At a distance of 10 km from Idukki Bus Stand, Kalvari Mount, also known as Calvary Mount is a mountain peak, and one of the important places of sightseeing in Idukki.Kalvari Mount is a stunning vantage point that offers an aerial view of the Idukki Reservoir and its surrounding peaks and forests. The viewpoint is situated near Thankamani Junction on Thodupuzha - Puliyanmala highway. It is one of the most scenic places that one must-visit during Idukki trip.
It is also an ideal place for mountain climbers and trekkers. The trekkers will be treated to a fascinating experience of low-hung clouds, cool breeze, occasional chirping birds, and hordes of sauntering elephants. However, the hillock has a very steep slope and is mostly scaled by professional trekkers. The trekkers and travelers can take a break at the nearby Tea Factory that offers the finest tea.As the road is rugged and the rocks are mostly slippery, it is advised to climb to the top only on foot. But if you are a professional driver and you have an SUV, you can choose to drive up. There is enough space to park your vehicles on top. There are two cottages at the foothills of the mountain that are managed by the forest department, where you can stay for the night.
One can trek towards the Calvary mount from the main road of Idduki and Kattapana and enjoy the panoramic view of the Idduki reservoir from the hill top. The verdant greenery and the cool refreshing air floating around the landscapes and surrounding touches the depth of your heart in no time. The blissful ambiance of the Calvary Mount is eye-catching. Visitors can even have the distant views of the herd of elephant way down the mountain and elephant swimming between the islets in the reservoir. Trekking towards the top of the mount will be a unique experience and also an opportunity to explore the bird’s eye view of the Idduki district.
The mild climate coupled with the beautiful view of the kuravan and kurathi hills and Idukki arch dam makes this spot an indispensable part of your trip to Idukki. The viewpoint here that has stolen the hearts of many wanderlusts is known as kalyanathandu view point. The sidelined area gained attention after the Idukki dam perched its way into the big columns of the newspapers. The rush of tourists conjured with the cozy climate and the scenery helped in molding it into a well-known tourist location.To enjoy an adventurous yet peaceful trek, climb up to the peak with an ignited spirit but hold yourself together as the way is steep and the fierce wind can blow you down. It is fascinating to watch how the isolated area turns into a crowded pilgrimage center during the lent season. The scene of the pious believers going up to the hill as a procession with songs and prayers is indeed delightful.The path to the viewpoint is ornamented with tea estates and other attractions like the base area of the dam and the hill view park. The dam looks like a baby sleeping hushed between two pillows. The area is a nature lover’s paradise and photographer’s most loved spot. You can take bikes and small cars but big cars would have to be parked one and a half kilometers downhill .The nearest city to Calvary Mount is Kattapana at a distance of 15 kilometers.
