This war ruined the joy of my childhood. We lost three boys on our block to this war. At 16 we had to register for the draft and take the physical and mental tests. At 18 you could be drafted. It was like Russian roulette, you never knew when your draft number would be called.
I remember watching TV and the it wasn't a lottery for money it was a lottery for the draft. It men't if your number came up off you were going to Viet Nam.
I was 14 in 1967 and listened to the radio my father had on every morning before he went to work and I went to school. What I heard in those days ways the number of American war dead. Those early morning broadcasts' are a memory of my childhood I will never forget.
My cousin served in WWII and Korea as a fighter pilot. He had a desk job at the Pentagon in 1968 and volunteered for active duty. January 1969 he was shot down. MIA for 2 years and the POW for 5 total years. He was a man’s man and loved his Country. God Bless all veterans and may our country bless all our Vietnam Nam veterans.
I was with the 11th ACR in 69 with the 919th working as a combat engineer.... the same outfit as your dad was in. Our first mission after we arrived in country was clearing mines from the road between Blackhorse and Xuan Loc. A few months later they moved us up next to the Cambodian border near An Loc where I was shot. I'm sure your dad appreciated your respect. One thing most people who haven't experienced combat is the deep love you discover and experience for the men you're fighting beside. Wish I'd known your dad.
I've been disabled retired from the Vietnam War since 1969. Sent home critically wounded in 1968. I get around on crutches at age 79. I hate wars that are not called for as was Vietnam. But the Ukrainians need to be helped in their legitimate fight for freedom and democracy. I pray the Republican freedom haters will get off their lazy and undemocratic asses and help the Ukrainian people against Russia's monster Putin, the dictator who hates freedom seekers.
As a kid growing up in the ‘60’s & ‘70’s the Viet Nam War was on the tV news every night. “The Living Room War”. We lived in Champaign, IL, a college town. My Dad worked there. I remember the student protests, violent demonstrations burning campus town. I get really emotional for our men & women Viet Nam vets. The tail gunner tale “We came in low & hot, tail toward the trees” gets me, really gets me. I just saw a tribute to a local Viet Nam hero in Peoria, IL w/ pictures & quotes in the display @ The Riverfront Museum. Powerful words like, “Dump everything you’ve got & kill them all.” What as a commander of a platoon under siege he was calling in for air fire on the enemy so they could pull out of an ambush in the jungle. PTSD is real. I see it in my son in law while served in the Army 2008-10 in Iraq & Afghanistan. As the Viet Nam & Desert Wars vets age their psychological & physical needs amplify yet Congress cuts their medical funding. You better believe I’ll be voting those jerks out of office in my state. I’m there for each & every man & woman that has served our country, anywhere, anytime, I’ve got your six. Mary Z. Walker Member N.S.D.A.R.🇺🇸

My grandfather served in the Vietnam war in Combative Logistics and field supplies. He fought in multiple battles throughout both North and Southern Vietnam. He got injured from shrapnel due to a Vietnamese attack in 1973- he was brought back to the US and retired in his hometown Sheboygan Wisconsin.
Combative Logistics and field supplies?WTF? He fought in multiple battles through out both North and Southern Vietnam? Really? WTF are you taking for drugs? I did RVN '66-'67, E/2/1, USMC, I was not in the rear with all the gear, but, I did not see shit, did not do shit, and neither did a lot of others, methinks you are either deluded or full crap. I enjoyed the countryside from the Rockpile to Anhoa.
In Viet Nam I saw way to much killings 24 hours day and night, bombs, mine fields, the rain, the heat of the jungle, this was over 50 years ago, I am still a mess us kids at age 20 killing in Nam was a f.. nightmare. We came back to our country, who treated us like shit .For those of us who made it back to the USA, we were hated, for doing a war job we were forced to do.
My Dad was a combat engineer in Xuan Loc 1971-1972. Some of his team mates were wounded or killed. But he said he was grateful in that his group had a clear mission and knew who and where the enemy were. He said once we knew that we were successful. Unfortunately for the U.S., it was not always clear who and where the enemy was.
