It’s almost time to begin the 5th Annual BookTube Prize. Would you like to be one of our judges in 2023? Please share this video with your bookish contacts. So many people mention to me that they didn’t know when or where to sign up. If you all include it in your own videos/posts, our reach will expand quite a bit.
Here’s the form to sign up to be a judge for 2023:
forms.gle/N3Ra...
If you’re interested in buying one of the BookTube Prize journals (USA only, unfortunately), they are $25, which includes shipping. Send me an email at robertsheard at mac dot com and I’ll share my Venmo contact information and you can tell me which style and color you’d like.
This is what I have left:
RULED PAPER
Blue Slate (6), Yellowgold (7), Charcoal (8), Light Gray (9), Stone (10), Fig Wine (7)
DOT GRID PAPER
Blue Slate (10), Yellowgold (4), Charcoal (10), Light Gray (9)

Last year was my first year and I found my absolute favourite book of the year through the Octafinals! The books I read also opened my mind to reading genres I thought I wasn’t interested in before, so I have a lot to thank the prize for. Very excited to join in again! Thanks Robert. 😊

That's absolutely the best aspect of the event in my mind. Each year I find some favorites I would have missed. Last year for me it was Claire Keegan and Percival Everett. Loved their books and never would have found either on my own. (And both of them have books on this coming year's nomination list. Bonus.)

It would be great if we had a financial reward for the winners, yes, absolutely. I don't do US law, so unfortunately I'm of no use for that process. But I'd love to help in any other way required in the future.

This is new for me so I’m reading all of the posts. I’m currently on my eighth and nineth giller prize long-list so I like to read a lot of books. When the time comes I’d look to put my hat in the ring..your work is very professional.When I look at the 2023 selection,I know a lot of the works and I wish I could read more. Are you familiar with the Bookmarks magazine.. Every issue brings reviews from around the U.S. on the latest releases. I am also a Canadian and a huge reader of Canadian lit so I have something to add there. Thank-you for all of the work you are doing. I’m very happy I found your site.

Yes, I’m a regular reader of Bookmarks for the reviews. It’s a challenge keeping up with all the releases without many good resources.

I absolutely believe that you should work your way toward making this a nonprofit that awards monetary prizes to the winner(s) of the Booktube Prize. I think that this prize should be taken as seriously as any other prize, because it is authentic and ran with such integrity. Unfortunately, I think it is best that I sit out of judging the 2023 prize, because I have quite a few projects planned for my own channel that will require great effort. I will consider hopping back in for 2024, for I would love to be at a point where I can judge all four rounds. Thank you for sharing! -Josh

I think becoming a non-profit is a great idea, Robert - thank you for all of the hard work that you continue to put into this. I'll share across my socials and expand the reach, hopefully between us all, we'll find someone within the community to help with the legal aspects and the paperwork!

So excited about this! I discovered this prize for the first time last year and I'm so excited to join in on it this year 😊 I think becoming a non-profit would be a great way to expand the prize and give it more notoriety. I don't know a ton about applying to be a non-profit, but I believe depending on the state you do it through, you would need a number of incorporators/directors. I'm happy to help in that way or any other I can! I don't have much background with that kind of stuff, but over the past year I've found myself helping with some government requests for myself and others and I'm starting to understand how to find stuff on terrible state websites haha so that might be worth something!

My favorite thing about the BTP is that by the time it’s over, we are into the holiday season and by the time the holidays are over, it starts again. A full year of reading wonderful books and expanding one’s horizons. This will be my third year judging and I can’t wait. I always sign up for all categories and have read some fantastic nonfiction that I never would have picked up (fiction reader through and through) had it not been for this prize. Very much looking forward to next year’s journey. Thank you, Robert, for all your hard work and hopefully a volunteer reaches out to help make this the event that you envision.

I'm excited to be signing up for my first round as someone with a booktube channel! I have one question regarding the translated division. Can judges read the translation into their own language, or does it have to be the english translation? I can imagine that different translation will give some books a unfair (dis)advantage, but I know that translations from into my own language are sometimes a lot easier to come by.
@BookTubePrize
@BookTubePrize Год назад
Welcome aboard, Marcella. We do ask that you only read the English edition in all divisions so that everyone is judging the same text.

@scallydandlingaboutthebook2711
Excited to sign up for my third year. Judging translated fiction this year brought me a couple of top books of my year that I would not have found otherwise. I think setting up as a nonprofit is a great idea and a good first step towards the goal of being able to offer a financial prize. I suspect you will need US folk to help as you will be registering it there so I won't offer. But say if you think otherwise.

@BobTheBookerer
@BobTheBookerer Год назад
On the financial bit, that does sound like a good idea, but I suppose it would be whether it would be sustainable to do year on year. In terms of the paperwork, I’m happy to help a little but might not have tons of time!
@BookTubePrize
@BookTubePrize Год назад
Totally agree! To make it sustainable means long-term sponsorship or an endowment. The endowment would take time to build to the point where it's sustainable without commercial sponsorship. It all depends upon how much the prize money is.

Can I ask a question or two? I think Id like to help with translated works, but I live in a rural area with a limited local library. Inter-library loan is a slow process and, honestly, I’m on a very fixed income. So, I guess I want to know if it’s even reasonable to try participating? May I ask if most of the books are available in Kindle?
@BookTubePrize
@BookTubePrize Год назад
I think a lot of them are available on Kindle, but to be fair, the Translated division is sometimes the hardest to find. My advice would be to sign up. If you can't get some of them books, as long as you let me know right away, we can find a replacement for you that round and try again in the next round. Also check out your library's resources through Libby or Hoopla if they offer those. There's also a paid subscription service, Scribd, that has many of the books. It's $8 or $9 a month, I think.

I'm already signed up and very excited for the new round! 🤩 I feel the same about the Booktube Prize becoming a non-profit and being able to offer a financial reward - it would certainly add prestige and recognition. (Unfortunately I'd be no help with any of that, though.) I admire all the work you put into it - thank you! ☺☺
