► In this video, we have a lovely meal at Vienna's most famous coffeehouses - Café Central. Built in 1876, it became a key meeting place of the Viennese intellectual scene. Key regulars included: Peter Altenberg, Adolf Hitler, Leon Trotsky, Stalin and Sigmund Freud. The cafe is still one of Vienna's most popular coffeehouses and serves a range of sweet and savoury food, in a beautiful atmophere and a piano playing.

As a Viennese, I have never been in Café Central, and I don’t know a single Austrian who has ever been. You will not find locals there. Doesn’t mean the cakes are bad but you will pay tourist prices and you will be surrounded by other tourists, if the "locals" is important to you, don’t pick the place ranking first in absolutely every tourist guide. (As a local its hard to not roll your eyes at tourists queuing easily 30 min+ for a cake they could literally get five min away, of equal quality, equally beautiful location, cheaper, without waiting… how much does cafe central pay those guides? 😂) I personally would rather go to the Schwarze Kameel or Demel. If you want an expensive alternative around the corner but usually without waiting. Café Landtmann is fantastic too, as well as Café Schwarzenberg. If you want to go for a chain, try Oberlaa, very fancy and multiple locations, if you want to go cheaper for maybe your daily cake intake go to Aida. Cakes are great and quite a bit cheaper. Café Hawelka is known for its good coffee so if you like in house roasted coffee that might be a nice alternative, most cafes actually roast their own coffee. Some places have a very nice garden at the back, hidden away that you might enjoy. If you prefer tea check out Haas&Haas for their selection, they have the best hot chocolate in my opinion.
