As someone with a PHD in Aerodynamics. If someone came into my office and expressed drag in "Grams" I would seriously question their aerodynamic proficiency. It's like someone measuring the distance from London to Paris in Lightyears.
@LordVilmore
@LordVilmore 5 лет назад
Cool! could you shed some light on something I've been wondering? So the cylinder shape, or circle from the top, creates quite a bit of drag, as is shown. But if the cylinder is at an angle to the wind direction (eg. the downtube of a steel bike, or most of the cables actually) then the shape of the section that is perpendicular to the wind direction is no longer a circle but a ellips, doesn't this has much reduced drag?? Since the ellips looks a bit like an airfoil with the tail cut short, and aero wheels are ellipses pretty much too.
@Hambini
@Hambini 5 лет назад
@@LordVilmore That's correct, the angle makes the circle behave more like an ellipse which is more aerodynamic. The element of this video with the small cylinder and the huge aerofoil is misleading as it's highly dependent on how fast you are going.
@bobmajew53

Nowhere in the coefficient of friction does it talk about grams. It's a function of materials interacting. For example if you put a very wide tire on your car there will be less pounds per square inch required to support your car, but it does not change the amount of friction you will get, it's a distribution problem. Maybe that PhD could explain it better.

Summary: the new gen aero bikes that completely hide the cables in the front save anout 3 watts @ 25 mph in this regard compared to traditional/light/climbing frames that have exposed cables in the front. Does not seem anywhere near worth the much higher cost and much more difficult maintenance of these new fully integrated aero bikes for 3 watts.

Now a "how to" integrate cables without a $$$ I integrated bar and stem...I simply wrapped the handlebars AND the stem to conceal cables all the way to behind the stem cap where it cleanly enters the frame. I only have one front brake cable exposed which I plan to his inline with head tube by upgrading to an aero caliper like tri rig x
@rollinrat4850
@rollinrat4850 5 лет назад
Internal cabling ONLY make a difference to competitive racers! They will make it considerably more difficult to maintain shift and brake quality. Especially if you replace cables less than once a year. The housings take tight bends through the h bar, stem and frame increasing friction. Increased length of housing also adds to friction. Internally routed hydro hoses are plain and simply a PIA! My old school, 33 year old downtube shifted Dura Ace 7400 7 speed still shifts just as fast and more solidly than DI2 because theres just 8”of cable housing! But DI2 is perfectly suited to internal routing. Traditional External cables with short sections of housing can be made to last longer and are much easier to maintain than internal cables. I have heavily used MTBs where external cabling lasted over 10 years! The newest internally routed designs with tunnels are an improvement. Im a bike mechanic. We’re usually grumpy, so if you bring your bike to me, none of this really matters except when you get the bill AND WHEN you get your bike back. You will pay more for internal routing, one way or another. We charge $20 to replace 1 external cable,$30 for internal OR $1 per minute for exotic PITA aero bikes. I can replace simple cables and housing in less than 5 minutes on the spot, while you wait. Internally routed bikes will normally be put into our schedule 2-3 weeks out. It Might seem dumb, but we’re extremely busy all year. I have customers who travel over 40 miles to have me repair their bikes!
@stefhirsch6922
@stefhirsch6922 2 года назад
Word. Fully internally routed wires are more aero. Aero is good. Few people are going to be in the proper position with a mass produced bike with the original bars and stem. A properly fitted rider makes a much bigger difference than improvement gained from concealed cables. Bars and stems with hidden cables make it MUCH more difficult to change the bars/stem - and therefore MUCH less likely to have a properly fitted bike which is slower and less aero. It also greatly increases the hassle in working on the bike. That also reduces the likelihood of the bike working properly. A well fitted properly working bike is more likely to be faster and less headaches. Pros who have a mechanic constantly servicing their bikes play by a different set of rules. The aero gains are very worthwhile for cat 1 racers/pros but a cat 3 isn’t worthwhile and most of the people buying aero wunder bikes don’t race (ever). Even if the rider is a cat 3 the aero gains might mean that occasionally they win a box of cliff bars at best but their bike is going to be a headache to work on.

I think these videos are very informative. 2 watts saving is nothing; but if you total up the watt savings from all the other videos they've uploaded, 5 watts here, 10 watts there, another couple watts here also, then it all adds up to something significant. A difference of hitting a wall at 40kph on a flat or breaking through it and reaching beyond 45kph. Marginal gains could become massive gains.

