J.J. Cale had such a laid-back persona (in fact, I can't think of a better icon of back-laidness) that people who knew of him (sadly, too few) might not have recognized what a wickedly funky picker he was. His songs are stripped-down lyrically, very much so in cases like this one. I trust JJ wouldn't be offended by my altering his line "ain't no change in me" to the older folk trope of "no change in the sea", if only because it gets past the awkwardness (to me, not to JJ) of the use of "me" to rhyme with "me".
But all hail unto JJ, who deserved more recognition then and deserves fame ever after.
