A high school in California is making students give up their cellphones during the day by having them deposit the devices in a specially sealed pouch. This, the school says, is being done to combat distractions and increase learning. Some students, however, are finding the separation from their phone difficult. Deana Mitchell explores.

The schools around here let the kids use their phones and have incorporated them into projects. A smartphone is a powerful tool and kids should be taught all of it's potential.

That student has it backwards, this media obsessed youth culture isn’t using phones to help beat teen angst. Studies show, screen addiction is a major cause of insomnia, depression and a leading factor in the increase in both teen bullying and suicide. It’s important to note, the rise in school shooting follows the same trend. For a generation born into a world so dependent on tech, it’s a lofty goal to think they will understand what an 80s kid like me, means by this statement. The culture we’ve created have actually robbed them of childhood, now that I think about it more. The saddest part is they don’t know what they are missing. The freedom to make mistakes without the fear of being judged by everyone for perpetuity was the best thing about being a kid. Without that freedom, childhood & adolescent today aren’t exactly “the wonder years.” Ok boomer!

Okay but also some people need their phones for emergencies, contacting family, family contacting them, and just in general using their phones to connect with friends. People just don’t seem to get it because of the vast differences between generations because of the sudden advancement of technology over the last 25 years.

And this is how you miss the point.

At the risk of sounding like an old fogey, back in my day, if there was a need for emergency communication with my family when I was in school, I'd go to the office and make the phone call from there. And if my family needed to contact me, they would call the office and someone would announce over the intercom that I was to report to the office.

retnavybrat I understand what you mean, however now with school offices, they don’t like you asking them for help because we have our phones. Everytime I go into my high school office, they are rude and dismissive and condescending and won’t let you call your parents if they don’t want you to. I think since phones became universal, the office had become less of a resource for students, and more of a resource for teachers and administrators. Also, now a days, parents don’t really know the number for the school office and automatically message the kids. But again, it’s not a black and white issue and I see what you mean

@@ApatheticBananas People had emergencies before too. Guess what, they dealt with them without having to announce to half the world they were having an emergency.

@michael browne You clearly need to work on your reading comprehension and move past 5th grade if you think that's how science works. Your academic failures don't mean academia has failed. *You* are the problem.
