Calculating NDVI using QGIS and Landsat 8 Images

In this tutorial, we explain everything you need to know to understand the concept of NDVI, which stands for Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, and see how we can compute NDVI by ourselves using freely available satellite data.
I’m going to walk you though this step-by step, all the way from understanding the meaning, and the concepts behind NDVI, to downloading the satellite that you need for this, and finally we are going to using a GIS tool like QGIS to do an actual computation of NDVI values and see how we can interpret our results.

Your tutorials are very neat and easy to understand and follow through. I am a marine biologist and new to GIS, remote sensing and spatial analysis. I see most of your videos are taking land-based examples into consideration, would it be possible for you to include a couple of examples that would show include marine/sea related examples such as showing healthy/unhealthy coral reef areas or seagrass meadows using suitable methods? If you want to calculate NDVI then pick sentinel 2 instead. It's also free but it got better spatial resolution (10 m) compared to landsat 8. Anyway, neat little video.

Similarly, if you're in the US, there's NAIP free 4 band imagery which is 1m I believe

Good Presentation. Learning a lot. How do you cater for non-vegetation land cover like built-up areas? From the NDVI layer that was produced and with the pseudocoloring given, it is easy to incorrectly interpret all light areas as unhealthy vegetation.

is there any need for atmospheric correction before calculation NDVI in QGIS? Landsat level-1 is not atmospherically corrected data?

I appreciate this information. In other videos you began first by applying radiometric corrections and calculating surface reflectance. Is it necessary to do these preprocessings before calculating the NDVI? Thank you.

Thank you the entire GEODELTA team, pls I do I use vertices to join points. I don't mean points to line. Points to line will only join for example A to B or C to D. but incase of vertices is connecting more than one points. E.g. A is connecting D and E in case of geodetic network. Using arcgis Thanks

sure, check out "zonal statistics". you can type it in the little search box in the corner down left. Then a dialog will come up asking you what raster you wanna calculate statistics from. And if you want to calculate the statistics of a particular area, you have to draw a polygon of that area beforehand

You can just create one by yourself using the 'add polygon' tool of Google Earth Pro

you used (5 -4)/(5+4), why? I thought it should be (4-3)/ (4+3) for the NDVI value

Your formula is true for the Landsat 7 bands. However, for the Landsat 8, they have an additional band as number 1. So band 4 in Landsat 7 is like band 5 in Landsat 8.
