Thanks to Joe N Tell and Techno Dad, I got my hands on their revolutionary Spatial Audio Calibration Toolkit Blu-ray disc. I started from scratch, resetting my preamp to factory default and went to town, calibrating my home theater manually. Lemme tell ya - I'm now a firm believer that ANYONE should have this as part of their toolkit to calibrate their home theater to the next level. Check out my review and see how well it helped my testing theater!

Totally agree with you on the value of the Toolkit. I use a yamaha 2080 with a 5.2.4 system and I had YPAO settings dialed in for years. I tried using the Toolkit and keeping YPAO settings instead of starting from scratch and it seemed to work better for me.I found the distance/delay setting for YPAO was spot on effective compared to my digital measuring device. The biggest change came with level matching since the Toolkit and a Radio Shack sound pressure meter destroyed the YPAO settings which were pretty off. Same with Toolkit crossover settings, Everything else kind of fell into place but my system now sounds like I just bought a new receiver.

Great video, I see a lot of people commenting on measuring their distances, the distance in the AVR takes into account any processing, it was worst thing they ever did by calling it a distance as its so much more. I find that you still need the system calibration to manange the frequencies but by using all the tools combined you can get an amazing result.

I have fixed in wall speakers. I can’t physically move them for many of these tests. I feel I can do most of these features thru the Audessy in the Denon. I think this disc is more advantageous for those that can move their speakers around
@ealanosborne
@ealanosborne 9 месяцев назад
Silly me, I may have misspoke when it comes to the “distance” setting. There’s a difference between “physical distance” and “acoustic distance.” Within every AVR, you can make adjustments to the “distance” feature which ultimately adjusts the delay on any speaker so that audio from all your speakers reaches your main listening position at the same time. It allows for those even with fixed speaker positions to still be able to make adjustments, since AVR manufacturers know not everyone has the luxury of moving a speaker’s physical position. So this calibration disc lets you make adjustments to the “acoustic distance” by playing those ping pong sounds between 2 speakers to better align them with the main listening position. So you make slight “distance” adjustments in the AVR - adding a little or a lot of delay - which ultimately lines up the audio from 2 speakers more precisely with your listening position. I hope that clears things up! 😁🎉

Do you have svs prime elevations that are wall mounted as front/rear heights and angled down but essentially facing the opposite wall? I’m in the process of buying those myself and plan to mount in that exact 1 for all layout (incl auro) but have been struggling with how to mount them. Svs says to mount flat to the wall bc of their wide dispersion. But my room/seating area is wider than deep so worried about off axis response which I think you were getting at. I don’t have a simple ceiling or side walls as alternative locations. Please do share what your plans are for angling the speakers. I’ve been trying to look for articulating speaker mounts so I can swivel them. But I’m admittedly a novice so would love to hear if you or anyone else can recommend mounts like this that are strong and lowish profile since their shape makes them somewhat bulkier than standard satellites.

Valid question, but Dirac doesn’t get it right all the time. You can use the disc to verify if Dirac did everything correctly, but really made for a full manual calibration. Dirac also makes it hard to change any settings once it has completed its calibration, honestly. 👍

