Apologies guys the drone footage for this video didn’t save for some reason
It’s the final days of September and this means it’s time to get the slurry out before the ban kicks in. The question I do wonder does calendar farming really work in Ireland ?

Great video Alan, unfortunately in regard to calendar farming our thoughts will never be listened to. Apparently we’re not educated enough to make any decisions anymore. We’re just seen as common labourers now under strict instruction

Im farming also & i do agree with some of what you say. But the issue isnt about ground conditions being dry or not, its about the growth if grass to use up the nutrients that is spread in the slurry. If the grass is growing, the nutrients will be used up bt the grass plant & there will be no issue. If grass isnt grrowing, the nutrients are just sitting on the ground & can be lost, leeched etc. Grass wouldnt be growing stong enough from now on for the rest of the year.

@@farmerdan1979 I agree. The point I was making was whether it was Monday or Tuesday this week it will bear the same results.

@@dronedairys7461 I agree with that point too but I suppose there has to be a stop date & thats where we are at. Even if it was for another 2 weeks, we are going to have to stop on some Monday or Tuesday. Its like calving, we all pick a stop date, end of april or whatever. We stop Ai or bull out the bull on a certain date. As i said, im not disagreeing with you, we are all in the same boat but we will not be able to farm like we did years ago.

@@farmerdan1979 calving is our own choice of date. I am only saying that conmen sense is the best policy. Not calendar based decisions

@@dronedairys7461 Well agree to disagree so. Grass doesnt grow enough over winter to use the slurry if spread, the winter is on the calender the same time every year. Why dont you throw out a couple of tonne of urea now so, would that be common sense & suit the calender? We would all be better if we had enough storage for the slurry over winter & use it next spring / summer in the right conditions where it would give a good result rather than just dumping it.

I do agree with everything you're saying about calendar etc. I'm just wondering from a non farmer what is the advantage of spreading in Nov or Dec when grass doesnt grow. The slurry that is in the tank in Sept - can that not be spread in June July August. Im genuinely interested to know why do farmers want to wait and spread a bit in Nov or whatever. thanks for the video and keep up great work

The potash and phosphorus element of slurry rises the natural soil fertility even during the winter months, the reason farmers want to spread in Nov & Dec is to reduce the amount of slurry they have to store and spread the following year, that in turn reduces workload and storage required,
