CALLAS TAKES MET BY STORM (Lucia di lammermoor 1956)

As far as the audience was concerned, the opera at the Metropolitan last night was Donizetti's "Maria Meneghini Callas."
Judging by the wild jubilation of the crowd, it was a far more fitting title than the pedantic and ponderous one given in the program book, "Lucia di Lammermoor."
This was Mme. Callas' first portrayal at the Metropolitan of the celebrated coloratura role of Mad Lucy. That she stole the show isn't exactly news. This time she stole the opera along with the show.
The excitement of the crowd mounted in volume and intensity till it exploded like a bomb after the "Mad Scene." Lucy Lucey and her last note collapsed together and the crowd went wild.
One would have supposed that the demented little Scotch girl had just been impersonated by a composite Bernhardt, Duse, Mary Garden and Tetrazzini. Mme. Callas wasn't quite that -but she was Callas. As such, the house was hers.
It was an oddly contradictory performance in some ways. There was the undeniable fascination of the lady as personality and show woman. Yet, she wasn't truly moving as the helpless troubled Lucy.
Amazing Shrewdness.
She sang with amazing shrewdness of half voice and subtle shifts of color, and once in a while with real beauty of tone. Yet, as a whole, it wasn't warm and attractive vocalism. Too much tin foil around the voice.
She botched the last note of the "Mad Scene," yet some could argue that is precisely what would happen to a mind unhinged - voice and mind would crack together. Mishap or stunt, it had a weird, shivery effect.
You couldn't help taking notice of Maria Callas last night. The theatrical flair, the studied gesture, the assertive force riveted your attention. You were all eyes instead of all ears, which reverses the usual order in coloratura.
The others, Giuseppe Campora, Enzo Sordello, Paul Franke among them, gracefully took a back seat, not to mention a backstage - Mme. Callas having been permitted the royal solo bow after the "Mad Scene."
Fausto Cleva conducted with alert care.

She plays her voice like a virtuoso violinist, with astoundingly passionate dynamics. Only Callas can give such clear emotional meaning to every crescendo, diminuendo, pianissimo & forte. I believe that fellow musicians would feel inspired to give music so much more by following her example. Today’s classical performances are quite incompetent compared to this.

Unfortunately for classical music theres no after after Callas. She raised the bar that high that only a sci-fi android could reach her abilities in the far far future. But AGAIN there will never be "technology" for the SOUL. La Divina first sung with her soul and then her chords were following.

It might sound strange but my favorite Lucia is the one from Rome 1957. I don't know why but that mad scene has something magical and ethereal. The way she sings it is like she is in heaven, floating her voice through the multiverse or something. It's quite difficult to describe with words. It makes me cry all the time and feel shivers all over. When using headphones it really is something out of this world.

I NEVER normally post opinions on RU-vid, but reading this comment about Callas' voice, in 1957, I have to say that in my opinion, this year was the one, where her voice was in perfect balance - frailty together with magnificence. Her Scala Bolena is a case in point.

We are talking about a artist not a robot. If she missed a few notes or her voices failed her at times what's a person to do except the best under under these circumstances. l don't think it's fare to bring up that she was booed every time she performed at the Met. Maria like other artist had her fans and non-fans. Now one has to wonder why should you pay to see a artist you don't like unless it is to disturb her BEFORE she even utter a sound!

This is an interesting performance that proves her point that Lucia is actually a “low role.” Her top is frail, but the performance is still effective, even though she is clearly concentrating hard to phonate (particularly in earlier bits of the opera). In other words, the exclamation points are missing, but the sentences are still there. Not ideal, but better than the reverse.

She is great in her own right, but evades the darkness and complexity of the role. To me Sutherland was unsurpassed in Baroque style, but in bel canto music with its enormous demands for dramatic expression, Sutherland really didn’t understand how to sing “as if she were speaking”-parlare as the Italians say, and her acting skills were perfunctory-except in comedy.

A feeble attempt to rewrite history. Callas only came to the Met three times and all three times she was booed, and rightfully so. By 1956 at age 33 her voice sounded old, tired and was relentlessly failing her. Lucia no exception - the shrill singing, cracked or omitted high notes were not "okay" because she was playing an insane woman -- that's just Callas Cult crap. The same goes today for the inferior talents of the new singing "actor." Garbage in, garbage out.
