When I discovered on every street at 14 yrs old now 43) the drumming was so good and different from anything on the radio and charts, I became fascinated, I then learnt the album beat for beat! Eventually 'the Internet' gave me amazing footage of Chris playing on every street concerts and On The Night. I thought for years it was Chris playing on the original, On Every street album, to which I now know it was Jeff Porcaro. 1000% respect and appreciation for Chris to play the same, so we get to see the drumming live and study it. Videos like this from Chris are so amazing, thanks Chris so much!!.
Brilliant. The best opening song ever for a live performance. I’ve watched this time and time again on VHS tape version and especially the drum parts blew my mind. Love it.
Chris, your live drumming on this tour had me absolutely mesmerised as a young, aspiring drummer. Thanks for this tutorial and thanks for the memories.
@@ChrisWhittenMusic Chris , I am a pianist , but also play drums. Your drumming inspired me a lot , when I was a teen. Here is my drum cam from the studio session . Please check it out. God bless , hello from Russia with love! All arrangements keys , guitars were recorded by my self, besides bass , vocals . ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4yR8rUhLLZo.html
Chris You are the hero drummer of my childhood. I fell in love in drumming because of you on the drums in “on the night live”. I’m so proud to say you this, thanks RU-vid that you are here.
Wow this was amazing! I just recently discovered this song and have been blown away by how Jeff Pocaro recorded this. This is a great breakdown and drum lesson. I’ve been searching his name many times on RU-vid but this video never came up. You should consider sharing this with more Pocaro fans! Chris you are a beast!
You sir are a legend, i remember as a kid watching your performance and repeating every part of that solo, i grew with that solo as my favorite drum solo ever, thank you! Rock on!
Life is a very complex and strange thing. Some people get overjoyed by whatever things, might be even a simple one. Personally, I am completely overwhelmed and overjoyed to listen to this drum solo in this way. To highlight it and focus on it instead of on the song itself is a pure delight. I can say this video is one of my top 10 ever discoveries on RU-vid. Many, many, many thanks, Chris 🙏
You're the one who is being humble here Chris, it's so pleasant to see people with that behavior and approach to life, that is the right way to be. Taking advantage of your kindness, I humbly suggest/request something, which would be wonderful to see as well: Could you do some sort of similar video to this one, on the drum part of another song from Mark Knopfler also played by Danny Cummings, Speedway to Nazareth: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vs91er7AZmg.html I noticed many positive comments on Danny's work in this song, from people who unlike me, seem to understand drumming. While and don't understand its technicality, this piece of drumming on this live performance sounds simply marvelous.
Sure, no worries... just trying... 😄 Calling Elvis drums is thus far more significant to me anyway. Did you play in Lisbon by the way? I assisted to the concert but don't remember in which year it was. I remember though, that the concert started with Calling Elvis and the very beginning was a drum solo for a more extended length of time. It was so impacting that I returned home after the concert drumming that solo in my head... and since then never have forgotten it anymore. Precious life memory event...
Thankyou chris.ime a old rocker lol 67 and watched some great drummers in my time buddy rich joe marello bonham baker peart palmer collins and many more love jo..and you are right up there with the greatest...i love your energy power and timing...and what i call a great musical drummer...it was great to find your post on youtube.you're drumming on calling elvis is fav of mine...really skillful.perfection.fantastic.hope new year is fantastic for you..with much admiration and appreciation..ian...and many thanks.
Chris I was 16 when I watched that tour ! Now 46 . Still watch it now thanks to you tube . I spent 3 yrs studying drums and last year biult my own drum studio . That tour and at time sting with vinnie shapped my whole life as a drummer . Thank you for this video great insight .
I was there. 1992, Cologne Müngersdorf Stadium. That day the stadium record got broken, in terms of visitor numbers. I was 19 years young and the biggest Dire Straits fan ever.
With no brillant drummer...no dire straits possible...thanks for the great job you've done on this 90 incredible tour !!! I was at Nîmes and Montauban... it was absolutely amazing ❤❤❤❤
Gentlemen, Chris is a true legend, every work of his is a marvel, both with the DS and with Paul Mc....and many others, Chris you are a great drummer!!!!!
Thank you so much Chris. During the On the Night tour you inspired me to learn to drum (at a late age!). It has become my main hobby and I play in a band! Cheers from Brasil (I did note you inserted some bossa nova grooves - double kicks - in one of the songs during the show)
Chris!! It seems to me you haven't been given the credibility for re creating Jeff's playing, and also, knowone has played sultans of swing so brilliantly like you. As fans we've listened to all the versions a thousand times and more should be said for your playing!. We SO appreciate these videos on your days with direstraits. You smashed it and did us fans behond proud!.
