This couldn't have come at a better time! I'm a huge chili pepper fan and partly picked up the guitar a month or two ago, most likely because of Frusciante. Got some chords under my belt and decided to attack a RCHP song and bam! You release my favourite. Thanks a whole lot!
Brand new beginner. Thanks for playing/teaching it the way it should be played. So hard to "hear" it correctly from some of the others on here. Could not get the "feeling" down until coming to this vid.
Glad it was helpful! There's 600+ song lessons here: www.justinguitar.com/songs and a song request feature too. | Richard_close2u | JustinGuitar Official Guide
I know this video is old. I’m a father used to play guitar modestly when I was younger. Anyways I got a guitar again about a month ago and thanks for this video, I Learned The Solo!! Not pretty but hey! Work early and it feels awesome to be up playing guitar again!!!
Thanks for taking the time to encourage us to develop our musicianship. You really go heads above any other instructor I've had/seen (private, online paid or free) and it really shows in my development as a player. I can't recommend your material (especially the physical material) enough to anyone.
Thank you so much for this walk through. Started out learning half of this solo in 2000, never got around to finish it. So, it is a very satifying fullfillment to learn last act. Thank you so much Justin, kind regards. Christian
Brilliant! I tend to learn from books and ear but its always an even greater help watching someone up close. Also the odd little bits on the other vid with the chords have taught me how to slightly jazz it up a bit. Thank you very much.
hey justin, great vid, I'm a beginner and it's good so far, just a tip for other beginners like me, can you specify each note/string or go a little slower when doing these tutorial vids. It beats going back and forth trying to figure out, otherwise thank you!
Tried it a month ago and couldnt do it well and i quit after some practice after 1 month i decided to try again and i mastered it in 30 minutes :D well done sir :D (i started playing about 2 and a half months ago)
I have been playing this wrong bcause of a tab i found on the onternet atleast now i know where to go to get things done right and i will be practising to transcribe. Thankyou
Hi justin, loved the video and even as a fairly average guitar player i can now play this!PIcked up some useful skills along the way too. Hope this gets to you, thank you.
Hey Justin, I just what to say great thank you to you for this advice at the begging of the video. I've tried to do that by ear, which I thought I can never ever do, but I managed to "decrypt" nearly 95% of the solo. It was such an interesting exercise! I came back to the video to check the parts I'm missing (end bits).. Wow, such a great tutorial of one of the best solos ever created!
This is great. Really enjoying playing this awesome song. Thanks Justin! I must say there are videos on RU-vid that have the song with lyrics and chords, so playing along to the song is a piece of cake (for those who sometimes forget the chord sequence as I do on new songs). Getting the solo one lick at a time!
You got a great sound in that video! I am struggling with that solo for years, as even if you get the notes down right, it is so hard to imitate that sound and get real expression in your tone
Hey Justin thanks as always for helping us out. By the way; I find your shirt really cool, could tell me what brand it is ? (Does anybody know ?) Thanks again
I went to learn this solo...but after Justin's first message I decided to try and learn it myself, I almost gave up the first few times but I'm almost there... interestingly it looks like I got a slightly different way to Justin too but still works! I'm up to the double bends...I have no idea how to do that by ear 🤣
Can you make a lesson for "slane castle" intro version of this song, didn't find anywhere else on the internet, just the tabs and had very difficulty learning from it.
Justin recommends that we try to pick this solo up by ear. However, what are the building blocks of picking up a solo yourself? Does any one know what are the underlying concepts of picking up a solo. (Other than knowing scales) Maybe I can learn those and then try and pick up the solo myself. Right now, I wouldn't know where to start really.
This is great and I don't mean any disrespect at all but to get his feel you really need to disregard the strong beats, having watched a documentary of him teaching some stuff one thing I picked up on is that his rhythm is totally unsterile and he is a master of manipulating time by playing in front or behind the beat and if you listen to the original solo it has a totally different feel love all your lessons but think this is a really important aspect of getting that feel
Glad you decided to also do the solo for this song. It was one of the first solo's I learned as a beginner. Could I perhaps also request the solo for Suck My Kiss? You did a lesson on it already, but I would also love to learn the solo, and with Chili Peppers you cannot go wrong! Thanks for your lesson!
Hi Justin. Any idea what scales are used in this I couldn’t work it out after looking at your play through. The chords are all in A so I assumed it would be A pentatonic of some kind but I’m not so sure despite there being a few notes from the pentatonic. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers
Really great lesson Justin, one question I have though... from chord analysis the song seems to be in the key of D minor... but the solo seems like it's in F# minor / A major. The solo sounds great but from a theory perspective I can't really figure out how this solo "works" with the song?
Verse is in Am, Chorus is Dm. The solo is just a modulation to the I major. It's a cool little trick to make it sound separate but not that separate. Think of how it makes you feel - the switch to major gives it a feel of fake relief or happiness. Think of the chorus - DREAM of Californication. The solo is a self enclosed little environment separate from the verse and chorus much like a happy major dream. When it ends it goes back to the reality of the Am chord and the hopelessness of California's depressing themes like waking up back to reality. The solo works through the contrast both thematically and harmonically. They do a lot of major to minor or minor to major modulation or just borrow a chord from the minor scale - see songs like Desecration Smile (intro is in Emaj, switches to Em for the verse to sound "darker" then to A major for the chorus), the bridge in Under the Bridge (hehehe) chords go Amaj, Am, G, F.
Hi Justin, could you please do more lessons on certain solo's please. Also when is the 2nd series beginers songbook out please? I have the others and can't find it anywhere.
Hi! 1 Question! That bend at 3:18 needs some finger power if I do it with the index. Is it wrong if I do it with the ring finger and change the position? Does it ruin the voicings?
I know this is quite a niche request, but do you think you could do Scarecrow by The Pillows? It's really hard to find any lessons for it since the band is basically unheard of outside of Japan (as far as I know) keep up the great videos ^^
Thanks alot. Another lovely video! I'd like to see a video on "Jumpin jack flash" by the Rolling Stones at some point. But its just a request...keep up the great work, its really appreciated!
