In this Your Health segment, Dr. Stephen Pollock, a cardiologist at the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center, discusses how caffeine affects the heart.
I quit ALL caffeine cold turkey, suffered for a week. Since then my energy and ability to focus has soared. The other benefit I've noticed I'm much calmer. Will never go back to caffeine.
I was getting unexplainable chronic fatigue and most recently was having breathing issues. Realized all of these issues started around the time I became heavily addicted to caffeine. Quit caffeine, all forms including tea and pills, and the fatigue is gone and so is the chest tightness.
@@kw6713a I felt that too for a few months but it gradually went away to the point where I didn't need caffeine to feel normal. Withdrawal for the first week or two is brutal but it gets better.
I'm on a complete caffeine free kick and am finding more and more I think it was a major stem of many personal issues I encountered in my early and mid 20s :/
@@jdc9023 I think the person got sick and didn’t drink coffee for a while because of that. It happens. Or maybe they were into “energy” drinks and quit while sick?
@@jdc9023 I don’t know about this person, but I could no longer taste the coffee when I had it; it tasted like water. So I gave it up coffee for that time and no longer crave it.
Then? I'm guessing you have an American accent as 'then/than' seem to be pronounced the same in most accents in the states. They mean different things mind.
That’s the doctor I can respect. 👍 He actually asks his patients what they consume: drink and eat. So he just tells them to quit caffeine or whatever else bad they’re eating or drinking instead of prescribing more drugs. 👍 It’s an extreme rarity nowadays. NONE Of my medical doctors ever asked me about my diet. They want to prescribe drugs or procedures. Gotta pay off that student loan. 😆
Yeah, the milk and sugar added to coffee are mostly why those drinks are unhealthy for you. Coffee itself, however, is related to lowered risks of cardiovascular disease. White sugar i.e high insulin is the root cause of diabetes. The so called doctors will only treat the side effects i.e high blood sugar levels. FAST people it will reverse type 2 diabetes!
Caffeine is the new smoking problem. Additionally sleep is the most important function in our day without it watch your health disappear, caffeine has a half life of up to 8 hours. Most people wake up with caffeine still in your system from the day before.
@@tbhc415 - yes it’s poison, like all things it’s not going to effect the young, after 20-30 years your heart is the first sign, common effects it raised you sensation of heat, dehydrate caused mineral loses, also leading to heart problems.
@@rethinkscience8454 Caffeine in moderation can be very good for you. A little caffeine is good for you. It decreases chance of getting different types of liver conditions. But fair enough I can see why you think its poison. It is in a way. A Starbucks Cup has 330mg of caffeine in it. Thats absurd yes I agree but a little in a little while won't do much haem
rethink science .. i see it similar to alcohol consumption in the 60s 70s and 80s,,, just watch programmes like Columbo, or the sweeny ,,, they were always on the booze ... in those days it was so acceptable
@@jamescalifornia2964 The thing about Caffeine in my thoughts is that sometimes Coffee affects me as a Sedative and other times its a Stimulent ,Kinding of thinking of Coffee as maybe a Adaptagen and how its made , amounts ,etc.
I stopped drinking caffeine seven years ago because I have atrial fib due to a congenital heart disease. My heart beat literally went down 7-15 bpm and I stopped having a-fib, naturally.
Wow thanks for that you have made my mind up. I have con gen defect as well (pulmonary atresia ) I've gone into AF as well and had heart failure symptoms, my dr has recommended I give up caffeine. So let's give it a go
Giving up hard drugs , weed and psychedelics was easy for me , giving up nicotine was a LOT harder but eventually done it BUT i still can not give up coffee! , i tried but gives me bad headaches even for nearly 2 weeks and painkillers gave me stomach ulcer (lol) ..went back to drinking coffee again , much less headaches . I started new strategy: gradually reducing amount of coffee , now i am at less than half teaspoon (got some headaches but more manageable) ...., the war with coffee goes on for now , will not give up .
@@Tatyana_Co i won the war! , no more coffee for me but watch out as the headaches can continue for few weeks . I also went on keto diet for few weeks and seem that helped to not crave coffee ...but i do started cocoa powder with yogurt (2tbs) and not sure how much caffeine that have lol
I was a coffee lover but doesn't drink more than 3 cups a day, i had irregular heartbeats, discomfort and digestion issues like acidity. It felt like something was wrong with my heart and stomach so i quit the coffee and trust me within a week everything is get back to normal.
