this is correct but it is not the end of the story. while Wikipedia describes them as being transported from point A to point B in cages this is not necessarily correct. while the pigeon was familiar with point A being it's home it was not familiar with point B and did not know how to get there. Do not confuse homing abilities with having a GPS. in order for the pigeon to become familiar with the route it was supposed to take to get to point B a man on a horse would actually tie a string to the pigeon's leg/foot and hold it as one holds a helium balloon. the pigeon would fly alongside the man on the horse from point A to point B so that it would know where the hell it was supposed to go and how it was supposed to get there. once at point B the pigeon would be given a message and sent back to point A which it naturally recognized as it's home. After a few of these rides/flights to point B the pigeon began to become familiar with Point B as well and began recognizing it as a second home. little coups/houses would be built for the pigeons to eat and rest in at these different points. now the pigeon recognizes these two points as home and can carry the messages to and fro on its own. Homing pigeons were also used in wars to get messages to different infantries. they played an important role in world war 1 and world war 2 as military messengers. they stopped being used in the war around the 1960s or close to there. some even presented the Dickin medal for there bravery and help in the battlefield. the pigeons were able to save many lives by delivering these messages in a quick and efficient manner. unfortunately, most people tend to view pigeons in an unfavorable way, calling them "rats with wings" or something akin to that. but before pigeons were scavengers they were pets that we selectively bred and domesticated. they make excellent pets and there are a wide variety of pigeon species. I also want to point out that there is no difference between pigeons and doves according to scientific nomenclature. doves are pigeons and pigeons are doves. Both dove and pigeon refer to the 308 species of birds from the Columbidae family. yet people tend to look upon "doves" more favorably which just doesn't make sense.