Hi Chris any chance you can do a video of your drumming for Sultans of Swing 91/92. It's my favourite piece of drumming ever, particularly the first half 🙏 Best wishes Daniel
Chris, when this video showed up in my feed I fast forwarded a bit and thought, huh this guy’s actually pretty good. Then I realized you were *the guy*! Iconic drum part and a great show opener.
You sir, are whom I was looking out for. I kid you not. You were amazing on that tour "On the night" . I could not get enough of you. You looked so young and full of zest. That combo in the middle with the other percussionist was amazing...! This comment is when I just got on your view and am watching. But when you get to "Calling Elvis' with your drums I peed my pants, for the sheer accuracy of your drumming. My wife was all over the floor laughing. Yeah right.... Ok.. jeez..! Your lifelong fan.
God bless you Chris. You provide solace to the soul that is craving music. Mark is one of my all time favs, and it is through him, I've found you. Hope you get to his band once again.
ABSOLUTELY and UTTERLY FABULOUS Chris... I remember seeing dIRE sTRATS in concert on their 1986 tour and am ruing not seeing them and you Chris on their ‘92 world tour... I did see you play though Chris in Sydney during the live performance of the Brothers In Arms album with like-minded musicians... I play the DVD of the On Every Street tour incessantly... I think I’m addicted to the dIRE sTRAITS and Knopfler sound of that tour with your drumming Chris... Well done... What I’d do to see you all again on tour... Anyway, thank you for this... Please do other tracks too... Thanks...
Sorry for my English, I'm French… Google translation… When I was 20 I watched this concert dozens and dozens of times! I know it by heart, the slightest break, the slightest Hi Hat opening! It had been broadcast on television and filmed in Nimes. Thank you for these hours of happiness! I am glad to have discovered your RU-vid channel!

Chris, I saw this tour in Wellington, New Zealand. Great memories I was 19. Just love the album On Every Street esp Planet of New Orleans. I moved to the UK in 2000 age 27. A pity you weren't treated with much respect on the tour. Not even a smile on stage from..as you say probably 3rd choice drummer. I think you were awesome for the tour and always will. Jeff and Manu didn't want the long gig.
Greetings to you sir. I am 21 and my love for music has brought me here. Have been a fan of Mark and the others since little, and now of yours as well. Thanks for giving the world so much Music and now teaching it to the new generation of story tellers, intrepid explorers and crazed sound maniacs. We surely need it. Thanks!
Mr Chris Whitten , that sir was absolutely bloomin brilliant!! I was present at The Calling Elvis tour and your drumming was superb and made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up ! The whole performance that night was amazing and the qualities of all the musicians that night was memorable. Thank you for posting this video .
I usually don't watch many drum Videos. (Far too many plonkers showing off) But I love the Videos of Chris Whitten and Steve White. Those two Gentleman are not just great drummers. They are great musicians and that makes all the difference.
Well...that was a lesson on the highest level it can be...From the master himself. Being a part of a super rock group like Dire Straits, I guess says it all... It was a great pleasure for me watching you play and learning from you.Thank you for the wonderful music.
thanks Chris ! i was a very young drummer on that "on every street " tour . in Rome i was listening the concert on you on your left .... wearing a zildjian tshirt ..... shouting at you " hey Chris gimme a stick !!!! and you did ! lovely lovely memories ! she still with me ! thanks Again ! best concert in my life !
Thank you Chris. This is a marvelous gift for all DS's fans. I had the pleasure and the honor to see Dire Straits live during the OES tour. I remember your great ability and your passion to play the drums and the great expressiveness of the Dire Straits orchestra. Yeah, the legendary Dire Straits wasn't an ordinary rock band but an authentic multi talented orchestra. How many awesome talents in this band! Only for the drums and percussion in the Dire Straits history it's possible to mention Pick Withers, Terry Williams, Omar Hakim, Manu Katché, Jeff Porcaro, Danny Cummings and Chris Whitten. Thank you so much!!!!!
I was in werchter concert in Belgium may 1992 and again i Rome in september 1992! And your performance Cris was just amazing! Thank you! But that years DIre straits were at the top of the world!
This is an excellent insight into your brilliant performance on the OES tour, I saw 3 shows in total, 2 at the NEC, front row 😊 both nights, and Woburn Abbey, 4 rows from the front, I remember Jimmy Nail was sitting a few rows behind, anyway, thanks for the fabulous memories.
LOL small world. I was at Birmingham NEC. I was at Woburn Abbey as well the night it was on Radio 1. Saw them at Earls Court as well they were brilliant. Always remember how the show opened with the lights dimmed down and that little drum beat in the background. Then Boom they were there " Yeah we alright" lol loved it ! To go from that to Taylor Swift is quite sad really.