So intresting. I have drank 4/5 cups of black coffee nearly everyday for about 6/7 years. The last couple years I have had these funny heart pains like once twice a day.... Which has resulted in alot of anxiety. And recently I had an ecg heart monitor thing as am joining the army reserve. The doctor looked at the results and said something wasn't right and I had to have my heart scanned....There was no heart diesese or problems. But made me wonder what the issue was... After listening to this, am releaved in a sense to know it's because I have been a coffee/caffeine addict for years and has been beginning to effect my heart... So thanks. I stopped drinking caffiene 3 days ago. All anxiety has disappeared and have felt no strange heart palpations... Thanks doc, I will continue on the decaf 👌
@Skylar Breeze been off it for a whole year now. Everything is fine with me now and have no nervousness or anxiety. I drink decaff and recommend it to everyone :) stick with it. Am sure you feel the benifits :)
@@startraderpaulus4294 an update. I still dont drink caffiene.... (maybe a coke once every couple weeks if that), just drink decaf. Never suffer anxiety or heart palpitations/pains anymore... I am next to certain it was the caffeine.
@@KieranMarsden19 You say you stopped drinking caffeine, but still drink decaff. I hope you realise decaff contains caffeine? So instead of saying you quit, just say you've reduced.
Thank you so much for just spelling it out. BP 140/86 during the day. I drank equivalence of 6 cups of coffee to get me through my last 15 years of work. And the number grew every year. Now 64, I set and put around the house and when I drink the second Mr. Coffee pot, I have a stomach ache that is very noticeable. I start water then. And an hour or so after dilution, the ache does go away. As they say in waste water treatment, don’t tell the EPA, "The solution to pollution is dilution" Seems its true. A doctor told me coffee does not influence your blood pressure.
I have had at least 2 × 8 oz cups per day since I was age 12 and about 6 cups per day since age 30 to 41. I had lots of energy but often at the wrong times. I quit coffee and all other forms of caffeine recently. Life really sucked for about 10 to 14 days (headache, poor coordination, was tired, walked slowly), but I felt great after that period. Work, exercise, calmness and sleep are all much better now. I feel much healthier.
@@judaspreistvlct Interesting. I didn't know about the different teaspoon sizes in ml. Here in the U.S., a teaspoon is 1/6 of an ounce (0.167 ounces), so you need six teaspoons to make 1 ounce.
He said 4oz. The cups were small before 1990 in a cafe. Then they came out with the MUG but the first mugs could only hold 1 measured cup of coffee + cream.
Common misunderstanding. Historically a "cup" of coffee is between 4-6oz. They are refering to the size of a single serving of coffee as a "cup" of coffee, not the standard american measurement of a cup which is 8 fl oz.
Salt doesn’t necessarily raise blood pressure in all people. And adding salt to your diet is really healthy. Especially Pink Himalayan Salt, Rock Salt. Also a small touch of table salt because it contains iodine which is a mineral found in salt or certain foods that help with thyroid regulation. You will usually find that people who are told not to add salt to their diet are usually in poor health because they’ve eaten a lot of sugary starchy foods and caused them to be overweight or diabetic or at risk of cardiac issues. But usually even people suffering with hypertension are still able to add salt to their diet, it actually helps hypertension in some cases. I would not restrict salt from a diet at all. Caffeine however I would limit or even cut out for a couple of weeks. Being dependent on something to get you through the day or something you can’t go a day without is a problem that needs to be controlled.
No harm in trying it. I'm there perfect subject in caffeine consumption. For 30 years eating no-doze every day. Having symptoms of exactly what you described.
Today is day 2 of no caffeine. Caffeine amplifies my anxiety and gives me jitters. Sucks feeling like that for 6-8 hours and nothing I can do but wait it out.
