It's common to see triathletes over-rotate when they swim. This causes problems with the front end of their stroke, and with their kick.
Your hips should rotate 50% less than your shoulders to streamline your stroke and generate more power. In this video I show you how.

Thank you so much!! I could never get a straight answer about how much hip rotation compared to shoulder rotation. My hips at 45° means legs splayed and balance problems. You also lose the tension in the core that the shoulder hip differential rotation produces. The coiled spring effect so to speak. Thanks so much, it's been a mystery for me for years.

how does this square with the idea of ' hip driven freestyle'?

Vijay, Lets not confuse a strong core with stabilizing your spine, hips and maximizing the torque in your pull pattern. When athletes over roll their hips it’s very difficult to grab a firm handle on the entry. The elbow has a tendency to drop. One way to think of hip rotation is the degree of rotation is about 50 - 60% less than your shoulders. So, if the shoulder rotation is 45 degrees, cut this in half with your hips. Additionally, if the hips are rotated too far and the athlete is tight in the shoulder girdle and thoracic spine, the elbow will drop and the body will increase wagging with your feet. If only these tutorials would have been around 20 years ago it would have saved our triathlon club from years of swim misery after we attended a weekend clinic of a popular swim theory. Fortunately a Masters coach took us in and helped us unlearn all that garbage, but these videos would have cut that learning time down exponentially. Dave you are STILL The Man.

You can't generate force if there is nothing to push against, so your hips need to resist against the pull from the shoulders and arm. If they both rotate the same you get a floppy effect.

Johnny, you got it. Remember, over rotation combined with a thoracic spine and hip flexors will cause your feet to splay while breathing. Think about exposing your arm pit for a quick second and this is a good reminder on not over exaggerating the shoulder roll. Also turn your toes inward during the kick this will prevent eversion and dorsi flexion of your ankle. Dave

This goes against textbook swimming. We was taught to rotate the whole body around the longitudinal axis.....#duh back to the drawing board...lol
