I was a Marine Engineer during my time at sea and even all those years ago we were expected to hold a certificate one above the position filled. While steam ships were still in the fleet chief engineers were expected to hold both motor and steam certificates.
Same here. Deck cadet last 2015. Graduated 2017, went onboard as Junior 3rd officer last 2018. And now a full fledged 3rd officer finally. Now about to finish my first contract as 3/O. Lot of new experiences. Super blessed to have this opportunity being only 23yrs old. Nice vlog chief! Drone footage was awesome!
I don't know why I cried at the last part of this video. I used to go onboard Chief as a Deck Cadet. I've been on 3 contracts. Yet I decided to stop for a while to think if seafaring is really for me. After watching this video, I found my answer. Thank you Chief!! Have a wonderful career 🙂
Your right on all of that Chief. Two things I will never forget, getting my 3rd Mate rating and later my Unlimited Masters License. The bridge crews of 35 years ago were a lot different than today and frankly not as soft on the newbies. When I showed up the Captain asked who I was and I told him your new 3rd Mate. He never looked at me and told me to go measure the draft. Off I went with my pen and writing pad I did that 6 times, on the 7th time down the Chief Mate stopped me and asked point blank why the hell I was going and coming so damn much. I told him why. He started laughing so hard he bit his cigar into and told me that was his job and not mine. Furious I climbed back to the bridge to give the Captain a piece of my mind, for the first time that day he looked me in the eye and said, "Kid, it's your job to know your responsibilities, your watch starts at 0100." And that was that. Looking back I get the humor of it. You wanted to get angry and sometimes I did, but you learned from it.
@@mod6525 nahh we asians are the best as an officers and specially in management level. You on the other hand, non asians such as your pathetic self is good not only as ratings, but Also as messman .
Hi Chief MAKOi, What you say about studying, planning, working toward, and, if needed, sacrificing to reach your goals is true for ALL walks of life. It's clear, sound advice for Everyone. Thank you for all the thought and hard work put into your videos.
One of the best written and produced videos I've yet seen on RU-vid. You certainly put time, care, and a search for perfection into this work! The content reveals the heart of this noble seafaring profession in a way like none other. Thank you!
I'm not a seafearer but those words Chief Makoi said about being successful were for all those who works in different industries not only to maritime. Thankyou Chief!
I am an experienced English teacher and I have found this video very useful for my classes. I teach technical maritme English at a maritime university and my students love watching Chief MAKOI's videos. Thanks, Chief MAKOI
I will be joining as 3rd Officer on my next vessel assignment that's why I'm here, the pressure is lingering pero kakayanin! Thank you Chief for the insight!
I've been cadet for 3 contracts and now i signed my first contact as 3rd officer. Let's all not loose hope and as chief makoi said wait for the time to become.
Another great and inspirational Vlog CHIEF... Even when some of us are not seafarers, the way you show daily life at sea make easy to understand how hard is your job and how proud your beloved must be. Thks for sharing. Regards from Spain...
Hey Chief! I really like your videos because it features the reality of what seafaring is. It is very informative specially for me since I was just new in the field. By the way can you make a film featuring the life of an Electrician/ETO on board?
No offense chief, but just wanted to say that you express yourself in English very well. You express yourself lucidly and are insightful. Love the tone (as in - style or manner of expression in speaking or writing) of your presentations. Your videos help me relax. Thanks.
FINALLY MY VLOG KA ULIT IDOL CHIEF MAKOI MY FAVORITE SEAFARER'S VLOGGER.KEEP IT UP CHIEF MAKOI NAKAKA-INSPIRE TALAGA MAGING ISANG CADETE NG PMMA AT MAGING SUCCESSFUL SEAFARER SOMEDAY.
Chief...These videos get better and better. I have bumped along looking at the earlier ones. These videos are good for your company and the industry. Why would anyone go into the Navy when the Merchant Marines offers a better life?
Expectations met and exceed as S.O.P. for Chief MAKOi! Good advice and inspiration for young men with dreams Chief. I fortunate are those who have the benefit of a seasoned mentor with the heart to guide them through all the nightmares that will inevitably be part of the of their dreams as well.
Chief, this is a fantastic VLOG . I'm sure that your job is challenging, and yet you produce this interesting, informative, and very slick RU-vid channel in your spare time! I really admire smart, competent people who can do this kind of thing. I'm just a landlubber but the world of shipping is fascinating to me. The young man, J.R., who has advanced to Third Mate, is an inspiration. Thanks so much for this insight into the world of big freakin' ships and the guys who make them work.
Another GREAT video! What a fine young man, he will go far, the right attitude and temperment along with a lot of drive. He is endowed with "Sticktoitiveness" keep at it and NEVER give up! Thanks again Chief for another inspiring, interesting and uplifting video.
Chief, I’m not sure if you had done a video on Electrician before. In case not, it would be great if you could do one on “Lecky” as electricians are sometimes called. These poor guys very often have to work while ships are alongside to attend to problems on deck cranes with no chance of going ashore especially when their ships are geared. Also almost on every part of the ship has some sorts of electrical stuff to check or maintain.
I'm not a seaman but I'm looking forward to all your videos that inspire me because I have learned a lot from you Idol Good luck sir Pa shout out narin idol. Thanks
Its so cool to see how hard you guys work! Without merchant marine I wouldn't have 90pct of the things I can see in my living room - who knows maybe something I buy one day will have travelled on your ship!
