This is the song I wrote called “California” which is featured on our family’s bluegrass album “Shenandoah.” I write most of my music on the piano so here’s originally how it was written and I have the chords and lyrics posted here in the description. I thought it was something he may have sung with Carly Simon or some one like that! its not only that the Petersons are a higher music class above 99% of music produced today. Katie, I know this is late since you submitted this a long time ago, but as I listened to this, it reminded me of the fact that God has blessed in you so many ways. God made you beautiful on the outside, but most importantly on the inside, too. The songs that you compose, and come from your heart, are second only to Hymns. From your many family videos, you are fun to be with, but there's also a very deep and strong faith in The Lord, and love that you have, that comes across to everyone. Music played simply on piano is special to me. I fell in love with my wife as she played the piano in her parents home, while my non-musical self sat nearby and read or just gazed at her. We celebrated 30 years of marriage last week and it still warms my heart so to hear her play. #Blessed

What an awesome rendition of the song. It is always a treat to hear the song writer perform a song the way they originally meant it to be before it was "produced" into what is believed to be a more commercial version. Katie, I love all your songs but especially I like “Falling for You”. March 14 would have been my wife’s 66th birthday. I lost her 2 days after Christmas. When you sing about silver hair and gray hair I tear up every time. Thank you for making a sad day yesterday a little easier. I can't understand why this song hasn't gone to #1 on one of the charts for some artist, even if it is an opportunistic imitator, rather than The Petersen's themselves. It apparently can be adapted to almost any style of music. It is so very honest, as well as beautifully poetic about the pain felt in a failed relationship. All of us have experienced that, except for my two friends who fell in love with each other in middle school and made the relationship work and look easy for the last 5 decades. However, they are an exception to be envied. The rest of us get our hearts broken at least once, and we buy beautiful, sad songs to find comfort. There really should be a gold record hanging on Katie's wall for writing this great song.

This is a hit song Katie. Congratulations. I'm sure you know its good too and proud. I am a songwriter too and a recording engineer and it really feels amazing when a song comes together like that,, doesn't happen very often but when it does its pure magic. This song has it all and really hits the heart capturing the emotion of a love that almost was,, yet never to be. Hello Katie. Today I traslated the song into Italian. I know there are automatic tranlators but I wanted to do it myself to understand the feeling and get into the theme. It's not the usual song with two verses and the refrain repeated over and over, this is a story that goes on and makes you wonder, who knows how it will end...it intrigues you but at the same time makes you think about the sadness felt. Absolutely great. There is a wonderful purity in your voice that reminds me of Karen Carpenter (I am dating myself), who was taken from us too soon. The bittersweet lyrics are also arresting, although I hope we can have a "California: Part II" with happier lyrics sometime in the future. :) BTW, I hope you are registering your songs with the US Copyright Office. Copyright protection does not depend on registration, but you need a registration certificate to enforce your rights. Random chap here from Lincolnshire UK.......... Not sure that I found the Petersens so much as they found me and ultimately led me to this song. This song is nothing short of a masterpiece, it sits there right up with 'Jolene' by Dolly Parton, when it played to the full family ensemble it is as powerful as 'Brothers in arms' by Dia Straits. I have a taste for music that spans many many genres but until The Petersens found me I had never understood what Bluegrass music was nor its meanings. For that, I thank you. You really do have the magic bond that just ties in the performances, its a rare thing to see (Carpenters & Jackson 5 spring to mind) I see your music touching people far and wide. I know it has given me much comfort in the current times. Katie, never stop writing songs and never let your amazing creativity be tamed. Thank you for sharing this masterpiece with the world. This is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. You can feel the emotions as she sings. You can see on her face that she is feeling what she is singing. You can even feel the sadness. I say this as a man who was a bit of a cad in my early twenties, and broke a number of sincere hearts that deserved more than I could possibly have given at the time. I was hurting and confused myself, acting out of a lot of brokenness from my childhood, and didn't really understand myself very well. Stay strong, ready, and don't change a thing! Beautiful and from the heart. Brings back memories of days in the military, looking up at the stars, and thinking “ how can I be so sad looking up at these beautiful stars”. Knowing my chances of getting home again were, at the least, questionable. At the same time knowing I had found the one true woman in my life. Fate brought me home to her, and we have spent the rest of our lives loving each other. I realized then that I was just a small piece of God’s overall plan. Life is good! Thank you Katie for sharing your soul, and your talent.

Powerful elegance in conveying what is so relatable to so many who have had to move on from someone, particularly a first love. While it in no way diminishes the love that comes thereafter, those first-love feelings are never forgotten-as you so beautifully and artfully convey. I can imagine being able to express your experiences through music, for yourself, is a sort of pain management, recording it for others to hear, difficult medicine to help heal the wound but to be able to share this story, with the details of your composition and in such a personal way, must be liberating for you (at least I hope it is). Thank you so much for sharing a little bit of your life journey with this beautiful song-while sad, it also made me smile. Even though we parted ways (and I am, since, happily married for 24 years) it caused me to reflect on joys from my ‘California’ long ago. With that, while candles are appropriate for the mood of the song, just remember to smile and light up the room with regularity! FYI. . .this song could easily be on the country charts-it really is that good!
