But just know that your father's absence doesn't define the type of father you will be. Kam, the mindset that no matter what he is your biological father and deserves the respect for just that is so admirable and shows so much maturity and strength. My dad is my hero just like you say because my mom walked out on me at 16 and never ever looked back. I can respect she’s my mom and I wouldn’t be in the world if it wasn’t for her but she’s not a parent and she’s not there for me and she doesn’t deserve anything from me. My father was also absent (even when he was present). my unsolicited advice is just let it go because the interest has to be both ways and in trying to get information you might be setting yourself up for more heartache. If in the 24 years of your life you, and your siblings, were not important enough for him to take a deliberate step to get to know you even though you've kept the door open and all he had to do was walk through it, then why should you make him important enough to disturb your life? You already know what being a bad father looks like, all you have to do is avoid doing that. I've watched my step daughter go through all that pain and it sucks to watch. From what I have been seeing you seem like a wonderful young man who has a good head on your shoulders and I know that you are going to be an amazing dad to your son or daughter. Kameron, as someone who at your age went through the thick of it with my dad as well, I definitely did not have the guts to call him and tell him any major news. Proud of you. My Dad officially left once I turned 21 and we didn’t speak for almost a decade. Things are better now, but it’s still very much a process. It’s so surreal to go through the grief of losing a parent and they are very much alive, but choosing not to be in your life. You need answers, and it’s more than ok to ask them for both your u and your baby. Your Dad is missing out on the beautiful family and life that you and your Tricia have already built together. It’s his loss. I pray that one day your Dad feels that loss and opens up to you, but if not just know that his absence has taught you how to be an even better father than you probably would’ve been in the first place. My dad terminated his rights when I was 3 years old. He remarried, raised a daughter that wasn't his, and three of his own kids, but couldn't be there for me.... I have tried to reach out to him as I got older, I put forth an effort, met him in person when I was 25 and he just didn't show interest, and he's put forth no effort ever since. In fact he's done the opposite, he's blocked me on fb and his new wife had no clue I even existed until my sister told him and that hurt. I respect that he gave me life, that he is my father, I will continue to extend the proverbial olive branch but if he doesn't reach out I don't let it hurt me. I have my own kids now and I honestly feel that I am a better mother because of my experiences in spite of him. His absence made me want to be there for my kids more. I want to do and be better for my babies because I know how it feels to have absent parents, no one there to cheer you on from the side lines and nurture you. So let me be one of the many that will tell you that Kam, you will never be like your dad, you will be better as a parent, spouse, person, etc. and its because you are stronger from his lack of being there. Kam, I was adopted when I was 3 so I know the feeling all too well of wanting to talk to or see a biological parent to learn more about yourself. Especially when having a child of your own on the way it’s always nice to know family history and all that. But don’t feel like you have to do anything because of what people are commenting. Being angry takes a toll on your body and mental health. It’s also very hard to forgive and it is a process trying to not be angry and be the bigger person when you feel like they should have been the bigger person. I don’t have a dad , I have begged and pleaded with my mum to tell me who he is, she point blank refuses, I think deep down this has caused me to be in broken relationships, have “daddy issues” and my mental health isn’t the best. All I have ever wanted to know is the “ OTHER HALF” of ME it’s like that jigsaw with a piece missing. I totally understand how Kam feels and is talking about. Sometimes you can't put things in the pass without proper closure. But by his father's reaction it just says that he is a or may be a deadbeat dad ! Kam wants answers but his dad has given it to him already. Sometimes there isnt any answers. Nobody has any right to tell you what to do when it comes to your dad. And people who have their fathers in their life don’t always understand how insanely hard it is when you have an absent father. I agree with what Tricia said, don’t do anything for him or the viewers, just do it for you IF you want to. And it’s ok to not talk to him if he won’t change. My dad and I used to be really close and it’s now been 7 years since I’ve seen him. He still speaks to my sisters but I pissed him off when I was 17 and he has never let it go. Like dude, I’m 24 now. And I’ve made the effort as well but sometimes it’s just hopeless. He has never met my almost 4 year old. My husband doesn’t even know his dad at all and he was never in his life. You don’t owe your dad shit. I hope everything works out though because it’s really sad and hard to deal with but all you can do Kam is to be a WAY better father than yours ever was. I recently just started watching you guys through the good ol Rissa an quan, hearing you speak about your dad resonates with me so much and trust me when i say your already a good dad just by wanting to be a good dad. It’s hard when you have kids and had an absent parent because once you have your baby you’ll feel like how could someone ever not do whatever they possibly could for their child but knowing your a present parent will feel all that more rewarding, those thoughts will go away..you’ll be so busy wiping butts and catching spit up you won’t even think about it…obviously it’s going to always stick with you but as time goes on it gets easier and you start to heal with forgiveness that parenting is hard and sometimes people are to weak to do it! Kam- I have both mother and father and I’m only close to my dad. My mom never calls, and never texts she has always been very verbally/mentally abusive to me… I’ve extended that olive branch so many times and nothing can change. I say that to say do whatever feels right for you and your family and creating your barrier of peace. Your dad will majorly regret not getting to know your family and his grand baby. I was raised by my father. My mother was not in my life for a long time. I’ve done so much to have a relationship with my mom but she still is not in my life much and I’m in my 50s. I’ve learned that you can’t change people if they don’t want to change. The best thing I have found is sometimes after you do all you can, forgive him and keep moving. When he is ready to get with you he will. He has your number. I have been a grandma for a long time and she has no relationship with them either. My kids know her but it is what it is. You said it right there. You will break the cycle because you have acknowledged how you don't want to be. Your mother was not only your mother but your father and she did a great job in raising a man that would go the distance to understand why something that wasn't in his control happened. You will always hurt because of his absence but he taught you the biggest lesson by his absence that when your baby and future babies come into the world they will have a role model that they can aspire to be like and that is YOU! Some things will always be unknown and sometimes the truth will hurt more than knowing the answer. When you have your baby in your arms you will do everything in your power to protect them and you will not need to know anymore than what your mumma already told you. As much as you want to know those answers your father sounds like he is a broken man and he was most likely let down by his father as well.
