Honestly, I have a different take on this show. Hank’s debauchery was amusing, but what kept him from being repugnant was his unwavering love for Karen. Unlike Lew who just idolized his past and would have never committed to his lost love had she given him a chance, Hank was sincere in hopes to reunite with Karen. Glad the series ended on a good note.
this kind of encapsulates why the show became tired: how many times did we see Hank and Karen having the same conversation? He apologies after doing something stupid, she says she loves him but can't be with him. He looks bummed. There's only so times you can play out the same scene before it becomes boring. Eventually the audience is going to want more. Or something different.
I agree with you. Tom Kapinos said the real ending is the end of Season Four BUT Hank's determination is what we clung to. Women don't ever know what they want. They know what they DON'T want. And the series ended where it should have. Hank saying Fuck it. I KNOW we're meant to be together. I'm smarter than you. Watch it happen. They held hands as they went to their daughter's wedding. As an audience, we have to believe they ended up together.
I enjoyed the show till the end, but kinda agree on that point. The show should have ended in season 4, when he goes back to NY, or season 6 with him going with Faith. His love for Karen always ended up with in self-destruction, because he's constantly trying to make up for the past, and everytime something from the past comes and hurts Karen, his instinct is to go do some new stupid thing which will hurt her again later. Even the ending, we know it's only a matter of time until he does his next stupid shit...
