections). -- do not have the proper source material. If you are listening to random music, understand that no matter how much you love a song, it most likely has mediocre sound quality. So if you have some department store stereo, that cost you $5,000, you will not hear what Paul is hearing. You might love how your stereo sounds. But it is not suited for testing cable lifters. For all of the wise-asses that are cracking jokes at the use of cable lifters, you are doing so without ever testing. You can think that you know that a test is useless, and you would be wrong. Sit yourself down in front of a high-end stereo, in a treated room, set-up by professionals, playing cheery-picked songs, and then listen with the speaker cables on the floor vs lifted from the floor. If you chime in with juvenile insults, you are making buffoons of yourselves. Those of us that have heard the benefit of cable lifters see you as envious, clueless trolls. If a wealthy person has a $300,000 stereo, they are not going to use paper cups in their expensive home. They are going to use well made lifters. Not because they will improve the sound more than paper cups. But because they look better, and the wealthy person can afford to make it look better. Cheers!

When I was a kid years ago and first sailed to Nantucket, everything about that place was magical. True story, in the Nantucket tourist shops back you could buy old liquor bottles stamped full of "Nantucket Air", "keep tightly bottled". Perhaps, believing that the air in Nantucket was magical enough to bottle it, made it magical. . I hear this refrain a lot-- "well your system has to resolving enough" to hear the magic in lifters, pucks, green sharpies, $5,000 equipment tables, whatever. Otherwise you can't smell that Nantucket Air. Makes it easy to dis someone else's system: if you can't hear the difference then your system sucks. Do you work in or own a high-end store? Do you really think that a crappy stereo can reveal subtle difference in sound quality? This is not to put anyone's stereo down. However, reality does not care about feelings. There are stereos that reveal differences in every single aspect of their parts. I have heard such stereos. You have not. I know that you have not, based on your comment. Very few people have heard such great stereos. They are hard to find, and you have to know the owners of them to have permission to a listening session. Anyone that has heard such a stereo would not make such a comment as yours. After you listen to an amazing stereo, your listening experience would be a reality check, and you will kick yourself for making such foolish comments. I am talking about a stereo where your eyes and ears fight over whether or not the band is in the room with you. On such a stereo, you will hear the benefits of any tweak, or the degradation of any change for the worse, no matter how small the change. I was fortunate enough to listen, more than once, to the flagship stereo at a high-end store. I purchased my stereo there, so they let me listen to their big system, which was not being demoed by any customers at the time. And I believe your story. I'm guilty of having very expensive cables and interconnects, but I want to know how we audiophiles rationalize the money we spend on this stuff, but yet the rest of the house and electrical distribution is just basic 12, 10 and 8 gauge copper wire?
@Lasse3
@Lasse3 3 года назад
That makes no sense, how can you compare the interconnect to the electrical wire distribution in your house? From the time the very faint miniscule electrical current is generated inside your pick-up which have to travel all the way from through your tone-arm out of the record player through a set of interconnects and into yet another device. We're taking a 0,5 mV faint audio signal (in the case of MC pick-up) I assure you that which interconnects (material of the conductors, insulation etc) and the lenght and quality of the plugs themselves will have major influence on this 0,5 mV audio signal, while it travels towards the RIAA, even after it reaches the 'phono EQ and gain stage, we're still talking a faint audio signal that haven't even reached the pre-amp yet, this audio signal is very easily colored, and yes no matter which component or cable you decide to let it travel through, you will inevitably color the sound, Enter audiophillia, this is where our quest begins, attempting to 'color' the sound in a way that sounds 'good' Your 230 Volt electricity in the house will power your stuff just fine. The audio doesn't run through your house electricity cables, this electricity will only power the amps and dacs / record players, it has nothing to do with the audio. It makes no sense the argument you're making..! You can buy stand alone psu's boasting heavily regulated electricity, that is dead stable. But inside every last high-end DAC or AMP they've already got you covered, with very very stable PSU's... It doesn't really matter what cables your house electricity runs through, but that doesn't mean your speaker cables and interconnects doesn't matter!!!

Interesting no one is taking about the type of floor, which would be a factor. At least one commenter does mention the type of carpet having a dielectric effect. I would think concrete floors with a ground-bonded rebar reinforcement grid could impose on the signal through capacitive effects on a pad built home or commercial property.. Not likely for a wood pier and beam floor over a crawl space or higher story of a wood home.
@HandbrakeBiscuit
@HandbrakeBiscuit 3 года назад
Dielectric materials separate the positive and negative plates in a capacitor. They are typically incredibly thin films, and serve to keep the plates a known, yet incredibly tiny, distance away from each other so that the electrons and 'holes' (lack of electrons) can pull on each other, which is what the physical basis of capacitance is. Saying that an insulating material, such as a carpet, running underneath a cable, or conductive re-bar an inch or more down inside concrete would have a dielectric effect and create capacitive effects on a cable is like saying that if you whisper into someone's ear the sound is affected by the moisture content of the air fifty feet away.
