This is a brief tutorial to explain a bit about Biodiversity and how to use "Simpson's Index of Diversity" to compare the diversity of different sample areas.
I suggest pushing pause when each sample comes up and trying it yourself. Hopefully the practice helps.
If you are an IB Biology student, 'they' suggest using Simpson's Reciprocal Index, which is a little different than my demo which uses "Simpson's Index of Diversity". Check out this link if you want to see the what the difference is... www.countryside...
Basically, the reciprocal index will give you a number that you compare to the number of different species you have. The closer your value to the species number = higher diversity.
I don't like this because it makes it harder (extra steps needed) to compare different samples. Therefore I like the "Simpson's Index of Diversity" because you are always left with a value between 0 (low) and 1 (high diversity). To be more precise, you are left a probability that, if you select two individuals out of your sample at random, your number would reveal the chance (%) of picking two different species.