I quit drinking caffeine because I have pots and it was hard at first but totally worth it. Now if I have caffeine it makes me feel so gross and dehydrated plus it gives me heart palpitations
Thanks for your interview.i take strong coffee at work because I work late as a nurse and found myself with big heart pain.I also drink coffee cans green tea all day long I figured out I had to stop
I am on risperidone ( an oblong shaped one) and having coffee a couple of cups a day was fine. Just a couple of years ago outpatient clinic changed to a tablet named risperidex and I started having racing heartbeat or irregular heartbeat and anxiety problem when I have more than one cup of coffee. Now I even have to reduce my instant coffee to 3/4 of a 20gram sachet. I am just glad that I do not have positive symptoms and a controlled mental health but now have to manage my food and coffee intake to control new problems like irregular / fast heartbeat or anxiety.
Get a glass of organic honey mixed with some fresh lemon and warm water every morning, and you gonna feel great all day long. My body knows that as a coffee that is it!
Leonel not trying to be a smartass but what is it that makes honey organic? Special bees? All raw honey is organic. However if you slap organic on the label you can charge $5 more.
Coffee gives you dopamine and cortisol. Happiness and stress. So never go above one cup and only in the morning, that way the benefits will outweigh the negatives.
I believe to the revelations of the doctor. I myself experienced such. When I drink coffee, I feel different on my chest. My heart have irregular heartbeat.
6:29 - in many states, you DO actually need a physician order for a coronary calcium CT scan, even if you’re willing to self-pay cash out-of-pocket on the spot.
I was on statins and started having all kinds of muscle pain. I thought I was dying. When I told my dr. he said to quit the statin. The pain went away. Sugar is the devil.
i was addicted to coffee and caffeine.. it was horrible i would buy the doubleshot espressos in a can and spend like $70 on them and drink on average 2 per day.. but some days i drank more.. it was a horrible addiction.. i got to where i would pretty much do anything to get the espressos.. not to a crazy point or anything, but i just mean i would always find a way to scrounge up enough to get another can.. it was a horrendous addiction.. it got to where i thought the answer to everything was coffee.. headache? coffee.. stomach ache? coffee.. bored? coffee.. need to wake up? coffee.. need to relax? coffee.. all i can say to anyone struggling is this... 1. pray that Jesus sets u free 2. think about the money u are spending 3. think about your health (especially if u are having heart palpitations or twitches in your face) 4. think about how your mood is affected.. (being on strong coffee and dehydrated used to make me unreasonably impatient and angry) 5. think about the reasons why u abuse caffeine and take a step to attacking that reason.. like for me i was abusing it partially because all work was boring to me (college and jobs) then i graduated and i got a job that isnt as repetitive/tedious and even tho my job has still been irritating from time to time- it doesnt make me feel like i need coffee to do it
After buying a smart watch that monitors heart rate, I quickly learnt my 8-14mg a day coffee habit was causing me some serious issues increasing my "rested" heart rate to 95-105bpm which is very poor. No coffee for the day its between 78-88bpm which is still a tad mediocre due to a bit of extra weight and not enough exerciser, but I now have clear evidence for myself Caffeine is facking terrible.
I cough but it's just a symptom. All I can do is wait and take an aspirin. Aspirin calms me down because if I have a heart attack or stroke then I probably won't die. I don't think energy in diminishing returns is this important.
@@Pallo87 well it sure gives me enough stress to think and do the things I need to get done in a day. Especially when I fell sluggish and my mind is not thinking fast enough. Caffeine does help with alertness and getting shit done.
I allow myself to enjoy caffeine once per week. I don't become reliant on it, it kicks hard every time, and I don't have to use much to get an effect. But best of all, I don't have to completely cut it out of my life. I have 1/7th the side effects, but it's likely not linear, rather exponentially lower, could be 1/100th the side effects of daily use perhaps.
I'm going to cut down my coffee after watching this, I chanced upon this a s a result of trying to do something about chest pains. Great thing about coffee though is it's a natural laxative..must dash, am serious, Mr Whippy is on the way
in my experience with caffeine addiction, I realized the thing about needing more is only because you get mentally addicted to being at top caffeinated levels, and if the feeling is any less potent, I added more caffeine to feel the same boost.. however, after being hooked on 5 hr energy for 6 years at a min. 2 bottles a day with 1 or 2 cups of coffee on occasion...I have brought my intake down to 420mg on average per day. I've gone days at 225mg ... my ultimate goal would be to go all day on 100 to 125mg caffeine.... however, my job isnt conducive to an active lifestyle, and I sit at a cpu for 8 hours a day. sitting makes you tired faster because humans are meant to move.
