In this series, we're delving into video game oblivion.
Titles that have, at some point, fallen into obscurity.
Today, we're revisiting Shadow of the Comet, the first graphic adventure set in H.P. Lovecraft's Call of Cthulhu universe, released in 1993 by the French developer infogrames.

other than you saying "despite that not being the actual ending" i don´t know what you mean by "context". or who says "congratulation shinji" in what part of the franchise? there are more than two narratives of evangelion by now.

Been replaying Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth and damn, the game really goes to shit once you get a gun. Very sad, because it starts so strong.

I agree that after getting the gun the game loses quality, but the second half of the game is just so amazing that it doesn't matter how bad the combat gets. The adventure really goes to the dark corneres of the earth, far and deep, giving you a sense of powerlessness all the way. This game is 10/10 even considering the bad combat, lack of running in the game, and the impassable game-breaking bugs!

I always have to disagree with people who say that "the essence of Lovecraft is being unable to challenge the forces of the cosmos" (or some variety thereof). There are a variety of works in which protagonists both challenge and sometimes outright defeat these very forces. The Dunwich Horror is beaten back and Yogsothoth never makes it to earth. In Call of Cthulhu, R'lyeh has risen, Cthulhu is awake - 3000 years of madness and destruction is upon humanity and a dude in a ship says "HELL NO", rams Cthulhu in the face and Cthulhu promptly decides to chill his ass back to sleep. In the Strange Case of Charles Dexter Ward, a cosmic entity straight up helps the protagonist stop the antagonist. The entirety of the Dream Cycle. Challenging the entities, or at least stalling them is possible in Lovecraft's works and has been done before

NicolasCageCultist If I remember correctly, said eldritch abomination was never named in the story. Protag accidentally summons it, faints and wakes up with the entity having left latin instructions for him to follow.

"In Call of Cthulhu, R'lyeh has risen, Cthulhu is awake - 3000 years of madness and destruction is upon humanity and a dude in a ship says "HELL NO", rams Cthulhu in the face and Cthulhu promptly decides to chill his ass back to sleep." According to the sailor who returned, Cthulhu's form was already reconstituting before he leaves the area - attempts to verify his story went unfounded as they never found either Cthulhu nor the city of R'lyeh. The narrator (a guy combing through his uncle's collection of documents) speculates that Cthulhu still slumbers after that, but that's only a guess that he ventured: for all we know Cthulhu is wandering the earth - the fact that the sailor that returned died under mysterious circumstances suggests that Cthulhu's cult (or perhaps even Cthulhu himself) saw to his demise to shut him up so they can continue operating in secret. In short, he did *not* successfully challenge Cthulhu - he simply escaped to be destroyed at a later date. "In the Strange Case of Charles Dexter Ward, a cosmic entity straight up helps the protagonist stop the antagonist." And without that rival cosmic entity the protagonist would be completely f-cked - if anything, that tale suggests that challenging an eldritch horror without the help of another eldritch horror is suicide.

UUh what about Dunwich horror ? Three elderly human professors banish bastard hybrid son of Yog Sothoth. Sure they studied and read necronomicon but it still counts. Humans can fight eldritch beings when armed with knowledge and equipment, also most of mythos monsters are destrucible...barring outer gods

I always thought the idea with Lovecraftian horrors was less that the old ones are malevolent and more that they're totally indifferent to humanity. Using them as a minor stepping stone to accomplish their own goals with any great success on humanities part being little more than the equivalent of you finding a pebble in your shoe on the way to the store. It's this element which is very hard to capture in a video game where you're almost always going to be the center of the world driving it forwards with even games like Kingdom Come: Deliverance which do very well to make you feel like a minor cog in a machine eventually falling away to center on the player. I think interestingly enough the game which best captures the core of Lovecraftian horror is MGS2 where the established order gives way to an absolutely batfuck reality which is impossible to fully comprehend and that you cannot actually harm or influence directly. In the end the antagonistic entity accomplishes its mission, you receive no closure and you having been revealed as little more than a pawn the whole time only react by rejecting the entire event and moving on into willful self delusion to cope with everything that just happened. At least until MGS4 fucked it all up of course.

Can't see the reply to this comment but I'm sure knowing RU-vid that it was a very well written and nuanced take ;)
@robrick9361
@robrick9361 2 месяца назад
Have to disagree. The antagonistic in MSG2 still took the time to explain what it was doing, which contradicts the entire point of The Old Ones. They are unknowable, an Old God explaining its intentions to a human would be like the antagonistic in MGS2 explaining its plans to a mosquito.