Cassidy my dad did 3 tours in Vietnam as a combat engineer. He was never the same and died at 58 yo from horrible cancer. I was really proud of him. Thanks to your dad for his service. ❤🙌
thank you to your father for his service. There is, unfortunately, no greater calling than for citizens to go to war. Vietnam veterans have one of the most unique positions in history with a country that never supported them. The respect I have for your father and my Uncle Joe is immense. Even when it wasn't freedom, we remain safe. I will always have respect for that
I joined the Marines just out of high school in 1968 and left a week later for Parris Island. I was trained and served for three years as a COBOL computer programmer of all things. After attending the Marines "Computer Science School" at Quantico, VA I got stationed at MCAS El Toro, CA and spent most of 1969 in southern California. "California Dreamin' always bring back memories of my times as a Pennsylvania kid on the beaches (mostly Laguna Beach) of southern California with the original Hippie culture. That being said, most of the "Hippies" wanted nothing to do with anyone who was a Marine because we were part of the "establishment" as they saw it.
I spent my tour of duty running convoys in a M543 wrecker from Saigon to chu chi , Tay NIngh, Plieku and Long Bingh. I also worked at the ammo dump at the 25 infantry division unloading ammunition and rockets from convoys when I was not on the road. At night I was sent to the where the Huey's airstrip was and pulled rotors, transmissions and turbines. I was sent out into the field and pulled power packs on motorized 155 cannons and any other type of vehicles that had engine problems. I was shot at by snippers and mortared whenever I had to spent the night out in the field on the road or in a rice patty. I had a U S serial number and was used like a red headed step child out of the five in our section. It was a very intense year for me because everyday I was on the go.
@@creeper326. Thank You .We had two days to clear post and after I turned in my M16 ,Helmet, gas mask and anything that was issued to us when we reported to our duty station 4 APCS were hit that night outside of base camp and I was asked if I wanted to go out and retrieve them. They knew my orders had come in so I said no and I was expecting a problem but nothing came of it. My whole company had been called out to guard the bunker line and I didn't have a weapon if we were overrun. It was kind of scary since I had spent a whole year over there and I was coming home after my tour of duty.
You might be wondering why some songs start to play in The Middle of a movie. It is because many of these songs were popular during some of these war movies and other movies as well. Or just light by the patrons doing that time. Period.
What a video. Bringing back the confused state of my mind as a young man. Torn between patriotism and fear of the unknown. I was drafted and failed the physical, and still had torn feelings. What did I miss? All these years later I still feel like I didn't do my part. Beautiful song though. A time when the U.S. was almost, *ALMOST* as messed up as it is now.
I served in 1969 at the age of 20, with the army and got severely wounded, spending 8 months in hospitals and had multiple surgeries. Don't be too hard on yourself. It's not like you were a coward who didn't fight for his country. Failing a physical isn't your fault. Many of us guys who served in 'Nam wish we hadn't passed the physical.
@@postalinVT I'm still kicking at 75. I was born two months premature, and I'm in no hurry to leave. Got wounded in 'Nam at age 20, rolled over my car at age 22, lived through a horrific car accident when I was 5 years-old, and have suffered multiple concussions. Nothing has stopped me yet.

Your so-called "freedom" was granted by the French and Americans and can be taken away. Thank the heaven that the Vietnamese achieved true freedom through unification.
