So I had this crazy idea to build a realistic looking city with no block and natural roads. This is the challenging result! Want to buy Caesar 3 (or other games) AND support this channel? Use this GOG referral link! af.gog.com/game/caesar_3?as=1715648857

There is also another challenge in the past try to judge a city but it's aesthetic than designs. Somewhat of a gradually building outward, and instead of random road, a very carefully designed system to make them look nice, and it's ten times harder than it looks.
@TSpoon823
@TSpoon823 6 лет назад
I've been working with a grid system this my current run through the game. Definitely tough to control walkers but I think a little more fun than just slapping down a block with a gatehouse. Nothing wrong with that approach, of course.
@countingtls
@countingtls 6 лет назад
There are much much more possible permutations in open end designs than any closed loops with gatehouses. Grid-like is just one possibility, even grids themselves can varied drastically. But as you said it's tough to control if you are not familiar with the fundamental walker mechanics. If you know enough and take time to calculate everything, like the tile's seed number in the crossroad tile, It is possible to even predict which direction a walker will turn to at every crossroad, which I don't think anyone would actually do that, but since walker pattern can be observed and determined in an existing road system, it is still possible to get it right with trial and error over time combined with some knowledge of the walker system to get the coverage just about right. Not a lot of effort were put into open end or open loop designs in the past, since it usually is much harder to start with, and takes more practices to get it done and fixed, instead of much simpler and easily stabilized closed loop where they can be copied to any location and orientation and just follow the exact blueprints.

That joint cracking does get to be a bit annoying... : ( It's also not a healthy thing to do :P
@GamerZakh
@GamerZakh 6 лет назад
Sorry about the cracking haha, but have to say it's got zero known unhealthy side effects. Basically trades grip strength for hand flexibility in old age. Some studies even say it doesn't even affect grip.

Actualy, the Romans had well-planned cities. The basic plan consisted of a central forum with city services. the streets intersected at right angles and formed squares. they had almost the same size. Two streets were longer than the other. one crossed the city from north to south, the other from east to west forming the city center. at each end of these two streets there is a gate and towers.

This was the perfect map for a "realistic" city. Build the city on the hill and have the industries that supplied it from the low ground protected by the military. A pattern that was likely repeated throughout history innumerable times.

Haha I worked in design as well, I meant this was the messing around phase of design that normally isn't shown off as 'design' not the actual design output that you would show the client. But yes a lot of design is just messing around.

When I played this game as a child I was building beautiful functioning cities not knowing anything about _efficiency_ - how is that even possible...?
@fouronetwo813

Necessity is the mother of all invention. When you were a kid you just reacted to what the game told you. Houses need pottery to evolve? Just get them some pottery, no thought given to how efficiently it was done.

I think I said it somewhere on the Discord, but originally the game developers seemed to intent for cities to looked a lot more like this, with grid like structure, similar to Caesar 2 than looping blocks. You can still see this on the original game poster and box cover art. Interesting enough some designs I liked to called them "open end" or "open loop" (like clover leaves by whisperwind777) do follow this trend of thought tried to optimize the services in this type of system, and as you said a lot harder than it looks. They are not just for the beauty value alone, but actually worked due to the original intended designs of "random walker mechanics" (which in itself is a misleading term, takes us years to figure out what's actually going on). Services building which send out random walker for services try to cover some kind of wide area through a radius of roads in four directions, if they are place in the center of a road system, so instead of putting them on the end of road, it will be quite efficient of it is in a centralized location intermingle with houses, and aggregated services distribution system similar to food/goods. The trick is that walker pattern around a building is not "random" at all, but determined given a road network system that is already formed and determined. What you see as "random are what players do differently when they modified roads and change them. This kind of design is no less advanced than other very complex system, and can be used combined with other techniques in walker mechanics to make them perform the way you want them to be. On the scale of difficulty for this to be efficient is extremely high. If you wish to follow suit these type of designs in future missions, you might need to read a lot more about walker system beforehand. (The trial and error approach will be too exhausted and will take you forever to get things optimized)

@TSpoon823

Well said as always. I also think desirability issues drive how we lay things out, but I'm learning that this can be over come more easily than we want to think. We tend to want to isolate our industries because of how undesirable they are, but with the right placement, you can even have these dispersed among the rest of the city, rendering tent "feeder houses" unnecessary. I just built a Tingis where my farms/granaries were right up against my main thoroughfare, and the houses across the road were still at GI level. I was surprised. Only two gatehouses (one to connect two granaries, another for my patrician community) on the whole map. I did have a few feeders, but think I will try to avoid them in the future.
@countingtls
@countingtls 6 лет назад
Industry buildings although has negative impact for desirability, but the effect is very limited in range, usually just 2 tiles (except mines, lumber), And the effect of farms are usually neglectable, some(fruit, olive, vine) even have positive desirability effect. You can put luxury palaces couple tiles next to industry no problem. The key is to no pile a bunch of negative impact buildings together, since the effect is accumulative. And I usually don't use feeder. Even if I have to, I'll try to level them up. Usually it's not that difficult, and feeding everyone is quite crucial to city sentiment. Sometimes, I'll even use negative impact buildings to block some of the houses from leveling up, as long as them look nice, or I can not feed them all with particular goods.