So I was watching this video at work during a period of downtime. I work in an open area with people passing behind my computer screen all night long. One of my female coworkers was silently watching this video behind me when she startled me by saying “He can park his ship in my dock anytime!” I was laughing and she said that the 3rd mate is “hot”. Lol 😂
This is probably the most inspiring video that I have ever seen. I really appropriate theses videos that you put out It gives me a view into a career that I want to pursue later in life.
Chief, A GREAT video! As I'm a "newbie" to your videos, I found this most interesting and helped my understanding of the Officers and their responsibilities. Thank you, Sir!
No matter how high you become in an Organisation, there was once a day when you knew nothing and everything you know today you had to learn. Good Leaders always remember that fact and allow for it. I was once a Senior Officer in an Organisation (2nd in Command) and I judge My Performance not by what I did successfully, but by what the Officers I trained did successfully, after I had departed.
Thank you for this very inspirational vlog sir. After watching this it makes me feel more agressive to reach my dream to become a officer.Thank you sir
@Chief Makoi - my late uncle was chief engineer on a ore freighter in the Great Lakes in America. He was third in command of the ship. Where are you in the hierarchy of command of the ship?
Thanks Richard. I've gotten used to it. Some people will hate just because that's the only thing they know how to do. Well, we can't please everybody right?
Got hooked on your Vlog . Your very easy to listen too and able to explain everything aboard ship in laymen's terms. You have a beautiful family and I'm sure they miss you very much while your working. I wanted to know if you can produce a Vlog on how you treat medical emergency's aboard ship. Do you have a Doctor on board and a medical room, Seems on your long times at sea you would be required to have something.
That's going to be a very short topic but I'll think of something. We don't have medical personnel onboard but ships do have a hospital room equipped with first aid and recovery equipment and various medicines. If injuries are severe or if a crew member suffers from something like appendicitis while the ship is in the middle of the Pacific, it would almost always be fatal.
I was a former seaferer, i was a cook in the ship. I worked for about 18 years. I started as messman, since i was not a graduate of a nautical or marine courses, i know i will not have a chance to be promoted into a higher rank. So the only hope that i could level up myself is to venture to a certain job that will surely get me somewhere and that is to learn how to cook and a be a chief cook. At least my chief na word di ba. In other words naging petty officer na rin ako. That made me feel a little proud of myself. So after thinking it over and over again, i finally decided to take courses in cooking. To be a cook in the ship is one of the hardest and challenging job on board. It is physically and mentally stressful. Food preparations, cookings, mentainance of galleys sanitation down to serving the crews daily food needs plus maintaining the required budget for crew monthly consumption was absolutely tiring. Life around the galley is never ending cycle. From the moment you signed on till the day you signed off. No days off, rain or shine even to the point that the ship is rolling to and fro wheww, cook will remain standing in the galley to provide foods for the crew. But in all of that terrible events on board as a cook i'm still proud of myself because at the end of the day i did my job. No reasons to complaint because it is the way it should be. Though often times i encountered some crews who is very choosy mga reklamador sa pagkain though i've done everything that i can to make them satisfy pero mayroon pa ring reklamo. Parang never ending story or should i say history repeat itself. Baboy, manok, baka at isda. Kahit iba iba ang luto same thing pa rin. Patience and hard work was one of the things that i've learned from that job. It was never easy but it's worth doing it to earn a living for my family. So lahat ng aspiring seafarer learn from those long time seamen. Follow your dream work hard for it. Try to to be polite, humble, know your job on board be dilligent and never stop learning. Because by doing it, it will definitely bring you to the top of your career as a good and responsible sailors. Ngayon stoped nako sa pagbabarko kasi last 2016 i was diagnosed of a heart problem. So it ended up my career. But at least nakapagpundar ng kaunti. Tandaan nyo walang forever sa buhay marino. So take of your health guys. Have a safe vouyage.
Learn to save and invest your hard earned money wisely. Encourage your wives to learn to do some business. Anytime magkaproblema kayo sa medical at di na makasakay pa at least makakasurvive pa rin sa buhay.
Honestly speaking , you are the best narrator ever IMO chief Makoi....I’m not in the field seafarers but made watch your videos because they are pure, honest and interesting informations. I highly recommend to new or future seafarers to watch your videos ...more power to you!!!
Chief Makoi, greetings from Panamá! Chief, could you realize a Vlog speaking about "Chaplans" and "Chaplancy" in the maritime industrie? Exist somebody that could help a seafearer that also is a believer in its duties at sea or just should wait until they arrive to next port? May God bless you and thanks a lot!!!
Im also aspiring to be a seaman and one of the pmma entrance exam passers on 2019. I Hope in the future I will be in this position as well, but the job of the third officers looks intimidating😁
Who does the soundings onboard these days, as the shipwright or the chippy use to do it on the australian coast 👍😎👍 As the shipwright use to be a deck officer on the australian coast
I thought 2nd mate/2nd officer is in charge of navigational watch/equipments and bridge communications , where as the officer in charge of the bridge is the responsible person during bridge duty. While 3rd mate/3rd oic is responsible for the checking of life saving apparatuses , incharge of displaying correct ship flag and designated vessel's shape and lights.