The freedom is the more valuable thing that god creator gave to the human individual beings, not totalitarian Marxist-Leninist Stalinist Maoist states and societies of slaves and indoctrinated individuals like you and your people, with not dissent and opportunities to grow, mature and think by themselves and not by orders or discipline, only follow orders, of course many economic, societal, historical, civilizational, cultural core things explained the defeat of Americans in Vietnam War or the French in Indochina war, not legitimizing the colonial European or neocolonialist American rule, intervention, exploitation and wars and control in Vietnam but objectively, the communism and ultra-nationalism are also stupid and poor ideas, the far left and the far right are the same in many things, and they bring to the world only wars, destruction, lack of freedom, separation of civil rights of people from the state, I know that in the colonial French era or in the capitalist republican south Vietnamese era like in the north Vietnamese communist era and unified Vietnamese era those things never existed, not only Ho Chi Minh or Giap were hard rulers but also Thieu, Diem, van Minh, but for me communists like capitalists and Nazis and fascists are all the same, the world is not differentiated in cosmic level by races, nations, money, ideology or power but in low reality plan the human beings are only imperfect beings controlled and guided by secret agendas, culture, traditions, wrong conceptions, powerful local, regional, national, global elites, leadership, ambitions, cruelty, hate, of course western world and western civilization is so , so much different from old eastern Asian civilization, their history, their own tales, traditions, conceptual, philosophical, societal, moral core values, scientific achievements, economic achievements, developments are not the same because as all things in human history and humankind were are all humans of one, united specie, but we are all different, different people with different hopes, ambitions, geographies, troubles, languages, tongues, religions, different struggles and because that always we will have misunderstandings, clashes, confrontations, fights, because we can not agree in anything, the western colonization and aggression wars in Vietnam were morally bad but also not all people in Vietnam wanted to be reunified and controlled by communist pro-chinese and pro-russian, Vietnam changed one master for other and even if you wanted a total sovereignty, that was only a mirror and a utopia, ideal in a world where all societies, peoples and nations are connected, integrated by inevitable economical, historical, political, cultural connections, ties, strongly ties and non-dissolute bonds, Marx and Engels knew those things and for them the western civilization was by far superior to those old precedent civilizations like those of Asia, only when the Asians used the western great achievements, developments, ideals, innovations by themselves they began to surpass and to change the tide of history in power conception level and begun to rule again the world, a Spanish writer said in precedent old centuries that the sun emerges on east and sleeps, falls, lows on west and the history is always a circle and the tide of historical civilizational state of power had changed, if the precedent 5 or 6 centuries were the centuries of Europeans in global affairs now is in the 21st century after Christ is the time of Asia, specially China, India, the Muslim civilized area of world, the 2 Korea , Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, who knows, the great napoleon said once time ago that when chine will awake the world will tremor, of course china and Vietnam were old enemies by historical accounts of the past in antiquity and medieval era Chinese wars of conquest and imperialism and in recent decades, by the brief war between Vietnam and china for the Cambodia and red Khmer question but their bonds, mutual interests, goals, common heritage, common aspirations are by far more important in different of human matters, for good or for bad condemned to be one with other, i m not legitimizing the war from 1960 until 1975, the end was predictable, clear from the beginning, the was majority of the peasantry and poor people of Vietnam wanted from postwar of 1945, not only independence and sovereignty from western colonial powers and Japanese imperialism but also a new societal, economic, political, economic societal order, a socialist order guided by the communist party of Vietnam and leaders like min and Giap and others, the wanted the traditional Vietnamese upper societal , economic traditional elites from previous eras like the monarchy out of the country and wanted like others in Asia and third world development, cultural, economical, political improvement, development, better conditions of health, life, work, living for the people, their people, the productive classes, the workers, the peasantry in a rural country but is wrong to say that all population of Vietnam and specially south Vietnam wanted that class of regime and order, many of them your relatives, that's the issue of the civil war, the Vietnam War was not a simple colonial war or neocolonialist war, it was also a civil war between right, pro-capitalist and pro-democracy Vietnamese people and left, independence leftist nationalists, socialists progressives, pro-communist, ultra-nationalist, socialist people from different currents, also it was a confrontation between global powers or between the global south and the global north, the regime that triumph in April 1975 was not a simple kind regime like any on the world stage and also needed the global sponsorship of other class of dominant, hegemonic Asian and European powers, nations, respect for all people who died in unfortunate circumstances, killed by this, those, that or that people, all are the same and by a paradox of life and history, communist surviving regimes like china or Vietnam are today strongly capitalist and with their own social, economic internal contradictions and internal repressions and exploitation because even with all your indoctrinated national propaganda, the same for Americans or for the conservative capitalist Vietnamese adversaries of your group in those ages, besides that you regime and state are nor perfect and not exactly what those magnificent promises, Utopia ideals send millions of your people to fight against a more industrial, powerful adversary, you won, yes but at a great cost and only because that adversary only at the end understood the futility to try to bring to people of a totally different society in cultural, civilization terms the advantages and ideals of freedom, democracy, individuality, personal responsibility, pluralism, things that are totally different to the historical perspective of civilization area of Buddhist -Confucian-Taoist nations like yours, nations who had other experiences of life, traditions and ideals and nations who wanted not the freedom of their citizens or people like individuals but the freedom of their territory and collective conservative, isolationist, traditional society and historical nation, that war was inevitable from the moment when the French conquered Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia in 19th century, and it was a stupidity and also a business of American leadership.@@angkhoanguyen6114
To the soldiers and airmen who served here. Thank you for defending yourself and those around you. The reasons, who's and why's you were there are irrelevant, now. To those who perished defending themselves and others. Thank you for your service. This video and others like it will assure you are remembered....
