My different perspective is this, I believe the lack of popularity for Wilson is due to how she came to the public stage. People want sport heroes - who have a talent which is developed organically and rises up through Fair competition to the top. That is precisely what Caitlin Clark gave us. If Aja Wilson had come up through a non talent- GateKeeper program, an Iowa or Colorado or K. State, or even a smaller school, she would have had her own narrative. She would actually have a college story that is inspiring and engaging. Instead she came up through a team that is stacked with four and five star players two squads deep, the same as we have seen with Uconn for so long and nobody has ever cared about the championships won by those teams except for the homers. Imagine if Michael Jordan played on an All-Star team that ran 10 deep in All Stars. We never could have called him the greatest then. So Wilson is the victim of a broken system in college that does not manage talent parity and which kills interest at Large. Caitlin broke that Monopoly, or nearly so, and with such inspiring style and record breaking play, with a team of over achieving journeywomen and the best coaching - it would be impossible not to be inspired when watching her Hawkeyes play. Nobody is talking about this though because everybody is supposed to applaud Dawn Staley and SC. That's ok, but blind to the fallout of parity destroying leagues/associations. The fact is stars have to be made before joining an All-Star team and stars are very difficult to make from a start coming out of an All-Star team. As far as the WNBA, the problem with the WNCAA is also the fundamental reason why the WNBA is not popular. The broken wncaa, that has five teams winning 70% of all championships and boring UConn etc., has failed to create college stars who are truly inspiring. That is why when they go into the pros they don't have a huge following. That's it. What I note does not mean that there are not many other factors, some of which you brought up, which may be at play. But in the end this is fundamental to All sports. Sports Fame comes from overcoming obstacles and people don't see All-Star team players is having to overcome enough. The easiest way to observe this is to look at the difference between when the 1960s Celtic's Monopoly on talent was broken by reforming the draft and creating a salary cap, after that eight teams won in the 70s and the NBA grew and then when a couple of transcendent stars came in Magic and Bird the league exploded and then Jordan and we know the rest. Conversely the NBA is now plateauing or even slightly declining primarily because there's no interest in young Stars, most people can't name more than one or two young stars and they talk about the old guys, because young stars are not developed in the Zeitgeist of the NCAA.
