Trick or Treat in DM was officially called "Tricks for Treats". Telling a joke was actually the least you could do. When we were small, my parents insisted that my brother and I do something better: we would typically sing a short song or do a magic trick: one involved me "mind reading" my brother to know how many candies had been put in his hand.

Joke: I live in Des Moines. Hahahahahahahahhahahahahha.

My father ALWAYS needed kids do something for haloween candy. Of course, that was in St Louis 65 years ago.

❤❤😅 I'm a fan I I grew up in Des Moines... your parents generation and I grew up you had to tell a joke but when my kids grew up they're older than you it wasn't so enforced I thought that was pretty bizarre... Of course when I grew up you could pretty much trust all your neighbors and it was just an exercise in public speaking.. and yeah they held the candy back until you told your joke

Ahhhh yes,,,,its GOOD living in IOWA !!! One of the few states left with good ol common sense!!!