@@folio880 Relax and read the comment. gb3450 commented by saying 'defending themselves and others' meaning their service mates, their buddies who they were fighting with. The reason why they were there is irrelevant. A frontline soldier is defending themselves and their buddies during battles, not king and country. Now get those knickers of yours out of the twist.
I know what you mean, but i think the reasons why they were there are a loot moore important. They sent kids to die in a jungle they didn't even know was there before all for nothing. Something that should not happen again.
In my first job my boss was Marine brass in Vietnam, the stories I heard and pictures he showed me, you will not learn in any college history class about Vietnam. And we watched MASH in every lunch break.
My grandpa was a vietnamese type 59 tank gunner in the early 1970s. He said that he and his team can die at anytime, so why not spend your last years of your life fighting for your country, doing everything you could for our felow south Vietnamese brothers and future generations. He said that his platoon was nearly destroyed by napalm bombs, but still not afraid to fight back, even though his tank was the last one standing. At that time, my grandma told me that when she was at her hometown rice field with her brothers and sisters, she felt thirsty and went on a break. Thats when she saw 2 fighter jets ( i bilieve f4s) streak past her, dropping their bombs. All her siblings died and and even more terrifiying, she watched her brother fly up into the sky because of the explosion. Also when the fighters flew through, she saw the american pilots face.If she wouldn't have taken that water break, then i have no clue if i am existing today. WAR IS HELL,i respect all soldiers, they dont want to go to war either, but if their country calls, their just doing what they are told.😥

I'm French, we fought each other also. All of this is so terrible, a terrible waste of lives. So many young people dying on both side, Vietnamese, French, American, Australian etc ... This is really sad. Now, it seems like this was so far from us, but we have to remember all these people who fought for their own cause, or for their duty. Yes, "War is Hell" said Sherman, an American general... I would never have the misfortune of knowing what it really is.
I remember sitting at the kitchen table watching the evening news, I was 6 or 7 and the daily kill count came out on the news. My Mom always cried. I felt the same way watching the gulf war, Iraq war and the mess in Afghanistan.
The gulf war was different and so was Afghanistan. We cleaned house in those wars . I mean, we treated Iraq like they were a bunch of amateurs, same with afghanis

Maybe a dumb question but in Vietnam and later wars the west often sets up camp, the patrols the dangerous neighbourhood with only a small squad and (what appears to be) late fire from the air, only to leave after many died whilst the enemy reclaims the territory, only to do it again the next day or week. Why? The person or vehicle in front almost always gets killed, they get pinned down, a few more die and that same night the enemy owns that field again. I hope i don't offend anyone, since im clearly no expert and wondered this for a while
I will never ever understand why Vietnam veterans were treated so shamefully,it was the same for Australian and new zealand returned service men and women..these people served there countries, they were called up and trained and so many were sent to south Vietnam, they were not given a choice, you had to report for duty,it wasn't optional,it's really shamefull when you think about all the emotional stress that these men and women had to endure and carry with then, all the female nursing staff and the many lives that they had to try and save, each and everyday and the emotional stress that would always stay with them.this was before my time, however I've always had the greatest admiration and respect for all the men and women who served during the Vietnam war, they served their country and did the very best that they could..you had people who never went or served, that new nothing about what was going on during the Vietnam war,and these very same people were those who spat on and threw red paint on those who returned home, and society in general just didn't want to know them..and I always thought how disrespectfull and shamefull this behaviour truly was towards any returning Vietnam veteran male or female..I just wanted to give you all as much love and respect as possible and to say thankyou for your bravery, courage, and outstanding service..thankyou❤.
God bless all the troops who serve or have served to keep America free, however the Vietnam era was y childhood.