From my experience, in my grandmother's day's they all drank coffee and those people lived into their 80's and 90s . In my opinion these doctors want to keep everyone on medicine. Its a big business.
They also have way better genes than us, better environment, better food, way less stress and slower lifestyles and way more active lifestyles, no smartphones, computers and television only had few channels.
They did but what was coffee back then was a dose of 50 mg of caffeine.Maybe they have it twice a day so 100 mg caffeine max.Now with all the energy drinks and shit the amounts of caffeine are ridiculous
I recently noticed abnormal heart rhythm and rapid heart beat even though I am resting. I am 43. normally drink one cup/mug a day at home. Have done this for years. Suddenly I am having this but I do know when this started I switched to my husbands stronger brand of coffee. I went to the doctor and no high blood pressure and normal EKG. But high pulse rate like close to 100 beats per minute resting. I am going to cut back and see if this is the reason. If it is I guess I am going to be a decaf coffee drinker :(
I’m on day 5 no caffeine (3-4 energy drinks a day prior for the past 3 years.) I too feel my lung function has been improved dramatically. Always had shortness of breath before.

Coffee is DROWNING IN PESTICIDES, fungicides, synthetic fertilizers, herbicides and insecticides. More than ANY food crop. Many coffee-growing countries still use pesticides banned in the US and Europe. Like wine grapes covered in chemicals, growers DO NOT WASH THE BEANS or the grapes for that matter. They spray they shake the beans and grapes down and start processing. Washing would cause molds and fungus and introduce other problems.
With all due respect, calling it a stimulant is misleading. The main mechanism of action is binding to adenosine receptors, which then prevents adenosine from binding here. ATP is "energy", with the left over product being adenosine. After ATP is used for energy in the body, the adenosine binds to adenosine receptors and signals the body is tired. If all adenosine receptors are filled with caffeine, then the body cannot be signaled that it is tired. A good analogy is putting a block of wood under the brake pedal of a car, caffeine isn't hitting the gas pedal but it is preventing braking.
that huge cups of coffee have the same amount of coffee shot as a small cup of coffee, it just has more milk in it. all these coffeess have an espresso and the rest milk according to the cup size. right #/?

I always wondered why Andy Griffith could drink coffee after dinner on the show and be able to sleep. His little cup was probably 30 mg. caffeine. 60 years gone by.
I've switched My second mug of the day with Folgers Decaf. I drink a Mug of Maxwell House to start My day. I was tired of losing the circadian wheel of fortune.
I drank a C4 energy drink at the gym today, I thought I was going to pass out, anxiety to the Max l, I saw my FitBit resting heart rate at 145 so I took that shit off, I took a knee to breathe better, felt nauseous af and was chugging water to flush it away. People asked if I was feeling okay and I told them "better than ever" knowing damn well I was at the verge of a heart attack. I been taking caffeine since I was 16 I'm 29 now, I use to enjoy the euphoria motivation and drive but lately all it does is cause anxiety and panic attacks.
lol once caffine hits your bloodstream no amount of water will help you out. you just gotta wait it out. once upon a time i could enjoy a cup of coffee a day and it wasnt too bad. but now i am older i am super sensitive to it and i make sure avoid everything i can with caffiene whichi makes me sad because i love the taste of coffee but ill take not having a panic attack over good tasting coffe any day of the week
My dad drinks one a day in the morning and that works for him. One time I made him quit for few weeks and he was never as upbeat or energetic as he was on coffee. Never drink more than one and in the morning and that way the benefits will outweigh the negatives. Only have two sometimes for fun and when you have next day off so youcan get enough sleep.
I took about 600mg of caffeine from pre workouts basically everyday for 2 years and it triggered underlying anxiety and still trying to figure out if i have abnormal heart rythms. Lost my fit body, my fitness life, and drive. Not worth it to take large amounts of caffeine daily. I look back and would rather workout after taking caffeine from a chocolate bar.
Everybody is different, some people like my grandparents can drink it with no problems, and then there's people like me, who stay away from that poison lol.
My doctor has prescribed statins for years FOR ME. All they do is stack up in my cupboard. I DON'T Take them and haven't since my stroke in 2013. I take vitamins, GCMAF and Niacin. Haven't had any problems since.