My favorite game adaptation of Lovecraft's work has to be the "Entity" Deck in Yugioh, because the experience of attempting to make it for any official tournament truly captures the feeling of morbid curiosity, desperation, and madness that the author is known for.

Your closing point about the game's technical limitations being part of its charm really hit home for me. I love early adventure games, and a big part of the appeal was how the narrow scope made them feel inherently mysterious, and fired my imagination about what's happening 'just out of frame' in the game's world. I had never considered this before, but that characteristic makes adventure games an ideal format for Lovecraftian themes -- stories about monstrous things lurking outside the contours of reason and imagination. Thanks for making such a great video.

>defeating lovecraftian horrors goes against the nature of the matter >Cthulhu is defeated by a steamboat >Other elder gods have been banished by incantations tbh Lovecrafts works were all over the place. Gameplay wise, the trick would to make the player feel the price that one has to pay to go toe to toe with a literal god. The Cthulhu p&p system has a pretty good way to deal with that issue.

I always think the bartender? (might be the wrong character)who "will take you there" himself, looks like an animation of Jack Nicholson in "The Shining ". You show him in the first few minutes of this video and anyone who has seen Jack or "The Shining " should immediately recognize the character I'm referring to.
@n1lknarf
@n1lknarf 4 года назад
9:30 see, you are missing the point of game mechanics used as a resource to induce what the game is trying to portrait. The fact that you know something is there but have no means to communicate easily with it, because you have to learn "its" language. The way you control the character in this game and the things you have to do with the character are setting you in the position of the eldritch alien controlling the fate of a mere human who will never imagine its being controlled by an entity from another dimension. You are not the character in this game, you are the eldritch being. That's the essence of Lovecraft's idea put in a game.
@Harryeaster
@Harryeaster 5 лет назад
Eh, the ending is alright. I think the idea that a lovecraftian horror has to end badly is quite overrated. Shaken, yes, but not always glibbering and screaming. Some of them jump even forwards in fear and try to kill it, because that's what kept mankind also alive. Lovecrafts heroes were almost always avatars of himself. And he was quite a delicate person. But every human works through horror in their own way, so there can be a GOOD end, but in the knowledge, that this is a personal victory, not a final one. Because there are always even bigger monster outside of our comprehention. That is, what lovecraftian horror is for more about (besides the racism, the phobia of everything and the fear of being alive in a big, scary world that is rapidly changing or that stays scary), not the whole "oh it has to end in madness and all that."

The thing about Lovecraft and "madness" is that in his stories, he explicitly makes it clear to the reader that his characters are not "mad", they simply know things beyond what is scientifically or rationally explainable, and they appear as mad to other people. Mountains of madness is a good example where the survivor, Dyer, warns others from staying away explicitly because he understands what these things are, but to anyone reading his warning he would seem like an insane person. THAT is the crux of Lovecraftian horror. Not that you will "go insaaaaane", but that beyond the veil of quaint victorian-era life and the civil behavior of society are unconscionable beings just waiting to be discovered, who are indifferent to humanity as a whole, and any attempt to bring these beings to light will make you look insane.

There just needs to be a balance. You can't just go all "Fuck Batman" and think that's what makes one of his stories what they are. Even in the Lovecraft stories there's usually SOME /kind/ of victory, some SORT of "Success". The Dunwich Horror - Humanity defeated the herald of the outer things, and briefly sealed a single gate by which it could reenter. Destroy it? Course not. Still a win? Yep. The Mountains of Madness - The one retelling the story is doing so at the attempt to stop a further, deeper expedition. Will he? Probably not. But is it still him doing something positive with the nightmare he'll live with the rest of his life? Yep. The Thing on the Doorstep - A smaller, calmer version of the Dunwich tale, where friendship is lost and horror revealed, yet the story still ends on the dubious up-note of having stopped the body hopping cold. Or at the very least, denied it a powerful form in which to spread even worse terrors. THAT's the trick. Victory in a world of failure.
@ShadowoftheMask

Hmm, I don't really think Lovecraftian stories HAVE to end hopelessly bleak. I mean, suuuuuuure, all of them have the "This is just stalling the inevitable" thing, but Call of Cthulhu ends with things being rather fine besides the dude who rammed the ship through Cthulhu becoming nervous wreck and Shadows Over Insmouth ends with mc being pretty happy about changing into fish person (which is probably the intended horror for the reader) :p But yeah, Shadow of the Comet's ending doesn't really fit lovecraftian stories in that Parker doesn't really seem affected by the whole experience. Like if he seemed to have become darker, paranoid or otherwise more unhinged it could work better.

