This video looks at different cable types and their most frequent uses.
Correct choice of cable type is essential for the efficiency and safety of an electrical circuit. How we position a certain cable will make a huge difference to it’s expected service life and performance.
Many common, everyday, products can actually have a significant detrimental impact on the cables insulation, leading to degradation of the insulation, increased risk of damage to the cable and much reduced overall performance.
What do the different cable numbers mean, which cables can be installed underground, what cables can be used in rough service environments or in freezing conditions?
This video will give you an interesting introduction to the many factors to consider when selecting a certain type of cable.

Great video, thanks again bud! One question though, my old company used to categorise t&e or PVC/PVC cable as not suitable for outdoor use as a C2 when exposed to direct sunlight.. in your video you have it listed as suitable for "overhead supply to outbuildings if adequately supported by a catenary wire"...?

I was making the point of supporting the cable with a steel wire, perhaps I should have added UV stabilized cable. Thanks for keeping me on my toes. Dave.

Could you clarify something Dave? I was always told that sy cable shouldn’t be used, as it wasn’t manufactured to a British standard. It even states this in the on site guide.

Flexible cables shouldn't be used for fixed wiring. Then its a question of where fixed wiring ends and where you start using flexible if required. The Wiring Regulations state that a product without a BS number or CE mark can be used if it meets the same standards of safety and function as a BS product. There are plenty of reputable manufacturer's in the UK that wouldn't be in business long if their products weren't good. The Regs are code of practice, not law. Hope this helps. Please don't get SY banned, a lot of us will be in a lot of trouble if you do Dave.

@@learnelectrics4402 😁😁I’ll try not to get it banned!! I have seen some discoloured and very brittle sy cables still in use, hence the reason for asking. I know it is even used on the am2, but I just wondered where you stood on the subject?