Hi Derek, yes this is a good topic. My understanding is that rotational weight forces only apply when accelerating, and that differences between similar wheels are quite small. All in all is something like 1% and much less than 1. total rider mass 2. weight 3. aero drag. Meanwhile, it has been shown that the wheel weight does not matter: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0QDnUkUaQfk.html Long story short: Heavier wheels need more power for acceleration, but the gyroscope effect saves a good amount of that energy. Light wheels are only good for saving weight, but they actually don't "accelerate" better.

@Fastfitnesstips
@Fastfitnesstips 5 лет назад
OK, I looked this up for you.....the difference in drag between a long cage and short cage derallieur is in the region of 5g of drag unless its a huge one like the ceramicspeed OSPW when its around 10g (or 1watt at 40kph). @@Fastfitnesstips Thanks for the quick reply. I wasn't clear. The angle I meant was from the wind, a round tube that's horizontal to the wind obviously has a lot lower drag that a tube perpendicular to the wind. Also, what the wind sees when the tube is at an angle isn't the same shape, at 45 degrees into the wind, the shape is more of an oval and the air would tend to follow the cable on the trailing edge, the way it comes up the fork toward the head tube - at least that's what I think. So, there might be something for people to consider when cabling their older - not hidden cable bikes. Thanks again for the, as always, interesting video.

@@FooFahFoeFum Ah ok I am with you now......clever! actually no because you will have two brake callipers. However if you could miniaturize the caliper into the fork then two *would be better* (because they would double the braking force with potentially no aero loss but you would have to resdesign the wheel too arrg)....or better yet could the braking be done inside the hub magnetically? (the retardation force would be pathetic but enough to slow...not stop and could be combined with a tiny-mini-rotor). Alternatively invent aero shaped brake calipers or a cover from the fork like these: bit.ly/2H7MXv4. However a 100mm or 75mm or maybe 50mm rotor will probably work one sided with enough force.....you really dont need 140mm for most riding conditions front and back , so the easiest of all solutions is to go down to 100mm one sided.

Whatever bike I ride I’m the same rider. So 2watt savings is still savings and makes me “faster” even if faster is still slow.

the real question is why are all the cables on one side on that bike??? 0:10
@amfearliathmor8213
@amfearliathmor8213 5 лет назад
The holes in the frame for the gear and disk brakes cables are on the non drive side. As most online marketing photos are taken from the drive side it looks much neater and more 'hyper'

Yeah I’m not interested in buying a new bike without hidden cables... it just looks dated lol plus aero gains 👍👍👍
@amfearliathmor8213

Lots of holes in your frame, weaker less safe construction. putting a big hole in your steerer tube is just asking for deadly trouble
@rollinrat4850
@rollinrat4850 5 лет назад
Consider maintenance, cost, time and who will do repairs. Remember, its just a bike. One way or another, you will pay more for aero. A bicycles function is to simply roll down the road and transport you. Bikes should be simple!

Im not interested about the watts saving. Im fan of how sleek and modest that is

its fun to geek out on the bike tech for sure, but wouldent shedding a few pounds and cycling a bit more makes any watts saved by super expensive upgrades. thats to the budgy middled men out there with too much disposable income=save the consumerism just bike more if you wanna get faster!

Riding with the mouth closed also saves watts but they will not tell you that. Something to pounder....

Giving the cables a tail is all that they need to do.. make the shape of the cable like a drop of water and problem solved.. Let me know what else you need help with. How stupid are you people?
@Fastfitnesstips
@Fastfitnesstips 5 лет назад
Nice idea. Love to see someone make this work!
@HarryTzianakisTheGodOfSpeed
@HarryTzianakisTheGodOfSpeed 5 лет назад
Only thing they need to do is change the molds that create the cables. It will add a little bit of weight. But the way things are going Aero bikes are heavier so that little bit of weight on a regular bike really wouldn't matter.
@BigFudge87
@BigFudge87 5 лет назад
and how are you going to align them all correctly? Im pretty sure they will be twisted to all sides once installed.
@HarryTzianakisTheGodOfSpeed
@HarryTzianakisTheGodOfSpeed 5 лет назад
BigFudge87 if they can make a cables logo show the right way, I am sure they can make a cable pointing the right way as well. And if not they can always create something to stick on to the end of the cable. Maybe a styrofoam little tail that will stick on to the cables. Styrofoam is very light easy to stick on. Anything else you need answered? Plus I'm not making any money for giving you multimillion-dollar ideas here
@indorock
@indorock 5 лет назад
@@HarryTzianakisTheGodOfSpeedthere is no such thing as a "multi million dollar idea", ideas come cheap, everyone has them. Plus the idea you suggest was literally already illustrated towards the end of the video. The money lies not in ideas, the money is in acting on them.
