I filmed this back in the early summer, The ending test drive footage was lost so I never got around to editing it. Thanks for watching and Keep It Outta The Cabbage!!
1 guy, full engine, cross member, suspension out, strip, reassemble, back in - yep, 20 hours. Particularly when it’s an unfamiliar vehicle. Pity you don’t live in my neck of the woods. Nice work.
I started driving in 1968 - 70's emission controls seemed so complicated at first - now I look under the hood of my 78 and 79 Camaros and they seem so simple. Great channel.
LKQ Sharonville is literally five minutes from my house. I've got quite a few odds and ends parts from them in the past. Awesome place, good people! Just realized what that music was from. Mega Man! 😂 That's awesome! 😎
Purrs like a kitten! Just stumbled on your channel about ready to tackle a job on my mom's 2015 CTS but after this video NOPE I'm taking it to my buddies shop where he has a lift.
Great job!! You really know your stuff. I'm a Commercial HVAC mechanic and I know the technology and experience needed to work on modern day vehicles. In my opinion guys like you are more intelligent that a CEO of a corporation. Let some office geek try that job. Your the man.!!
eighthof8 I definitely am (17 hoping to learn about cars) I kinda am in a tough situation because my car makes the same sound and I’m still making payments on the car. I was thinking about engine swapping it and then selling it after I’m done making the payments but I don’t have a garage or a lot of tools to work on it, let alone a lift. Don’t really know what to do about the situation but I’m not giving up on working on cars
@@devonharas9014 cars are fun to work on but you need to be persistent as all sort of vehicles with different problems will come and you have to set your mind to invest in diagnosing equipment and tools. So far I have around 15k in diag equipment alone, 3k on a pico scope along with sister oscilloscopes totalling around 1200. Dpnt be afraid to enter the world of electronics because that's the new thing coming. Any grease monkey can turn a wrench but not all will find hard to diagnose problems such as a jumped timing, misfire due to poor ground or computer supply fault of either.
That buzzing fly would have driven me nuts. I hate it when people just hover over me working. And the frequency of his visits? Gosh. You're a better man than me, Amesie. ;p
An absolute nightmare I’m doing a 2013 CTS and was committed to pulling out the top even though I have a car lift. You are absolutely correct what a nightmare pulling out the top. Zero tolerance available. I don’t know what the car manufacturers are thinking these days. I am now on the fence due to the availability of room I do think I’m going out the bottom now LOL. Rock on!
Bought my 06 STS for 700, I’m swapping my engine tomorrow. All around im spending around 2 grand to get it fixed, its worth it in the long run if you can get the caddys cheap🤝
Question for you? How big of a rolling table do you have for this? Thinking about swapping out an engine over my vacation and may need to pickup a table. Curious on how big I'd need. Thanks!
A Just did a 2017 Ford Fusion Hybrid engi e swap. Made à HD rolling table similar to what you used. Way easier swapping wiring, parts and lines on the table.
Those Cadillacs especially 3.6 have problems with the oil pressure being low. Mine went out early would idle at 10-11 psi oil pressure an no check engine light or anything. Until.. at start up it’ll make a little clacking noise from the timing chain going out.
I’m laughing when I swapped my catalytic converters from stock to test pipes on my g35😂 my engine blew and it sounded exactly like the car in the video. And it all happened the same day I swapped them
2.8LL V6 what?! thought those had what were they called the northstar V8's or at least a V8 in them. at this point hear 3 stories about the cadillac CTS duck the CTS ill never own one. btw awesome job with the engine swap. did you ever rip to see the damage on the inside?
Is the motor worth replacing on this car or should I just rebuild my original moyor I have the same cts and im debating if I should waste the money on replacing the motor or should i just have it rebuilt
Cool music dude, sounds like Masterblaster / Startropics, Mega man, Paranoid (Black Sabbath) Rock N' Roll racing, Born to be wild. Neat job, nice to see the whole subframe down with engine, tranny and suspension. You got another sub :-)
I'm doing this job on 2009 all-wheel drive, I don't have a lift and I work in the dirt. I went underneath my car 4689 times today and still forgot my 10 mm socket.
I wrecked my 2011 STS 3.6 LLT so I went bought a 2008 CTS LY7 beautiful car with a blown engine...I was just gonna swap out the motor and transmission from the STS to the CTS using the STS harness and computers...will that work?
If we got the shop/service manual for this car would it tell you how to drop that Engine and sub-frame assembly? Like how do you know what to do there?
+Colin Johnston no sir it was not their fault, however practically every repair on it is way to cokplex, my sympathy was for the mechanics not the foolish person who neglected to observe proper maintenance
Yes but the engine is expexted to last the lifetime of the car, and the only way to make it more accessible would be to increase the size of the engine bay and therefore the entire car. He stated this was an 05 so personally I'd have sent it to scrap as it's end of expected life span amyway. He has paid way more than it's value for not 1 but 2 replacement engines. But hey it's not my car so.. Btw the mechanics are paid by the hour so it's not really a hardship. I'm sure he is grateful there is work to keep him busy.
As far as I can tell, modern vehicles are hell to work on. Mainly there's no space under the hood. You either remove the cab on Ford pickups, or you remove 6 things to get to the broken one on most everything else. Then there's diagnosis via the ECM error codes, possible but very ugly. I watched one guy do that and I swear his job was more like debugging electronic hardware than wrenching on a car! Do you trace problems via the ECM output Amesie? Oh yeah, did you beat the flat rate hour estimate? That's how to make decent money on flat rate jobs.
20 hours for this job is not outrageous. A customer came to my shop with an estimate from the dealership in the amount of $9,485 for a used engine. $4,500 was the labor. So, I don't see why a local mechanic shouldn't charge half that. The hours marked by the dealer was 24.5hrs.
Is it better to do an engine swap or a rebuild? I have a 1991 ford escort station wagon. 5 speed stick shift with 340,000-ish miles that I just cannot part with for sentimental reasons.. It was overheated and makes whirring sounds like it has no compression so I assume just a head gasket wouldn't do it.... I wouldn't even know how much a rebuild or swap on a car like that would even cost.
I had the same problem bro. To answer your question yes. I swapped my engine sat n the driveway for a year. Take the ecu to dealership with the vin. Then you'll have to get the key reprogrammed
That car cost around 2-3k for the same amount of miles. Ofc used. And this job was probably 5-10k including the engine. And it’s not hard to remove. Only took one person, most 2. Me and my brothers did the same job in my front yard. The engine cost us 500 with 120k miles. So I agree with the comment. This job cost more than the car.

Can someone help me wrap my head around why a customer could justify the expense of a new/used motor X2 and the 20 hours of labor X2 for a 2005 Cadi. I have a hard time wrapping my head around the cost just doing it once.
haha, I figured so and it wasn't meant to be bad against you! I am anal about leftover parts and would rather spend 30 minutes whilst assembling, vs much later hate of broken things :)
@@devonharas9014 yes, but it take one hell of a wiring job and a ton of hours.. Have to refab the motor mounts and install a whole new drive train. My buddy ls swapped his, it was about a 12k job with him doing all of the work.
I got a 2006 Cadillac STS 3.6 that I’m pulling the engine in the drive way out the top and it’s a pain in the ass all ready got the new engine.I’m to old to be doing this shit I’ve been a mechanic all my life .started in the 80s cars to day are over engineered peace’s of shit. I’d take a carbureted 302 or 350 or 327 or 351 any day.