@@ealanosborne good points!. I remember running a calibration DVD back when I setup my 5.1 system (no Dirac Live back then) along with a Radio Shack SPL meter, and it did work well. @ealanosborne
@ealanosborne Год назад
Yeah, I have my heights mounted at 30 degrees up from my MLP, according to Auro3D specs.
@JonMoralesLA
@JonMoralesLA Год назад
Yep that 45-55 is only for Dolby Atmos recommended specs. Atmos also has the 30 degrees speaker placement in their spec as well. Auro 3D speaker placement is different. It involves a minimum 5.1.4 setup with height speakers placed 30 degrees directly above the ear level speakers as measured from the main listening position (MLP). In an Auro setup it is recommended the height speakers are pointed at standing height above the MLP and not directly at the MLP. Also very important with Auro speaker configuration…the height speakers are not supposed to be closer to the MLP than the ear level speaker below it. That’s why the Atmos setup of having the top/height speakers be closer to the MLP because of how they are above is not ideal for an Auro 3D speaker configuration.
@tom6363
@tom6363 Год назад
@@JonMoralesLA My Denon AVR supports Auro 3D but because I have placed my in ceiling speakers per the Dolby spec (really the Home Theater Guru's recommendation) I have not been able to play or even test how it sounds. When I select Auro 3D I don't get any sound out out of my height speakers. I have heard that I have to go into set-up and make some speaker layout changes if I want to hear Auro 3D which from what I have read will not sound good with an Atmos layout. 😂
@JonMoralesLA
@JonMoralesLA Год назад
@@tom6363 What Denon do you have? If it’s a fairly recent model, when you choose certain height/top speaker layouts it will show you at the bottom which formats are supported such as Dolby Atmos or Auro 3D, or both. You have to be sure to choose a speaker layout that is supported for Auro 3D to pop up as an option. Then you can use Auro 3D. The new Denon Receivers such as the 3800, 4800 etc, there is a firmware update that was just released that allows for Auro 3D to work with any height / top speaker selection. So you can choose front heights, top front, etc and Auro will still work. Also unlike Dolby Atmos, I believe Auro 3D will only be shown as available if you have 4 height channels and not just two. The downside of Denon allowing this feature is that people can now run Auro 3D on speaker setups that aren’t recommended. Like using a top middle speaker for Auro, that would mean a speaker likely closer to MLP than the front ear level speaker. That’s going to screw with what Auromatic upmixer is doing in the background and is not ideal. It will have a negative effect on how it sounds.
@JonMoralesLA
@JonMoralesLA Год назад
@@tom6363 And one more thing, I A/B tested the Dolby Atmos demo disc listening in Auro 3D and Atmos back to back. My speakers are in proper 5.1.4 Auro 3D configuration (well as close as I can get as my heights are at about 25 degrees above ear level as that’s as high as my wife will allow given her bookshelf furniture). To me Auro 3D bested Atmos in every demo reel on that disc. Objects seemed to be more clearly positioned as they moved about in Auro 3D. I was really quite surprised. Now maybe Atmos would have faired better if I configured my speakers in Atmos recommended setup. 🤷🏾‍♂️ I think Auro layout is just very effective at giving your ears the sense of height and space above. I know that Atmos also sounds great with my speakers in Auro 3D format. I’m still very much able to use and enjoy both formats.

@MyFatherLoves
@MyFatherLoves Год назад
I think you misunderstand the point of the timing test... There are set angles given by Dolby for Atmos positioning that allow you to have as close as possible to the same setup as the post-production studio mixed the movie in, spatially. The timing test is meant to make sure you have the delays set properly in your DSP, not to guide you to reposition your speakers. In fact, if you have the room, it's best to get every speaker in your room away from the walls and ceiling. Granted, we work with what we have and generally don't have giant production studios with truss holding every speaker at the perfect angle and away from the walls and ceilings. And this is not a subjective opinion. This is how Dolby certified install crews come in to install professional post-production studios. Obviously, myself and most home theater nerds have to install ear level surround and atmos speakers pushed against the wall or mounted on wall/ceiling. Even with budget speakers, getting your front stage away from the front wall and side walls will tremendously help the imaging in your system both with movies and music. I'm not trying to be the voice of dissent in a time where everyone seems to be fighting and arguing. I just wanted to step in and shine a little light of truth into the situation.
@ealanosborne
@ealanosborne Год назад
Thanks, man! I appreciate your insight! 🤘
@JonMoralesLA
@JonMoralesLA Год назад
This 👍🏾. Speaker distance setting in your receiver is actually adjusting the timing. This is why subwoofer distances can be detected by receivers as being really far away. It’s not that the subwoofer is physically far away but rather that many subs have internal processing going on that causes a delay. So that extra 10 ft on your subwoofer distance setting is actually accounting for the time delay. When all speakers time delays / distance settings are properly set, the sound from all your speakers is arriving at the MLP at exactly the same time. The clarity of sound is dramatically improved when done properly.
@t-rex1480
@t-rex1480 Год назад
Adjusting the distance for time alignment is part of it as well as trim levels. If your front left and left surround are playing but it mainly sounds like the surround left, it is likely too loud or the front left is not loud enough. Room acoustics can play a role as well of course. I agree, speakers do not need to move if they were setup properly to begin with.

Surely you set the distances, not move the speakers around.

This is total nonsense. SMH, funny to see which HT channels are selling their souls for an overpriced home made test disc.

It's $99, but I hear you. I'm curious to see what the Spears and Munsil disc has to offer for Atmos also. They've made great calibration discs for video for a long time. I doubt they will have as many test tracks as ours does mainly because ours is dedicated to audio only.

@@keithksenopoulos295 We authored our "homemade" test disc the way everyone else does. It's relatively costly by the way. Spears & Munsil are the two creators of their test disc. Channa and I are the creators of this one. Is the Spears & Munsil one also homemade?

Honestly, you’d think otherwise if you personally spent 6 months solid developing, testing, and authoring any creation in general. Plus, Dolby deliberately makes it extremely expensive and difficult to master anything in Dolby True HD/Atmos. Like any business venture, you want to make a profit, so $99 isn’t bad at all, considering the amount of time and actual dollars spent to even make this disc a reality.

@@ealanosborne Yes, this is all true. I would love to make a more affordable product for people who just need some of the basic sections. We'll see. Stay tuned!
