It's part of the greater bay area a metropolitan area centered around San Francisco the first major settlement and for a time the largest city west of the mississippi and the only major city west of the mississippi until los angeles , san jose , and San Diego grew along with all the other major cities west of Chicago. Oakland is large enough to be considered a major city with over 400000 people and growing and there are cities population 100000 or more including g the direct suburb of San Francisco daly city which to would be considered a major city in small sparsely populated states some of which dont even have cities over 100000 anywhere in thier state. However with the exception of the north bay which is included in the metropolitan are a sub urban (perhaps splitting the the term Into the 2 parts will point out the definition of a suburb more clearly) area of San Francisco the center urban city which is the reason anything exists there and some of the suburban towns in the east bay, peninsula, south bay, and one in the north bay grew into major sized cities including san jose which happened to grow larger than San Francisco who's growth is stunted by there being no remaining land available for expansion at the edge of a peninsula blocked by daly city along its southern border....also the fact that all the cities here touch and have no space in between them really makes the region one big combined city an area known as the bay area the north bay being exception as more sparse populated rural and actually has space in between its towns more commonly known as the vineyards we call wine country. There are definitions splitting our region between San Francisco and San jose but really is one metropitIn area known as the bay area which is consists of over 8 or 9 million people and is one of the most densely populated regions in the country which is clear as you can't tell where city boundaries are being conected.....hell theres house half on the San Francisco other half on daly city side with the border sign right in front center of the house we always debated and wondered which city that house is part of and county because San Francisco is it's own consolidated city and county. So far no ones had the audacity to ring that house doorbell and bother whoever lives in that house to ask. We are really one major metropolitan area made up of the 7 or 8 bay area counties. This is the most commonly accepted view of how we define this region here. The fact is a rare occurence happened in which a suburb of a city happened to grow larger than its mother city although san jose is a boring giant suburb with the most forgettable skylines which is not even worthy of being called a skyline because it's not there because thier airport is too close to thier downtown prohibiting the possibility of any tall buildings because you know we are already traumatized with the tragedy of planes flying into buildings. The traffic sucks and unless your a sharks fan of the unpopular sport hockey theres nothing to do there. What comes to mind with an jose.....nothing because theres nothing its known for other than most forgettable skyline.

@@kashxavi1997 I'm from Orange County and honestly that is true. Southern California has an issue with traffic and the cities down here are so sprawled. I like Oakland and San Francisco more than Los Angeles cus they just stand out more and have a unique city scene without letting suburban sprawl ruin them. Honestly San Francisco has a more city vibe to it than Los Angeles does and has more attractions too like the Golden Gate Bridge. I'm not very interested in Hollywood.

Northern Californians walk around with their nose up in the air thinking they're better then every one else....So Cal folks are just more chill.

It's literally surrounded by L.A. It's in L.A. Just like people in WeHo and Beverly Hills and Pasadena want to say they're their own cities... I mean, technically maybe, but come on, they're in L.A. with the rest of us. Disneyland isn't in L.A. though. L.A. metro area yes, but it's not even in L.A. county.

As much hate as we get, we might as well be...

The Greater L.A Area has 18 million plus people in its diameter … New York on the other hand is 5 combined counties … totally not the same way we deck out population in California… Southern California alone is more populated than the entire state of New York
