Cairo, Illinois, sits at the very tip of southernmost Illinois at the Confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. In the last half of the nineteenth century, the town boasted five railroads, nine steamboat lines, three hospitals, five newspapers, and even a board of trade. But the dead could not rest there. They had to be buried in the nearby Mounds and Villa Ridge. Beech Grove Cemetery dates from 1855. The Cairo City Cemetery was established in 1864. Calvary Catholic Cemetery dates from 1855.

It’s very sad to see Cairo today. Some of the finest homes you’ll ever see are there but they’re rotting away.

My uncle lived in a mansion in Cairo in early 1960’s, he owned a bunch of towboats

I visited Vicksburg, Mississippi during their Tricentennial celebration. They have the "VICKSBURG NATIONAL MEMORIAL PARK" in which they have the "USS CAIRO MUSEUM". They have a civil war battleship built in CAIRO, IL. It was there that they explained that the correct pronunciation of CAIRO is actually "CARE - OH". It seems that "CARE-OH" built war ships for the Union Army during the Civil War. It was quite interesting. Anyone from "CARE - OH" should visit the museum given the opportunity.

Thank you for the comment. Mound City is where they built three ironclad gunboats during the Civil War - USS Mound City, USS Cincinnati, and the USS Cairo, which is now on display in Vicksburg as you mentioned. Four other gunboats were built at Carondelet, Missouri. The seven gunboats served as the vanguard of the Mississippi River Squadron - a brown water navy consisting of 80 boats. The Mound City Naval Depot served as the repair facility for the squadron throughout the war.

The other pronunciation is "Kay-Row."

The maintenance on huge old homes require plenty of money, that's why I wouldn't want one, even if you gave it to me.

Who is this Narrator? His voice sounds familiar, he could have easily been the Narrator in the old Kraft Commercials that aired ti sponsor particular movies ir shows in the mid 1960's, and/or on an A&E Biography, back in the 90's when A&E was "Arts and Entertainment", miss that Channels Producer, and the decision maker whim selected what was to be aired.

Hi Bethbartlett5692 - The narrator is Rick Williams, a retired university professor when the recording was made in 2010. I do not know if he narrated other projects. He was the most gifted voice talent I ever worked with. Rick passed away in 2021.

Excellent point, and no, we should not. But the 1909 reference is another story.
