You push the red button all the time and the magic juice is gonna stop working. Serious. It will, I guess, boost your metabolism and help burn fat, but you watch those metabolic changes or you'll lose muscle mass to that fast metabolism and then what happens is that you're stuck with the side effects AND losing fitness, if you do not eat enough to compensate. The smell of ammonia does not come from burning fat, it comes from burning protein---which WILL lead to loss of muscle and fitness if left unchecked. Burn a thousand extra calories in a workout and then STILL have an elevated metabolic rate for another half a day----you have to eat a four thousand calorie diet (4000kcal) just to maintain your body structure if you weigh less than 9 or 10 stone. Burning the candle at both ends will eventually lead to osteoporosis.

Caffeine makes me anxious even in very small amounts. However, I've found that having a coffee before a run is fine. It's like that nervous energy doesn't have time to develop as it's being used to run. My best runs have been after a cup of black coffee and a protein shake.

Caffeine does the same to me; running/exercise helps with serotonin regulation which is crucial in warding off anxiety and depression. You might even find that having a coffee after your run, rather than before, is also fine. But don't have any more than that in a day, especially in the afternoon/evening as that'll affect sleep (at least that's the case for me), and good sleep is another crucial mechanism to regulate serotonin levels.

Coffee seems to raise my resting HR by 3-4bpm and it takes about a week for the resting HR to go back down. I discovered this when I quit Coffee for a month. A week after quitting the resting HR goes down. I've repeated the experiment a few times with consistent results.

As both a huge coffee snob and a runner I was excited to see this! Worth noting also that the caffeine content of coffee is highly variable - robusta (the cheaper coffee most commonly used in instant coffees) has a higher caffeine content than arabica (the nice stuff). And darker roasts have less caffeine than lighter ones! Personally I drink 1-2 cups of light-roast arabica, pourover brewed, before I run :)

Coffee helps me get started on the days I don’t run first thing. And if I do, enjoy the post run cup as well. If I’m trying to go fast or far, I’ve tried both the gels and gum. They work well, but I’ve found when doing both types together I need to watch the “feel goods” ahead of a run or else I go out too fast.

I normally drink two cups of coffee (max) in any given day (americano with oat-milk) but never before a run/race. I once consumed an SIS caffeine gel at mile 19 in a marathon, that was an intense hit! Which gave the desired effect instantly. Maybe I will try that again for my next marathon as it helped. Maybe I would have coffee before 1mile or 5K race but certainly not before Marathon or 50K as early increased heart rate leads to ultimate collapse after legendary 20miles but starting to have caffeine drinks at late stage (after 18mile) of long race feels beneficial as heart rate already has increased and won't go down before finish line. All personal and individual opinions but safe to try at home ☺️

I definitely get a power boost from caffeine, but I have to be careful not to drink too much. Fueling food wise is key for me to balance my caffeine consumption and the happiness of my stomach. (I easily fall victim to nausea from over-caffeination.) I've also found that my body needs more like eight (or more hours depending on the caffeine's source) to metabolize the caffeine enough to not spend half the night tossing and turning. Caffeine and I are frenemies.

At 2:05 Kate tells us caffeine can burn fat as fuel, thus conserving glycogen stores. I was under the impression that burning fat is far less efficient than glycogen, hence why when we get to around 20 miles in a marathon we can hit the wall because we've run down our bodies store of glycogen. My personal experience shows that if a heavy coffee drinker abstains from caffeine for a month prior to competition they will get a noticeable boost. I haven't personally experienced this in an endurance event such as a marathon. Perhaps caffeine would cause the body to run on part fat, part glycogen during the race. If this is the case then theoretically you'd have some glycogen left in reserve for that last 6 miles of the marathon. Anyone got any thoughts on this?

I get little to no effect from caffeine. I need to take at least 400mg to notice any effects. I genuinely skip it all together. The biggest impact that I've noticed on my trail running is hydration. If I don't hydrate enough I'm often sluggish. A banana, egg or two and 20 - 30 oz of water before my warm up is perfect for me. Thanks for the video I appreciate the info.

Caffeine is the ultimate PED: safe, legal and effective. It does make me more anxious though.

Thanks for watching! Do you control how much you drink caffeine?

@@runningchannel I used to drink about 5 cups a day but the anxiety and insomnia was stupid. Now, 1 a day and not after lunchtime unless I'm doing a more intense session in the evening!

Hey guys! Excellent video, as always, thank you! I am a coffee enthusiast and I do drink a fair amount (around 4-6 cups), especially in winter. I have experience with the "quick onset" benefits of caffeine while running, however, I was unaware that it can be good for glycogen uptake. Thanks for that! On the negative side (maybe someone on your side can clarify this?) I have read that caffeine can promote protein degradation and inhibit protein synthesis. If this is the case, would it be better then to avoid caffeine during recovery periods?

When you say, “3 cups of coffee” do you mean 3 multiplied by 8 ounces, or 3 multiplied by a 12 ounce coffee mug? My mugs hold 12-14 ounces of coffee, but a cup as a measure is 8 ounces.

I'm normally a tea drinker but for 2 weeks I started drinking about 4 mugs of coffee a day. It wasn't good for me, I started getting quite bad aching legs so stopped drinking it completely, it took about a week to recover. Coffee also for me never makes me more alert or gives me an energy feel.

Interesting - was there a particular reason why you switched to coffee? Sorry to hear you had a bad reaction to it.

@@runningchannel I was having a lazy few weeks, it was easier to make 🤣which made it easier to drink more. I would normally just have one or two coffees a week. I'm glad I stopped drinking it and am all good to go again. Thanks for the reply.

Coffee or tea doesn't work for me either i always feel sleepy after a cup of coffee , but caffeine pills or red bull and other sorts of synthetic caffeine seems to work well for me , maybe you should try that.

I used to always have espresso before a run, my machine don't work anymore so obviously don't have one, I've not noticed a difference to be honest, so i won't start again when i get my new machine

I’ve never really consumed caffeine. I’ve never had a drop of tea or coffee, and don’t really eat chocolate, just a bit at Easter once a year. I tried a Maurten Caf gel a few months ago 😃 I ended up in bed all day with nasty stomach pains 😮

I completely quit coffee for about 2 years because my consumption had gotten ridiculous. The first coffee after that break had me sweating buckets with a splitting headache 😅

I should swiftly add that Maurten gels and drinks are amazing and I use them in all my training and racing. I’ve never once had any issues at all. It’s just caffeine my body can’t handle.

Not had the Caffine Maurten but the normal ones are the only Gels I can use that don’t give me GI issues.