It's funny that this is what a typical city may look like for someone is playing clueless, ignores mission 1 advice and makes tons of intersections randomly. Just proves that knowing the underlying mechanics of the game gives you the freedom to make any design work.

When you built your second oil-getting warehouse for exporting, you could have set the second one to empty as well as getting. What that would have done is have it get up to 8 and empty down to 4 in to the warehouse next to it, then it fulls to 8, empties again, etc. This loops and can fill a getting warehouse completely. This means that you don't stabilize at 8 per, instead completely filling one of the warehouses. You can do this with many warehouses and pull in as much of a resource in to an area as you want. It acts like a "Get until full" storage yard from Pharaoh. I use this to saturate an area with a resource or build a trading post near the entrance to the town that can be flushed with resources. Of course, this is kind of unrealistic and would have looked weird in your very nice looking city.
@countingtls
@countingtls 6 лет назад
we can use getting warehouse to do a lot of tricks, this is one of the useful one. And I have learned long ago this can be used to mass transfer stockpile to remote location on the map, then delete the getting warehouse and associated houses, letting the warehouse becoming a freestanding stockpile in nowhere as a mean to reduce the warehouse inside the city stay at lower stockpile level. This is particular useful when sharing storage of many types of goods/food within the same central warehouse, and not overflow it, (especially if some of the goods come from import, which the game will maintain at certain stockpile level depends on population size). Also the freestanding warehouse won't collapses on it own or even employ any worker that deduce the city's labor pool. A very useful trick for super efficiency.

@henrikemppainen2511
@henrikemppainen2511 Год назад
You say never again, but I'd totally watch a series where you challenge yourself to these rules: 1) no road blocks (gatehouses can be used only as a proper defensive structure) 2) all buildings which require labour must be connected by road (no isolated blocks or industries). This is probably closer to how the developers intended the game to be experienced and closer to how it was balanced, and also closer to how people back in the day (before the spoils of the internet) were most likely to play. After all, the tutorials don't tell you how you can fence off sections using gatehouses, nor does it suggest that a single hut makes all the labour available to any isolated road... I think the end result is both more creative, more challenging and chaotic (in a good way), and more natural. For example, you're less likely to need a silly dump of hospitals in the middle of nowhere just to fend unemployment; a more interconnected (less efficient) city where the walkers cannot be prevented from wandering too far will naturally require more redundancy in its services, so you'll naturally have more places to work. Isolated huts bringing labour from all over the maps seems as much an exploit as using gatehouses for roadblocks, if not more so; had the developers intended for global labor pool, surely they just would've implemented that rather than brown walkers? If anything, minmaxing the game with blocks, roadblocks, and isolated huts seems to trivialize the game, making it play and look all the same. It starts to look boring real quick...
@GamerZakh
@GamerZakh Год назад
This is basically what the original developers intended, I asked them haha. My next playthrough will be with Augustus but not sure what parameters yet. Roadblocks and all that don't trivialise the game though, my first playthrough I just did 9x9 blocks for every mission and won. Even without the gatehouse that would've worked. The tricks we've learnt hasn't reduced complexity. Today with forced walkers, roadblocks, and global employment, we're seeing crazier and more creative cities that ever before. Also maps made for Augustus are getting more impressive. The only limit is the person's creativity, whether it's how the devs intended it or with modern tricks.

@TSpoon823 6 лет назад
Seriously good stuff man. I love how happy you got haha. The main issue was the distance between the residential area and the food source, I think. Otherwise, fun to watch again. I'm digging this series. My two cents: when you want to fill culture rating, the advisor is useless. Academies hardly help. Happy gods, theaters, schools/libraries are the way to go.
@GamerZakh
@GamerZakh 6 лет назад
Thanks! And the advisors help a bit with culture. Culture is calculated by the 'average' 'perfect' etc rating in the entertainment and education tab. Raising an average to perfect boosts culture by a ton. I tend to not use academies for that, I spam academies to deal with unemployment haha.
@TSpoon823
@TSpoon823 6 лет назад
Ah got ya. Each venue/building is weighted differently, which is why I mentioned them in that order. So I feel like the advisor is often like "you need more academies" when even perfect academy coverage gives you less points than, say, excellent library coverage (don't quote me). The coverage aspect is so annoying since so often you have to spam buildings at the end. And I don't even worry about unemployment any more. Give the people a 4-6db raise and their put up with almost anything haha.

