Cactus & Succulent Collection Winter Dormancy | Preparing My Greenhouse

One of the key tasks I have ahead of the cold winter months is preparing and insulating my greenhouse to save on heating energy and costs. I subdivide the glasshouse into two areas using a partition. The main, larger area is where I keep all my cacti and other succulent plants that can tolerate very cool temperatures in the winter dormancy (I keep it at around 4-6 degrees C = 39-43 F). And a smaller area, where all my plants that prefer slightly warmer temperatures in the winter dormancy (I maintain it at a minimum of 10-12 C = 50-54 F) are kept.
Here I have most of my Euphorbia collection, my caudex/caudiciform plants, and also some cacti like Selenicereus and Epicacti. But I also grow some cold house orchids here! Odontoglossum, Cymbidium, Coelogyne are some of the orchid genera that have species that originate from cooler climate zones (e.g. mountainous tropics) and which are perfectly suitable for growing alongside cacti and other succulents, certainly in the autumn, winter and spring months (I keep them outside of the greenhouse, in the garden, during the summer months). I also like growing Cyclamen in this partition and really enjoy their flowers at this time of the year!
I insulate the greenhouse using heavy duty bubble wrap plastic foil that is fixed to the outside of the glasshouse using standard mounts that are glued with silicon. On the inside of the glasshouse, along the roof sections, I have installed long aluminium rods that allow me to "sandwich" the bubble wrap in between the roof glazing and the rods. In this way the foil is neatly installed and allows me still to hang plant baskets, heaters, ventitarors, lights, etc. without any problems.
I hope you find the video useful and informative!
Happy dormancy!
Joe

@@cactusjoe Thank you Joe, so far you are doing all the ones that interest me greatly. If I think of anything else, I will let you know! I especially loved the one you did on types of pots- I could tell a HUGE effort went into that excellent video, as you had the pots all arranged so very beautifully, and set up great examples to illustrate the points you were making. I learned a lot from that video-proving no matter how long we have been growing cacti, we can still learn a lot of new things. Thank you for showing me and your other viewers so many new things! I love the sense of community here with all of us cacti growers, and your videos help to bring us all together! 🌵✊🌺🌸🌵💚😊

Hi Bill, haha, thanks that is such a brilliant comment and possibly quite true actually, lol! If required, there is always space for just one more plant, somewhere, in every cubic foot, haha!! As always, I'm super happy that you enjoyed the video and thanks for your awesome comment!! Have a wonderful weekend ahead, take care and best wishes!!

Awesome video, Joe. Enjoyed watching how you prepare your plants for the winter. I like the idea of a partition and the plants in there look nice and cozy. Hopefully the temperatures won’t drop too low but they’re starting to take a tumble here now, could start getting our first frosts next week. Thank you for sharing with us my friend. Have a wonderful day from Edith & myself and happy growing as always 👍🏻🌵☀️🌺🌼🌸🏜

Thanks so much Daz, very happy that you found the video interesting and enjoyed watching it! Haha, yes indeed I hope that the plants are now finally all nice and comfortable for their dormancy...it took quite a while this autumn, for many of the cacti to stop growing and go dormant - as it was so mild for so long - didn't it? Yes indeed, as I am typing, it is snowing outside and temps are already well below freezing here ...I am always in two minds about this type of weather, haha ...nice to look at, but I'm just not a friend of cold temps...much prefer the warmth and sunshine if I have a choice ...just been hanging around cacti for far too long I suppose, haha!! Thanks so much for your wonderful comments as always, Daz, and wishing Edith and yourself both a wonderful weekend, take care, best wishes and of course happy growing!!

AWESOME Winter preparation video Joe :-D you have an amazing set up for your cacti and succulents for the winter, they will all be as cosy as warm toast, the large bubbled bubble wrap is excellent for the insulation, and thats a brilliant idea with the partition to separate the plants that need a higher temp, we have the same BioGreen heater too haha, all your cacti and succulents are all incredible and your Orchids are so beautiful too,we really enjoyed watching how you prepare your greenhouse and plants for Winter, thanks so much for sharing Joe and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Bavaria for a wonderful upcoming weekend XXXX

Hello Cheryl! Many thanks, haha, it probably looks like more work than it really is - once the setup with bubble wrap and other parts was in place in Year 1, the installation is quite straight-forward in the following years as I can re-use all the parts year for year. And it is great to have the work rewarded by the plants with their wonderful blooms!! Thanks for watching and commenting, much appreciated as always!! Hope you had a relaxing and very nice weekend, have a wonderful week ahead, take care!

@Vera Vera hi there! Many thanks for your great feedback, much appreciated and super happy that you liked the greenhouse and plants! Haha, yes indeed, the Totem cactus is one of my all time favorites, have been growing that one for well over 20 years now. In fact, just a thought, perhaps I could even feature it in one of my future videos... many thanks for that brilliant comment! Cactus greetings, take care and have a wonderful weekend!

