These tunes are pretty much all played in Cajun tuning (DGCF smallest to largest) which is one whole step down from standard tuning (EADG). Each string is called out by its standard tuning name.

Love the Cajun head swing, really does add to the sound. Only thing to add is the old Cajuns didn't just tap their toes they "tapped" their whole foot. I love that sound. Alot of the old Tex-German fiddlers did foot stomp also. My grand uncles played fiddle, they learned from their father. I remember when my großmutter died and all the kinfolks came to our house. My uncle Pete played so long he stomped about a foot square area in Daddy's prize carpet grass. I remember watching them play. They were tall men with huge fingers that never seemed to have trouble hitting the exact spot although they only used 3 fingers. The only trouble they had was sometimes at a party, towards the end of the night, everyone would be dancing and the song would go on and on and on. It wasn't until I was grown that I realized they had had a little to much "fun" and couldn't find the end of the song.

Haha! That had to have been a common problem in those house dance days as well.

I really think the foot stomping is being under utilized. That helps immensely

This is very strange. I am a Welshman (from Cardiff, Wales) and I play the fiddle. So I have this traditional Welsh tune, nice but quite simple, called 'Bardd Dinbych' ('The Poet of Denbigh') and I don't know how I should play it, and I'm sitting at home trying to figure it out when I get a call from a friend to tell me that there's a film showing at the local film club about cajun music ('First Cousins' by Moriah Istre). So I go along and watch the film, and I get one of those 'eureka' moments - 'That's it! That's how I should play it. Give it a bit of the cajun treatment. Suits it down to the ground.' So I go home and get to work. A GDGD tuning seemed to work best. Then I thought, 'What's the cajun bowing technique?' So, Google 'cajun bowing', and this is what comes up - Mitch with his Welsh Dragon T-shirt! Weird!

I love the foot stomp. Better than a standup bass for keeping the beat. I hope you have good wood floors in Maine, otherwise you might have to move back down South.

Hi, Mitch, thank you for this video! There isn't much on Cajun fiddling on youtube, so this gives a nice free intro. Do you have to tune down or can you play in standard tuning if you want?
@MitchReedMusicLessons
@MitchReedMusicLessons 4 года назад
I can play standard but I tune down because it compliments the Cajun feel. It's the traditional way to play and I'm all about traditions.

Really good tutorial Mitch! Thanks for your time and effort!! The tune down is to accommodate the accordion?
@MitchReedMusicLessons
@MitchReedMusicLessons 7 лет назад
Thanks for the feedback, 1cleandude! When we tune down we can play with accordion a lot easier. Although there are folks who don't tune down, that is not really a traditional Cajun style of fiddling.

Great stuff Mitch! I just learned a basic version of "Cajun Fiddle" from "Fiddlehed". You've given me some terrific ideas! Unless I missed it, you and he did not discuss slurring. How important is this?
@MitchReedMusicLessons
@MitchReedMusicLessons 7 лет назад
I love Fiddlehed's stuff. I call slurs roll-ups and they definitely have their place in Cajun music. Check out my post called Ornamentation at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7Xvin0btitg.html and let me know you have any questions about it.

You're right, Steve. In nearly all of my videos I'm tuned down one whole step from Standard tuning (EADG) to Cajun tuning (DGCF). Check out this link for more about that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VCWuuqUwckA.html. Thanks for the input!

Mitch, where would you say the shuffle bowing technique came from? I once had a blue grass fiddler ask me but I couldn't pin point it with a single fiddler. Leo Soileau? Doc Guidry? This guy told me he didn't think Dennis McGee was a Cajun fiddler at all because he didn't have that shuffle beat, but he was thinking about Doug Kershaw and Diggy Liggy Lo, Louisiana Man. I replied that if Dennis McGee isn't Cajun fiddling then nobody is! Ha!

Hey Rick! It is completely possible to learn on your own, but you will probably want at least some materials for guidance. If you are looking for private lessons, or just lesson videos, I offer a variety of options for picking up the fiddle! www.mitchreedmusiclessons.com Thanks! Smith

Hey, Justin! If you're looking for a violin, I'd suggest starting with your local luthier. I can recommend a couple, depending on what area you're in. They're your best bet to build a relationship with so that you're getting quality instruments and they'll be able to teach you how to take care of your investment.