No better song to open a gig with! Especially when DS are doing it. I was so lucky to have seen you guys play in 91 and 92. Always remember the build up and rush that happened when that first chord was struck. And that ending...wow!! Superb musicians! Thank you for posting Chris.
Back in ‘92 this was the first CD I ever bought, I was 12 at the time. The drumming on this album inspired me to take up drumming myself after much air drumming along to these songs… So thank you for the inspiration🙏💪🏻. Still one of my all time favorite albums, great drumming. And the sound of those N&C drums is marvelous! Rock on! Greetings from the Netherlands
Chris Thank you for this jewel, many of us would love even more songs from On The Night, btw you move exactly like 30 years ago, same moves and same grimaces
@@ChrisWhittenMusic Hi Chris. Awesome. The moves, timing and energy look as fine as ever. The grimace is cool too! This was really awesome. I didn't know your name until today. A lot a folks were raving about the drummer on a DS video and it sure caught my eyes and ears too. So I did some searching and there you are. I'll watch some more soon. I hope you're doing well.
First: Dire Straits 'Calling Elvis', a masterpiece, from start to finish. Second, Chris Whitten, you are a true, professional without a doubt, your timing, the exact time, it shows, your talent, without your drumsticks the piece would not be as masterful as it is, Chris, great drummer, few like you . Congratulations plus the pride of having been the performer of Dire Straits magic, along with MK. Golden age of rock music.
Tour 92 must have been an incredible adventure. All these places that you could see and all these people! I see in the videos that you have fun playing, great Drums, with great sound, I love the way you play. You have been my idol for years! Thanks Chris 👏👏👏
When the Calling Elvis album came out, I thought that the opening song of that recording was really different to anything I ever heard at that moment. Although I already was a musician myself, my musical knowledge was too limited to deeply analyse and properly understand the piece. I found it odd and didn't exactly love it, but I could feel it was a really good piece of rock music and therefore I enjoyed it so much. Three decades later, I absolutely love the piece, which I often listen to, and I have finally understood that Dire Straits created a true masterwork. This song has a soul and a sound absolutely unique like nothing I ever heard before. Paul Franklin's pedal steel guitar sound blended with the rest of the band so well and with him in the band, I think Dire Straits absolutely reinvented itself. Everybody knows that Mark has always been a wonderful soloist, and Alan's keyboard textures and piano arrangements are simply perfect and pivotal for the sound of the band. But Calling Elvis brought us another genius, an absolutely wonderful player that in my opinion, could play as creatively as Mark. And I really mean that. The amount of melodic ideas that Paul presents in just that song is simply overwhelming. Nothing I ever heard before or after that album resembles that piece, and for me, the song Calling Elvis is almost a new genre in itself. Chris, what can you tell us about the piece? What did you think when you heard if for the first time? Thank you so much.
Dear Chris, I'm a long time DireStraits fan and I actually saw you guys in oslo during the "on every street" tour. I was like 18 at the time and this was my first experience with a big stadium concert. And I was blown away , for many reasons: First: TWO drummers? , learned later that this was drummer+ percussionist..........anyway, amazing............that drum/percussion part of "calling elvis" towards the end there.......oh boy.......Second..... Paul Franklin.....introducing pedal steel guitar to something other than country music!! Third and final: Why is it (on every street tour) that during "sultans of swing" you sit in front of the stage with a different drum kit? Have wondered about that since -92....Probably a good reason, I'm sure, but I can't figure it out...........please educate🙂
Because in the main show I was way up high at the back. Sultans started out as a four piece in that show, but I was the only one far from the action. It meant my drumming seemed divorced from the music.
Ahh, off course!, Can't believe I missed that for all these years! Makes perfect sense now! Memories from -92 is somewhat blurry, and by watching video recordings you can easily tell that Paul F is not there at first, but hard to tell about the other guys unless you really pay attention. And with everybody being there at the end, I always assumed they were always there, just not doing a whole lot until the last part. Anyway, the -92 tour Sultans is on the very top of the list of my favorite live performances. The drummer had quite a lot to do with that! Thanks a lot for your reply!!
Hi Chris, I wanted to congratulate you in person now that you have your own private channel here on you tube, since the 90s that I followed your On Every Street tour, surely for you musicians it will have been a great musical experience to be able to play with Mark for everything the world tour between 91/92. I tell you last time we watched live On The Night on DVD at my house and we tried to understand what battery you were using on that tour, because we didn't understand if it is a battery of a known brand or if it is a handcrafted battery built for you. thank you for your attention and my greatest compliments you are a terrific drummer. From Italy Francesco
