The most stunning is that we understand each word she sings in French! And it’s a live performance ! Even French opera singers don’t pronounce the way Callas does. That means and proves that she was working a lot to be able to sing so perfectly. This is Callas !

This is very important to be said indeed. Thank you! Lol. It's all about her flawless diction, with all vowels developed beyond perfection. She does sound clearer and better than many French and even Italians in many moments tbh. It's absolutely professorial and a reference for eternity. It's impossible to understand how she could "check all the boxes" like this. She's miraculous.

Well all l can say is that it takes a lot of courage to attempt Armida in a concert. By 1954 Maria's reputation was well established, she had nothing to prove. If she felt she could deliver a Callas performance she did without restraint. Well aware of her potential she spoiled her public. Dear Titonut, once again you bring back the glory of this unique star. Your passion and dedication is commendable. Thank you so much for sharing it with us. God bless you, be safe.

Due grandi artisti quasi contemporanei ma di stili assolutamente opposti. Interessante sentire qui la modernità di Maria Callas in paragone con Gigli e di si rendere conto dell'importanza dell'impronta sua nell'ambito della lirica. Forse l'anno il più felice della sua carriera.

angalafan caro signore o signora non erano quasi contemporanei non lo erano affatto! il debutto di Gigli risale al 1914 i suoi primi dischi al 1918 ! 5 anni prima che la Callas nascesse(1923) ! Sono epoche totalmente diverse per dei cantanti lirici! Per il resto concordo ! La diva al massimo delle sue stratosferiche possibilità e un Tenore tre anni prima di morire ma che cantava ancora come un ventenne! Strepitoso documento! Quanti cantanti poi possono vantare questa freschezza vocale a 64 anni?

Just take a moment and think about this: the Same Voice just sang (and superbly I might add) Charpentier’s Louise with sweeping lines and legato and Rossini’s Armida with insane Coloratura, force, and whole octave shifts, within 5 minutes of each other. Light and Lyrical to Dramatic Coloratura at the flip of a switch. It boggles the mind.

Why do you people overcomplicate this beautiful art? It’s fucking ridiculous. It boggles the mind? How the fuck so? It’s called being human. You know, being able to whisper one sentence then the next scream. In fact we do it every day without thought. Callas knew how to control the breath. Nothing superhuman about that. In fact that’s what makes a great technique. Being able to sing naturally. The moment we stop sensationalizing art the sooner we can reclaim opera for what it is. Natural spontaneous singing. I implore you to see callas as the vulnerable complex human she is rather than some mystical creature because she can sing quiet one moment then loud the next. Why the fuck shouldn’t anyone be able to do so? She said herself a voice should be able to sing everything and there’s nothing special about that. It’s how it should be.

Gigli is 64 here! Astounding - pianissimo to fortissimo with perfect tone, with a stunning high B at the end of the first aria. He was one of the great technical singers who knew exactly how to sing ... and last. Sad that he had only three more years to live.

Callas is ETERNAL! How fortunate I was to be present at a concert at CW POST with Dr Stefano. I can still feel my face in pain from smiling so much during her singing O MiI Babbino Caro! And her Master Classes! Was at all of them!

75patpat, j'ajouterais qu'aucun soprano (ni de France, ni d'ailleurs) n'a jamais chanté un "depuis le jour" aussi bouleversant (meme la performance de Tebaldi, en Italien, de cet air, pour parfaite qu'elle soit coté beauté de la voix, n'atteint pas le niveau d'émotion suscité par Callas)

I may be one of the few left, who heard that concert on the Italian radio in 1954. It was one of the Martini & Rossi Monday concerts. My family never missed one. I was 18 and I'll never forget that one. Sergio.

Callas was a singer sinequanon, but besides a great singer she was a great actress, sorry her personal life was not happy having more than one famous men enlove with her, depression killed her voice and her life. God Bless Maria 🙏

Gigli had such a superb voice,. It soars with softness and precision yet is able to provide power when it is really needed. So many of the moderns imagine the only thing needed is a powerful delivery sometimes almost resulting in a shout with attempts to keep up the power even when the libretto does not call for it. I heard him give one of his last concerts in the Usher Hall in Edinburgh. Despite past his best the sweetness of his voice was still there even if he avoided top C .I bought all the vinyl records of the day and how wonderful they were.

Il duo è stato chiesto sia a Maria che a Beniamino, ma chi non ha accettato, è stato Gigli, quindi non hanno cantato alla fine insieme un duo di qualche Opera a Comun, che ce ne sono stati molti senza grandi pretese, un vero peccato.

This collection shows how unconventional Callas's voice and technique were. The expression in Depuis le jour is exquisite, but she is finding it hard to control her voice there -- it's pretty unfocused at times. Yet her Armida is close to perfect, except for the handful of High C's. I think most sopranos would find Depuis le jour much easier than Armida. (Her performances of Dinorah and Tutte le torture from the same concert are also superb, again, except for the HIgh C's.) Listening to Gigli here makes me realize how much Tagliavini sang in his shadow. The resemblance is uncanny.

Фантастичні ,феноменальні Maria Callas i Beniamino Gigli !!! Сьогодні Велику Оперу поховали вокальні інваліди і відсутність попита публіки через ,знов таки, відсутність професійної критики. Музика зародилася голосом,без нього вона і померає. Ніякі віртуози інструменталісти не здатні передати інтонації душі живої людини. В співі є молитовність до Творця і його іпостасій , як звернення до Батька його найдорощіх дітей. Сьогодні я знов почув саме такий Спів Божіх Творінь !!!

My first hit for "Titonut 2017" and I say this is an amazing restoration ... I've heard other issues in various format, and this sounds better than some of the recent Warner "Live" re-issues. Thank you for this. Not even Sutherland could produce those flicked-off ascending and ascending chromatic scales - and legato at that. And in character. One weeps. How we miss her and how we wished for more...

Gigli is magnificent. Callas makes sense of the music, but, as always, her high notes wobble. I saw her at The Met in Norma and La Traviata. It was the same in those performances. I saw Gigli twice at Carnegie Hall in 1955. The sound of his voice was still amazing.