If you want to play this game on a modern machine, DON'T use the regular DOSBox. Use DOSBox Staging instead. The regular DOSBox is a terrible emulator by today's standards and this game shows. I also recommend playing the floppy version instead of the CD one and using keyboard for all of your controls, since that's how the game was intended to be played. The CD version has obnoxious voice acting and equally annoying mouse cursor on the screen.

It's one of those games where you bring it up and people are either "WTF is that?" or "YO, I used to love that game!" and I really think it deserves more love. Fair warning though, if by some miracle, you do decide to make a video on it, it's a four disc PSX RPG, so that's A LOT of hours to sink in.

You don't get to meet an elder god then get to say "He almost killed me".

Is it mere coincidence that there's a rash of delightful Lovecraftian lore/study/essays spreading in the last couple weeks? First Hbomber, then Mythology Explained, now you? I feel spoiled. :)

#GemSuggestion Shadow Hearts. Very Lovecraft inspired JRPG. You could even go into its prequel Koudelka which is atmospheric and unfolds almost like a stage play.

#GemSuggestion Persona 2: Eternal Punishment. Because Nyarlathotep is there, because the story is amazing, it has dark themes, based on psychology etc. - images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61j8fpnekSL.AC_SL1280_.jpg

#GemSuggestion Legacy of Kain Blood Omen. In my humble opinion is the best part of the whole franchise. Soundtrack, plot is just genius. Please make film about this game. With your comment it will be something priceless.

How about The Neverhood or Myst? #GemSuggestion Also, I love to never hear you butcher any pronounciation, it always grinds my gears when I am watching an American youtuber for example butcher the pronanciation on something even as trivial as a French name. Keep up the good work!

For CPU Cycle issue in ANY game use the free program called CPU Grabber. It limits the power of your CPU by however much you tell it to. It fixed a lot of issues I had with legacy of Kain.

Played this when it first came out, although I don't remember that ending, maybe I mercifully never finished it. Fantastic atmosphere but clunky controls. Still a great game.

There's a new game that just came out last month on Steam called lust for Darkness I think you should check out. It was successfully backed on Kickstarter. It involves a sex cult and is inspired by Lovecraft and beksinski

Yo, I don't know if you've been approached by the "iclassics collection" people in the app market, but I honestly think you'd be the perfect person for a sponsored video with them. Loving the vids bro!

I always did imagine that, if mankind was able to successfully defy an elder god, it'd be with the assistance of another elder god; Either with their assistance being for said diety's own gain, or because they were simply one of the few outliers who thought it was none of their kind's business to poke around in our way of life, and is simply just giving the world a means to basically have a fighting chance to kick them out. Either way, it'd basically be something that would destinctively indicate just how out of our league in comparison to an elder god, that we'd ultimately be when left to our own devices.

i never got that "uneasy" undefined feeling in the town, it was rather a bright nicely drawn typical 90s graphic environment...not even a hint of some wicked mystical ... just cause all those lovecraftian clichees ppl have to mention it + repeat

I don't think that ending is actually all that far off from Lovecraft. The day is saved at the end of the Dunwich Horror too. A 70 year old librarian blows up the son of Yog-Sothoth and the Old Ones stay safely on the other side of the Gate.

To be honest, its not like the ending is a complete antithesis to Lovecraft. All Parker did was maintain the status quo, which is about as much as one can hope to do, it's even said in game that this will all happen again. Though it is very peculiar that Parker is completely unphazed from seeing actual monsters, guess he is just that hard.

I would just like to point out that Cthuhlu isn't a god, he's a very powerful priest and he was greviously harmed and put back to sleep in his first story by having a boat driven into him. There are cooler things in the mythos than the only guy anyone seems to know.

If anyone likes a very good Cthulu style game should play Anchorhead. It's a text adventure so it might not be for everyone, but it's free. #gemsuggestions

Try PCem for old software with timing problems. It can do cycle accurate emulation of some IBM compatibles, if your hardware is up to it.
