making my own meal is cheaper ... as long as my time is not worth substantially more than minimum wage, and my overheads reasonable ... what happened to economies of scale? food miles vs personal transport cost... ?

Older adults on fixed incomes cannot afford not waste money on special celebrations they cannot afford, and most places have free Public Firework Displays. Consider the fact that animals are terrified by loud noises and flashing light, besides the wildfire risk. I prefer vegetarian meals, no no hamburgers, thank you! Many firework accidents can cause blindness and/or burns, so the Public displays reduce risk as well as expense.