Great setup! I’m getting an idea now of how your entire greenhouse looks like. Wow, didn’t realize that you have orchids, too. Those flowers are beautiful. Orchids used to be my garden hobby but I had to switch to cactus when all my orchids died one summer here in the desert. 😖
@cactusjoe
@cactusjoe Год назад
Hi Ana, thanks so much, and really excellent that you liked the setup, makes me happy to share! Well, because my greenhouse is not huge, I have to be very economical and efficient with space, so my setup is geared towards maximising plants per volume, haha! In fact, on that topic, in the comments to this video, Bill sent a hilariously funny comment, suggesting that you and I (quote) "...can pack more plants per cubic foot than anyone else would even attempt!"...(unquote) lol!! Ah yes, very happy that you liked the orchids that I am growing, I had no idea that you were growing orchids in the past too, but very sorry to hear that they unfortunately all did not survive the desert heat - wow, I can only begin to imagine how heartbreaking that must have been for you to lose all these plants! But, every bad thing has a positive side to it, so now without any doubt you have become a true grand master grower of cacti and other succulents with a hugely impressive collection of plants and such a wealth of knowledge and experiences you are sharing!! Hope you have a great weekend ahead, take care and best wishes!

Cool cactus Joe! I also have a tip for you. The hot air raises, so if place about 8 pieces of brick in the middle of your greenhouse. Then you aimed heater downward onto the bricks about 1 meter I space between the heater mouth and the bricks. This is what happen is , that your heater kicked on , it will blown hot airs down and warming up the bricks while heating up your greenhouse. Hot air raises, so your bricks will serve as thermals storages which releases slowly, that may help reduce heat lost!! Cheer my friend!

Many thanks Ziggy, yes indeed the Cymbidium might quite enjoy the company of the cacti! Unless it is already blooming nicely where you grow it at the moment - if not, then the cool temps might be helpful for triggering the blooms. Thanks as always for watching and for your feedback, take care and have a wonderful week ahead!

The rods across the roof inside are a good idea!! I have some rolls of thick felt, about 7 or 8 mm thick that I have been trying to figure out how to use across the roof inside incase of below zero F temperature, like -10F . Those rods would work well!!! Thanks for the info!!! Great video joe!!! Thanks for sharing!!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks have a wonderful weekend ahead!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!!✌️💖🌵🌳🥀🌿🏵🌱🌲🌸🌴🌷🪴🌾🌹😃👍

@@cactusjoe Yes! Sometimes around January, February we can get a polar vortex. Where as normal it may get into the teens to single digits F° , during a vortex we drop way below normal. Yes , dropping us down to 10° F below zero!! It's a real fight during this time when it happens. That's when mother nature and I fight hard!! Her trying to take the greenhouse, me fighting to keep it!!! I usually win!! But it really takes it out of me!! But we will do anything for what we love!!! Have a great day Joe!!! Hi Joe🙌You have more plants than I thought😅👏I also grow dendrobiums and a Cattleya. Did you know all my cacti go through winter with just a polythene cover and it gets down to -8℃ at times. The days are sunny of course. I enjoyed watching🤲🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
@cactusjoe
@cactusjoe Год назад
Hi Newman, wow, no I did not know that, that is literally so cool!! I suppose if they are in completely dry substrate and standing in a protected location like your balcony and with a plastic foil cover, they will be fine. My problem is that once it gets really cold here in Bavaria, it stays VERY cold for several weeks usually, so not much chanches then of warming up during the day times. Yes indeed, many Dendrobiums and also Cattleyas can also be grown in similar setups, alongside cacti and other succulents! Thanks so much for watching, have a wonderful weekend, best wishes and cactus greetings to you in Japan!

Can you just wrap the inside with the bubbles facing inside to the greenhouse and use a small heater like you have in your glass house
@cactusjoe
@cactusjoe 10 месяцев назад
Hi Gary, yes indeed you could do that too. In my case it is just so much easier to attach the bubble wrap around the outside of my greenhouse sides, as it would otherwise mean emptying out all of the plants, pots, tables, etc. from the inside first, if I were to want to attach it there. So I have the bubble wrap inside along the roof parts (easy access there) and outside along the walls (again for easy access). From an insulation point of view there is no major difference I think. Hope this helps, best wishes and have a great day! Happy growing!

@@cactusjoe yes I had to clean it out but I was thinking about the rain and snow
@cactusjoe
@cactusjoe 10 месяцев назад
Ah yes, I understand your concern. The heavy-duty bubble-wrap for greenhouses and gardening is however very weather-proof and also UV-stable, so using it in snow and rain is not a problem at all. I re-use mine and it lasts 5-10 years. Importantly it needs to be fastened well and firmly with the special clips that i show in the video - so that it cannot be blown away by the wind. 👍😎☀️🌵🌵🌺
