About the CAD part, I absolutely agree. Back when I was taking autoCAD in high school, we used to run autodesk on pentium Ds with a GeForce gt 610 and 2GB of ram (this was 2016). Granted we were only running basic 3D models, but that's all you really need.

Also to add, I would reccomend taking a look at used PCs if you can. Intels haswell platform is still great even today.

Yes!!!! used PC's are a great place to start too. It also could introduce you to people in your area that are doing similar things.

Lap Top is 2 x more cost of an Desktop PC. You can run Solidworks on an potato. But serious work whit assembly you need Quadro card, 4 cores whit high core clock and 16 Gb of RAM.

Yes total agreement, however what do you mean by serious?

You should've been around in ACAD v.10 for DOS days!

Thanks for this video. I am in the process of picking parts out for a budget type cad/cam PC. SW and Inventor will be the only things ran in on it. Will be used for learning. I'm curious if you could look my list over and let me know if theres anything to change/swap for similar price. pcpartpicker.com/list/MfBKjc

yea I think that the hyperthreaded pentiums are always a good choice for a budget build. 3.6ghz is pretty good as well. I like the dedicated graphics card that should be pretty good, just for future stuff I would suggest a nvidia card so that you have CUDA for a similar price. For me thats what I am looking into for some real cheap machine learning Depending on the assemblies you work in 2gb vram might be a little low, but with my integrated graphics on my celeron I've never seen any studering with the CNC machines I design. The SSD is a great choice it will make a huge difference with the day to day operation and is well worth the 60 buck investment. This is a great place to start and that motherboard will give a great upgrade path in the future if you so choose. I'm glad that you have the same vision as me for computers in that you dont need a $2,000 "workstation" if you are intelligent and choose the parts with purpose. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the reply! Good to hear, I have yet to do so, but I plan on compiling a few more cheap budget builds just to compare options/swap parts between. So I will be purchasing soonish. I have a pretty good grasp of teaching myself programs/code, so I am hoping that transfers a bit to this, have a bit of motivation going at the moment too. But I currently work in a machine shop and am doing this, to climb the ladder and well, because this type of thing is in a way calling out to me. I'm like an addict wanting to learn as much as possible with this. I've tooled around in AutoDesk and the tutorials I've done are easy to follow, point is, assemblies are probably a little bit down the road. My current primary focus is learning the tools, translating blue prints into simpler/detailed drawings per operation and pure learning. Long road ahead of me, but that's why I am building this cheap workstation. And i agree, the software isn't that intense for basic learning and im allowing room for upgrades for when I make it to the things ill need them for. If I'm going to drop $2,000 on a PC, you better believe it's gonna be strictly for gaming. The dedicated hardware for expensive workstations is all a niche ploy for companies. Keeping one important thing as stable(the drivers) as they can to hold onto Billion dollar companies money, cant knock em but I'll stick to budget builds, tech is almost moving too fast not to stick to budget builds lol. Anyway, thanks again for the reply, glad it got a positive response, makes me more comfortable with the purchase! EDIT: I meant to ask, could you recommend any good books for CAD/CAM? Most books i've seen seem to have heavy price tags as well. Thanks.

Useless video. Not a single word uttered about configuring a workstation for CAD applications. You should rather start a preaching channel , will get more view. I completely wasted my 8 min. And 13 seconds.

Hey man thanks for watching till the end! I appreciate the comment. What is the situation that you are configuring a workstation? Are you configuring it for an engineering firm? Are you a freelancer working on contract engineering? Are you trying to learn about CAD? Are you getting into 3D printing? if you let me know where you are at I can help configure it? Are you trying to build a computer specifically for CAD. Furthermore, your on the internet looking for how to configure a CAD computer, I get that you are frustrated, but leaving negative comments to people in that industry is not the best way to the solution. I apologize for coming off as preachy, but I want people to comment and have considered discourse on a topic that is largely misrepresented on the forums. I see people saying things like "if your doing CAD you need a quadro" and that just isn't true. I honestly look forward to your response, I want to know what your up to I think that it could be interesting.
