After my old cable spool had aged sufficiently, it was time for it to transform into a table that was a bit more appealing. It starts by cutting it down to size. I quickly realized that the center holes are not necessarily centered in the boards. After a second cut to true up the edges, it was off to clean up the table top. There are a ton of nails and other hardware. These give the table the character that I was after, but they also require some careful maneuvering during the cutting, shaping, and sanding process. The legs are 3 x 3 re-purposed steel tubing that are cut at 5 degrees and give the table a finished height in the 17 - 18 inch range. It's important to know that you can cut the table, and legs to whatever you want, after all, it is your table. I use 1/8 X 2 inch flat bar for the banding and a glue that will expand in the gaps that run throughout the boards. The metal is finished with Jax metal blackener, and then a coat of spray on poly. The top gets several coats of a water based poly, because that is what I had laying around.
I am very pleased with this table. It is beefy, rugged, and handsome (like me, right mom ;)).
Please be careful with any project and all tools. They are dangerous and require attention and respect. Since I'm not there to hold your hand, you are on your own and accept all the risk.

Great idea, i'm planning to do the same but making a small dinner table as i live in a small flat, carve out some semicircles at the base so i can then make stools to fit into them when not in use, hopefully also use a glass finish epoxy resin , thank you for sharing your wisdom.

You're welcome. I'm glad it was helpful. I thought about using epoxy, but it is too expensive for this type of table. I think a glass top is a good alternative. Good luck.

@@muddyfences5559 Thank you, yes epoxy is very expensive but i was thinking of just using some pigment and filling the wood imperfections in, i have very basic tools and i like that you do give alternatives to the otherwise "fancy" tools you have, i'm a self taught artist so i appreciate your principles in being a "trier", is that a word? :-)

It is MIG. It's a dream compared to flux core. You could easily do it with your set up.

Thanks I will check in to getting one, any recommendations with descent prices, I just do small stuff pretty much, I’m a retired car painter, so I don’t need a high dollar one, the mig /tig I have is not portable, so would like to get a mig, also would like to do some plasma cutting if you have some recommendations for that also, absolutely love your work, I don’t paint much anymore, Just a little on the side, but I’m into artistry wood working, and would like to mix wood and metal art together.

@@kerrijodierberger I started with a very cheap flux core welder, and regretted it instantly. It seems like all of the main manufacturers (Lincoln, Miller, Hobart, Forney) make an entry level mig / flux core model in the $500.00 range. I have a Lincoln that has more options than I'll ever need, but I couldn't pass up on the deal. I have no regrets going big because I enjoy welding.
