Presented by onX
In this episode of Cal’s Week in Review: In the Field, MeatEater’s Director of Conservation, Ryan Callaghan and Eric Siegfried of onX navigate around the crowds and into a hard to access piece of public land in Montana for a mule deer rifle hunt. Eric uses his E-scouting expertise alongside Cal’s river savvy to get to a spot that would be unknown and possibly forgotten without the public land data provided by onX-also a canoe, they’ll need a canoe.

@@Bigjohnson1515 About what? Meateater cussing more than usual in season 8 or the fact I don't watch TV except for hunting videos? I do the later because watching the filth on TV corrupts my character. If I watch all the episodes of hunting public for instance I get no filth such as sex, cussing, immorality, homosexuality etc. Just pure clean entertainment. I don't want to end up on the 6 o'clock news for no sins I committed by not keeping myself from bad influence. It works for me man. Before I was a Christian I was into gangs and getting deeper into drugs and gangbanging etc. Till a retired airforce high ranking soldier took me hunting. I left gangs after that first hunt. I gave the video a thumbs down for one simple reason, the hunting community has gone too far trying not to highlight the antlers or grip and grin. Now we have videos like this that don't even show the antlers in the video except on a small portion on the walk up. Yes its about the table fair, but its also about the trophy. Yes, I said it, trophy. As we all know it takes hard work to be successful and part of the that success is showcased in a wide smile with a respectful photo of the hunter and animal in the field. The same point can be had by showing the "trophy" shot and all the butchering and cooking. Taking the largest or most mature animal in the species is not arrogance, it's to show that you matched your wits against an animal that is a master of their environment and the game of hide and seek. After listening to countless hours of the the meateater crew, I know they can appreciate my point of view, well that is if someone even reads this comment.

Hunting, fishing and trapping. Trapping must worked out as evidenced by the mouse. Been there done that too. Skunked on an elk hunt returned to camp to find success in the mouse trap. It was my idea in the moment of frustration and I ended up getting posed with a beer in one hand, a case of said at my feet next to a cold fire, and the mouse on the end of a stick. nicholas Quintel on a couple posts above, Ryan confirms that he DID go back the next morning and found nothing. He also confirmed on the monitors with the video zoomed in that there was no hit. I thought that it was hit on the first shot, especially when it kicked. But I trust that Ryan did confirm a miss the next morning.

Revisiting this 3 years later.... Cal is still the stand-out preseter in the MeatEater outfit...and I still think that first "miss" was a bad hit. *that said, showing the ugly parts of this 'game'(misses/self-doubt, worry for the animal), is important and real. I thank MeatEater for keeping it real.

Oof. I am kind of confused... They had to boat into this spot which is surrounded on all 4 sides by private land. That is zero access... So who owns the private land? If it is completely cut off, no obvious timber... So who owns it? I will be looking very heavily into this.

Oh gods, one injured and one 'miss', "I just need more time with the gun". -No, you need to stop shooting at ranges that are beyond your skill. I liked Cal so much better than Steve, but now I'm just angry with this entire mess

Not sure about the first deer you missed, but the second could’ve been caused by your barrel resting on that tree/bush. If it were a 50 or 100 yard shot, it wouldn’t have mattered. But the shot looked pretty far, and resting the barrel on an object can cause a significant point of impact variation at distance.

A diligent search for hit marks, tracks is a fair duty of an ethical hunter. I had several occasions when observing buddies or guides claimed a miss on my shots. And then a proper search and tracking revealed in most cases a hit, not always ideal, but the animals were down within 300 meters max.

Resting your rifle barrel on a hard object to shot will make your shot fly high. Second attempt barrel on branch, you can see the branch move with the shot.

I wish they would talk a little more about there rifles and calibres. Was the rifle way out? was the deer to close? We also want to know more. i would guess he is using 300 win mag. But would like to know.

Question for western guys, are private owners generally receptive to asking whether you can just cut through their property to access public land?

I was very surprised to see Cal resting the barrel of his rifle on that dead brush when he shot at the second buck later on in the episode. Most shooters know that is a big No-No and can really throw your shot off. Your rifle should always be rested on the stock somewhere and never on the barrel especially with a floating barrel that I'm sure that rifle has.