I did try the warehouse getting method for food distribution on Lugnudum, I eventually won but is felt very suboptimal vs granaries. Firstly because warehouse cart pushers only carry 400 units vs a granary cart carrying 800. And then secondly because of the additional trips required to move the food from the warehouse to the receiving granary. In practice this means to move 800 food from a farm area warehouse to a residential granary via warehouses requires 2 "long distance" trips (to move 400x2 from the sending warehouse to the receiving warehouse, and 8 "short" trips between the warehouse and the receiving granary. That compares to 1 "long" trip from the granary that moves 800 food which can then be directly into the residential granary.
@GamerZakh
@GamerZakh Год назад
Yeah the only benefit for the warehouses is that the cart pushers can go off-road. Granary pushers need a road connection, which can complicate things if not set up right. At this point though I'm generally just doing new things, whether they're good or not.

@GamerZakh
@GamerZakh 5 лет назад
When you place an industry building, it sends out a brown walker looking for workers. That brown walker needs to pass 1 or 2 houses before that building can get any workers. Once it passes a house, it can access your entire population, so when you build industry areas away from your housing areas you need to put 1 or 2 houses with them too otherwise they won't work. It doesn't make logical sense, that's just how the game works.

@@GamerZakh would be nice if it didn't have access to your entire population, but just those from the actual houses. Would force designs where you really needed to have people closer to the facilities everywhere. Adding the 2 tents feels like cheating a bit.

Thanks for the quick reply! Played this game when I was younger but ended when I did not understand how the game worked but when I found your site a year ago I've started playing again! I'll try to check when you play live but I live in Europe and work late hours ...

yo Z, correct me if I am wrong, but the barracks should always be in range of a weapon storage. cant remember if the barracks dude or the storage dude is delivering the weapons to the barracks, but since legionaires require weapons, a far distance between those too can slow down your legionaire production if the barrow pusher cant deliver the weapons fast enough. you relocated the barracks though later on which was a perfection location choice
@GamerZakh
@GamerZakh 6 лет назад
Yeah barracks needs weapons, so being near the weapon production is best if you're making legions. Don't need to be if you're relying on javelins or cavalry though.

Why are you deliberatly late with building markets?
@GamerZakh
@GamerZakh 5 лет назад
I generally don't build markets until I want to feed people, and I don't want to feed anyone until everything more important is settled. Feeding people isn't that important, making money is, so I focus on trade and profit first thing and I don't feed anyone until finances are stable.

What are the hotkeys to slow down and speed up the game so I don't have to open the menu every time?
@GamerZakh
@GamerZakh 2 года назад
They're the [ and ] keys, so depending on your keyboard you have to press whatever makes those symbols.

Maybe check the in-game sound settings at the top of the screen when you are in gameplay? Make sure music and city sounds are turned on and up.

I got up to Lugdunum with designs lik this, but couldn't beat that mission because I couldn't get favor high enough... (Now I know that you need to give one lavish gift per year)
@TSpoon823
@TSpoon823 6 лет назад
Robbedem actually, if you send too many gifts too quickly, the amount of favor points per gift tend to diminish. The key is really to just fulfill every request and not be in debt at the start of a new year.

You don't need to ask on 3 separate videos. The best way today is to get the Julius port. Look up 'Caesar 3 Julius' and you'll find it.

you played well but too many granaries 3 would have done well instead of 5 its basic math see your granaries would not be filled beyond 2400 or else carts wait or walk extra mile to store it in those granaries outside the walls beyond hills now so max input is 2400 now each cart pusher brings 800 so if 3 granaries are getting goods then 3*800 = 2400 out so in = out and everything is still smooth and efficient again to many granaries i hated it

talks about making a realistic city...proceeds t only use the defensive advantage plato just used as a nice view highrise area...no gates at the ramps..no fort at it .none of the critical industrie kept 'safe' behind said gates/walls....all of it layed out like a industrial baron thinking for production in the 1800 centurie rather then a city wanting to be able and keep its critical assets safe in the event of being on its own possibly forced to outlast a sieging superior force by attrition agenst its walls then anything else XD
@GamerZakh
@GamerZakh 5 лет назад
Haha 'realistic' in quote marks. It's mainly to address people who were asking for something other than block designs, I suppose 'organic' would be a more accurate term.
