From the album ''Mi Guitarra...Tu Y Yo'' (1971) Absolutely the best tango arrangements for guitar by far are by the late great Argentine guitarist Cacho Tirao who i was lucky enough to get to know a little.In the 1980s ans 1990s i managed to acquire (with some help from the great Rico Stover) all Cacho's records which were then impossible to find in Europe.
We finally met in Buenos Aires in September 2000 when i played a duo concert with my friend Tim Panting (sometime reviews editor of Classical Guitar Magazine) as part of the Guitarras Del Mundo Guitar Festival.
Cacho's arrangements of tangos are absolutely perfect imo and this one is my all time favourite.The way it gradually unfolds with some particularly lovely reharmonisation is a Wonder.
Listen how at first the tango rhythm is merely implied then the rhythm suddenly tightens up into pure plainly stated tango.
I love the way he treats the melody sometimes played on the treble strings sometimes in the 'cello' register of the guitar D string.A masterful lesson in arranging.
