California “Progressives” vs. New Affordable Housing Project | Ben Meets America

This week, Ben goes to his local city council meeting in West Hollywood, as the community weighs in on a new affordable housing development being proposed in their neighborhood. Nearly to a person, the NIMBYs in attendance insisted they are ardent supporters of affordable housing. Just “not at the expense,” as one man advised, “of the quality of the people living in the neighborhood.”
“Ben Meets America!” chronicles one journalist’s attempt to understand the American electorate. It’s a political series for the politically homeless-and an antidote to the idea that we live in a hyper-polarized society destined to hate one another.

It's too bad those "affordable housing" units won't have affordable rents. Rents will be based on average median income level of approx $70,000 a year. Those units will cost $1800+ for a studio--still unaffordable for most of those workers who came to that meeting. This type of development is a boon for developers who will charge market price units for 90% of these units, not build enough parking, and a project like this will negatively impact the entire WeHo community.

Affordable housing is not necessary in the most expensive areas of the country. Build affordable housing in places where it’s less expensive and in line with the needs of the people it is supposed to serve. Build public transportation not housing middle class tax payers can’t afford. There are couples with two college degrees and a six figure salary that can’t afford to live in this community but they are going to build housing for low income people to live here. What is wrong with this picture? CA is losing population so let’s drive out more people with such policies.

@@ediem4222 you're not understanding what I'm saying. West Hollywood and Los Angeles county as a whole is unaffordable to many not because people don't make enough money, but theres not enough housing available. If 10,000 people are looking to rent and theres only 3000 housing units, the 3000 people willing and able to pay the most will get the units. Giving the 10,000 people all pay raises isn't going to solve this equation because the number of housing units remains unchanged. How you solve this equation is you build more.

@@bubba6989 Well maybe we need to slow down immigration. 33% of the Los Angeles is foreign born. If we don't have enough housing for Citizens... why are we inviting non citizens to move here? Also, why do we allow global billionaires, from places like China, Iran and Korea, to buy up single family homes, offering cash, far over asking, pushing out citizens who want to buy a starter home. Then the citizens are forced to rent from foreign billionaires who aren't citizens, nor do they live or work in Los Angeles. It's just a way for them to park their money. Also one giant problem is they don't do anything about the drug addicts, criminals, and the alcoholics . They give him the section 8 then they they get to spend a tiny amount on rent and a huge amount on drugs and alcohol ...they don't do anything to force them to get straight. I lived in one of those buildings for 1 year & in one year, there was 11 fires caused by heroin addicts and alcoholics and criminals and they were all bringing in women and having prostitution and illegally breathing little poor dogs and it was just disgusting I thought I wanted to die.

Its sad that everyone here thinks they know everything about this situation from a 4 minute clip. Do any of you know that in the last 5 years CA has spent $17.5 billion on homelessness and all they have to show for it is 50,000 more homeless? They spent $3.5 billion renovating 29 hotel and commercisl poperties for low income housing like this one and in less than 2 years all 29 had to be evacuated due to drugs and crime. Karen Bass (LA mayor) spent $67 million to house homeless. All of that money is gone in less than 2 years and she has housed 400 out of 46,000 homeless. A federal judge last month had to order the state of CA to audit the $17.5 billion bc they didnt track how it was spent. The people running the programs and spending the money like Newsom, Gascon, Bass, Pamela Price, are crooks and hell Pelosi's district in SF has already broken the record for piles o human feces they had last year this month. They avg of 10k piles of sh*t per month in SF. Unfortunately The biased free press has an agenda that is most likely backed by Newsom or some of the others. There are current recalls in place for Newsom, Price, Tang, and a few others in the SoCal area. No one is happy unless your in Newsom's back pocket. During lockdown while everyone was stuck at home Newsom celebrated the bday of his favorite lobbyist with a 10 course tasting meal at $350/person at The French Laundry. He is the most evil classless man in politics. Gavin 'the butcher' Newsom. CA as also lost 11 fortune 1000 companies, 356 coporate HQ's, and 1 million+ residents but the homeless flood in bc the can do Fentanyl in public and not go to jail after bail reform finished destroying the rest of the soul of SoCal.

I am sorry but I dont know what to think of Ben Katterwalling. The issue has been festering and growing for 30+ years, and has come to a head or close. Homelessness is, in my estimate, a personal decision that folks have control over. Sure there are a few exceptions, buy you manage the exceptions. Drug addiction, mental illness (from drug addiction), are the leading causes of homelessness. The folks who want help have plenty of resources to get help. Those who want to continue down the path of self destruction, make that choice themselves, for the most part. Some are assisted by drug dependency and alcohol abuse etc. It is a viscous circle. Planting a homeless village in the middle of a somewhat functioning town (I use that loosely for West hollywood), makes no sense, NIMBY or not. Civilized people need to be around other civilized people. WE must require those who want help, to take the help we offer, or they dont get any privileges of a functioning society. Sorry, hardballs hurt when you are hit with a fast pitch.
