Cactus Sianinha
The cactus-sianinha (Selenicereus anthonyanus) is a plant native to Mexico, which belongs to the family Cactaceae. The perfect environment for this type of cactus is in tropical and rainy forests, where they grow epiphytic between the bark of the trees, their leaves are hung.
The cactus-sianinha branches are flattened with lobes that intersect, hence the popular names of cactus-sianinha and also cactus-zig-zag. These branches, which do not exceed the measure of 60 centimeters, where some small spines are concentrated.
For the researchers, the branches of the cactus-sianinha, have a particular form that is the result of a process of transition through which it passed from desert to forest. Making the new environment the humidity was not so simple and that the light of the sun arrived with "difficulty" prevented by the canopy of the trees. It was then that the cactus developed the slender and broad stem so that it could store water and catch the light from the sun's rays.
1. Cultivation
The cactus-sianinha has a fragmented and fine structure and this serves for the leaves to develop. The roots are thrown from the branches, adventitious, and thanks to this they can be fixed in the trees, even in points higher to capture the maximum of sunlight possible.
The flowers of the cactus-sianinha are large and therefore, they become a beautiful attraction of the plant, the size of them can vary between 10 to 15 centimeters, they have petals in cream color, however, they are red in the outer parts. The time of flowering is another peculiarity of this species, the flowers tend to open at dusk, but only reach their fullness along with the fall of the night.
At night, it is the time of day that night bugs and bats play the role of pollinators. However, little is known about the pollination of the cactus-sianinha.
One detail that is worth highlighting is how fragrant the cactus-sianinha flowers are. However, in order to feel this odor it is necessary to wait for the night to arrive, because during the day it is closed again and the perfume is no longer felt.
As it is a plant with nocturnal habits and that they last a brief period, the cactus-sianinha ends up being little known by the people, even by the lovers of the flowers. Another point that makes it not so popular is the difficulty in flowering. This only happens when the plant is in a place that offers exactly what it finds in its natural habitat.
In Brazil, for example, the flowers when they appear, happens only in the month of November. In general, the cactus-sianinha likes clarity, tolerates the direct sun only if it is morning and supports the half shade.
It is a plant that has a beautiful look for any landscape and can also be planted in pots or baskets, but must have a good drainage because it does not withstand excessive moisture. As it is a hanging plant, it must be hung, even when in pots. Its roots are aerial and this causes it to cling and thus "increase" the plant. Therefore, it is a plant that combines planting closely with trees near corners, walls and stones. On the outside it is best to place it directly on the ground.
2. Propagation
The leaves should be cut on the side of the stem. It is important to take care if scratching is done to avoid necrotizing the plant stem. The wound on the stem is an open door for disease entry and also for the dehydration of the parent plant. If there is an injury to the stem, the spot should be sprayed with powdered cinnamon to heal the injured site. The roots can be formed by the edges and cut of the leaf.
The planting of the leaves in the sand should be done in a simple way. One should make a hole with a pencil, stick the succulent stem, tighten it around to firm and wet the sand next. It takes about 20 days for the seedlings to be rooted and suitable for planting in the individual pot. After this time it is necessary to wet the sand or with a knife, to soften the sand around the molt and to pull slightly so that it leaves with roots. It is not necessary to wash the sand that sticks to the root system of the seedlings. After root formation, the seedlings are able to absorb the nutrients that make up the soil conditioner and grow more healthy and beautiful.
3. Cultural treatment
Soil growth: The ideal soil for cultivation must have some factors that help in the growth of the root and leaf system of the plant to allow a good production of flowers. It is important that there is organic matter in the growing soil, as it has good water retention capacity. This organic matter may come in a product such as "Class A" soil conditioner, earthworm humus, animal manure (important to be tanned, sterilized and sifted) or organic fertilizer
