This feels so much more natural and cozy. I'm tired of other people's reels which are always so superficial and cliche with the lo-fi hip hop music and 0.75x slow motion of literally every shot.

The music for a reel doesn't really matter. It's about showing off what you can do. As far as this reel goes, didn't see a ton of variety in terms of skills behind the camera tbh. The piano shots had really shaky operating and didn't follow the actor's movements very well.

Mind if I ask you question? Is the word "reel" a shorter version of "short film"?

Simple and clean, yet with a real purpose - this is a perfect example of how confident you've become in your craft. Really digging it!

Hello Simon, i have been following you since you started your channel. I am from France but i live in Netherland now. You inspired me so so much over all these years as D4 did also in his own way but tbo i am very surprised about the first shot...0,07' ( is it me or we can see your reflect on the piano...?) I am actually working on my reel and i was so happy and excited to watch yours, but instead i feel...how to express myself...i feel...thorn Please no offense and continue to progress and share with us your best work 🙏

Great Work! Everything 'glows' and it's refreshing to hear audio instead of an overpowering of music :)

Because if you can't hook someone with your reel in about 30 seconds you've lost them already. People looking to hire you aren't likely to watch some bloated 3-5 minute nonsense.

If I may critique, the first two clips are nice shots, but they're very shakey, and the transition from them to the static shot of the paint feels abrupt. I feel like you could fix that with warp stabilizer.
@seanmondejar_

i think the "shake" was meant to simulate film rolling on Super 8 or 16 film.
@walkongrass
@walkongrass 5 лет назад
I'm getting old and spoiled: not a fan of shaking camera anymore; not sure why, maybe because I find the smooth movements of the steadycam or the gimbal much less distracting. Nevertheless, I understand the need of a director to put a signature in his film and the hand-held is a very specific signature, like a very unique fingerprint.

Real issue with it is proving to your audience that it was a stylistic choice and not a mistake or due to a lack of proper gear. Steady handheld can achieve that, at least a feel it does. But I have had professors over the years that absolutely detest all handheld shooting, and while I don't fully agree with it, it has helped me to be a much better filmmaker than I might have been had I just done whatever.

In my view a reel should only consist of the very best material you have made over the last couple of years and alot of what I saw in this, just doesn’t look very pleasing, atleast to my eye. This is not to knock on you Simon or put you down in any way, but I know from following you all these years that you have some footage that is much more interesting than this. The reel also seems very rushed comparred to your old one.

simon put himself in a weird creative position with his youtube audience, his creations seem to give his audience the entitlement of harsh critique and perfection, its like on every one of his videos some wannabe critic writes a thesis about why he doesnt like it, its his art take it for what it is, this isnt a workshop. no one really cares about your critique
@samvalentine9243
@samvalentine9243 5 лет назад
Oof, won't get very far not caring about what others think of your art. To make a living as an artist you are always making art for other people. Living in a bubble hurts both the creator and the audience if it means the creator isn't improving.

@@samvalentine9243oof, says who? Theres a difference between being a commercial videographer and an artist, an artist creates his vision regardless, a commercial videographer just has knowledge about content creation and creates for a client, both can make a buck, one of those definitely lack character as a creative, the irony is for Simon to improve he must ignore his audience, simon positioned himself in a wierd way and all his audience does is criticize his work because he put himself in a "teacher" position, when a teacher makes a mistake the people watching will be quick to point out any discrepancy, meanwhile if he never put himself in that position and just created content that was true. The dynamic would be different between him and the audience, the audience wouldn't feel empowered to correct the teacher, they would accept the art for what it is instead of giving their 2 cents . An artist doesnt directly create for an audience an artist creates what's true to them through their eyes, if done in a geniune manner that truth can resonate with large amounts of people, art teaches people how to see. Being an artist isn't the same as being a monkey behind a camera making a buck here or there

@@eddiemadera3042 says anyone who creates things for other people as a career. Commercial videography is literally giving a client what _they_ want. I am a commercial videographer. If I don't listen to the client in favor of my own artistic vision, I'm going to lose that client. But to say there's no art to what I do is silly. That's why the client needs a videographer. I agree that he put himself in a bad position by playing teacher while he was still a student. That's on him though. He made the decision to start making gear review videos before he was ever even using the gear for anything professionally. People are critical of his art because he started making tutorials before he ever even made any art. He hasn't practiced what he preaches. The ratio of art to tutorials is extremely tipped towards tutorials on his channel. How is theory more valuable than practice?

@@samvalentine9243 in his situation it's actually what was practical for growth of himself and his following, the problem being his following ended up becoming his biggest critics. Yes that's on him, but if you come to one of his vids and give meaningless critique then you (not you) as an audience also lack judgement and self awareness. And I understand your position as a commercial videographer, but you're in business mode, theres obviously creativity behind it and art in certain situations but for alot of videographers like wedding videographers, it's just a transaction to pay the bills, in an honest view of art and creation throughout history it didn't necessarily need to pay the Bills, art was done by an individual/society because he or she had to create it regardless, art doesn't need capitalism for art to exist, but we view that way cus that's what we know. I definitely have a romantic view of art but I do believe art is something that connects us to the divine. Something bigger than us, when you add a business mentality into the mix it strips that aspect of divinity 90% of the time, especially with gig work, but money is money and sometimes you gotta do what's practical.
@samvalentine9243
@samvalentine9243 5 лет назад
@@eddiemadera3042 I understand your view of art, and appreciate that you admit it's on the romantic side. I should clarify: the reason I'm in business mode here is because I understand both sides. Commercial videography is what pays the bills for me but isn't my true passion or end goal. I'd much rather be telling my own stories. However, making videos to pay the bills is still pretty fun and fulfilling in its own way. If I didn't have video I would be working some dead end job to get by while I work on art on the side. That's why I think it's important to stay grounded in reality while still appreciating your art. There's a middle ground. I've seen so many people in Simon's comments romanticizing the artistic side of what has doing when the reality is he can do those things because he also earns money from sponsorships and ads. His situation will not be reflected in his average viewer. I think he could be a bit more honest about that in the way he presents his 'teachings.'
